Catholic sisters rally against Ryan budget

A group of Catholic sisters broke bread Tuesday with the poor and homeless at Milwaukee's St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church, part of a nine-state bus tour drawing attention to proposed Republican budget cuts and the Catholic charities they say would be harmed by them.

"The current House budget is going to devastate people at the margins," said Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Washington-based Network, the Catholic social justice lobby singled out in a recent Vatican rebuke of U.S. Catholic sisters.

"We believe we need reasonable revenues for responsible programs," she said.

The sisters are joining scores of faith leaders, includ ing the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, in criticizing the budget drafted by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) that would remake Medicare and Medicaid and slash domestic spending on programs that benefit the poor.

The "Nuns on the Bus" tour rolled into Wisconsin on Tuesday - a day after GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney appeared - stopping first at Ryan's Janesville office to drop off an alternative "faithful budget" proposal they say better reflects their Catholic values.

Ryan has defended the budget as in keeping with his Catholic faith.

The criticism of the Ryan budget is a rare show of solidarity of late between the Catholic hierarchy and the sisters, who have been rebuked by the Vatican in recent months for promoting positions contrary to church teachings on such issues as homosexuality and the ordination of women.

~snip~

While some Catholic bishops have called Ryan a good friend and conscientious Catholic - New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Madison's Bishop Robert Morlino among them - the Bishops Conference has criticized the budget as immoral and unjust - a refrain repeated by the sisters.

Aren’t sisters supposed to wear habits?

My apologies to any Catholics

This has always been my problem with the Catholic Church no singular voice on Church Policy , it conflicts with the teachings of Jesus to mandate taking from one group and giving to another.

Most orders dropped their requirement for habits in the 1960s, or modified them greatly.

Sister #1: "We've got to get the government to take the money away from the evil rich people, so they can then give it to you!"

Sister #2: "It's the only way!"

Giving people back their money so that they can donate to the charity of their wish is better than giving it to Caesar to waste and distribute with condoms and such.

Sisters, in the long run, you and the people you help will be better off not getting government handouts.

It is better that people donate directly to you instead of going through the bureaucratic middlemen.

And thankfully the ones that dropped their requirement are dying off and the more orthodox are taking their place. Good riddance to hippie, guitar playing, feel good social justice "sisters".

My apologies for wording of my previous ping. These are NOT Wisconsin nuns. I didn’t mean to say that, but upon re-reading my squib I realize that it could be read that way. These nuns are from Washington DC, and nowhere does the article identify their Order. Perhaps they represent several Orders. Who knows?

All I know is that I resent their criticism of Paul Ryan who is the only one who is trying to fix this mess.

I wonder where these cafeteria “sisters” were when Obama was forcing Catholic businesses to provide access to abortions...

LOL. My husband and I recently flew to San Francisco on family business. We had reserved aisle seats — aisle opposing. When we boarded the plane we found that 2 nuns (in habits) had taken our seats. Had they been dressed like Sr. Simone Campbell, we would have ousted them. As it was, I wasn’t going to tell them to move, and my husband had to suffer in a center seat for 4+ hours (his choice), while I got the window.

I'm glad that the incoming sisters are more orthodox, but I am not "thankful" that the older sisters are "dying off".

Okay so they are marching around the country opposing a budget that has not been passed, saying that it will create conditions of poverty that exist because of a budget that they favor?

I dont get it!?

Many in the Catholic hierarchy have gone pleading to the government with hands open wide, then when they get slapped on the hands by a government mandate, e.g. that they provide contraception, they mount lawsuits against the mandate.

Maybe these Sisters are just fine with the contraception mandate, who knows. But if they want the government’s tentacles reaching into their business, then they better be prepared to accept whatever demands the government places on them.

No, there is. It's called the Catechism and the Sister's are not following it. They are becoming an accessory to other's sins by counsel. Counseling to others it is ok to be envious and it is Ok to have the government steal from people with more.

"Catholic sisters", my foot. These are leftist change agents whose sole desire is to promote Socialism through their position in the Church.

Get a job, "sisters". Then, if you donote your OWN money to the needy, you will be engaging in charity instead of theft.

From newadvent.org

The Church insists on the use of a habit, by which the religious are distinguished from secular persons. A distinctive habit is always required for nuns; the clerical habit is sufficient for men. Those approved institutes whose members may be taken for seculars out of doors, lack that public profession which characterizes the religious state, in the sight of the Church, according to the Decree of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars, 11 August, 1889.
