Bid to kill EPA coal plant regulations thwarted in Senate
The Hill ^ | 6/20/12 | Ben Geman and Daniel Strauss

Posted on 06/20/2012 11:23:22 AM PDT by Nachum

Senate lawmakers on Wednesday blocked a GOP-led effort to scuttle Environmental Protection Agency regulations that mandate cuts in mercury pollution and other toxic emissions from coal-fired power plants.

The 46-53 vote against Sen. James Inhofe’s (R-Okla.) resolution staves off what would have been a stinging election-year rebuke of the White House green agenda.

Five Republicans joined 48 Democrats in blocking Inhofe’s measure to overturn regulations that coal industry groups and other critics contend will hurt the economy, cause power costs to spike and force numerous plants to shutter.

We can make a pretty good guess as to who the 5 RINOs were.

Why Romney isn’t using this to rhetorically bludgeon to death all coal state Dems is a mystery.

To be clear, without those republican votes, it would have been 51 to 48, to end the EPA’s tyrannical approach.

So ask yourself my friends. Is it important to have an (R) majority, or is it important to have a (C) majority?

We have got to get rid of the Democrats in our party.

Why the US parties do not have an exclusion mechanism is really beyond me. It’s making the whole system basically a one-party deal.

What is with the New England Republicans on this issue? Manmade global warming? Or just general pandering to the leftist base?

Lamar Alexander I can write off as a grandstander.

Mercury pollution must be protected at all costs, as a building block of the Republic. We drove the British into the sea for the right to dump mercury wherever we please.

Thanks for the mention. I’m sure it would be instructive, but I am not suffering from any delusions concerning Romney.

The top spot will remain blank on my ballot this year. It did in 2008 also.

Give me a guy whose values I can support, and I’ll be glad to vote for them.

... — leveling the playing field for power plants that already have such controls in place,” the White House said.

Why is that even a consideration?

I'm very disappointed with Kelly Ayotte, the NH (R), supposedly.
Sure mercury is bad for the fish but the cost of the program should matter also.

Obama’s Agenda 21 play is not exactly what you seem to think that it is.

Obama is playing both sides against the middle on the coal issue. We, the people are the middle. Obama only opposes East Coast Coal, most of which is on private land. Obama supports West Coast, sub-bituminous coal, which is mostly on federal land, and leased to crony partners of the Obama administration.

Obama doesn’t oppose burning sub-bituminous coal in new, expensive, “cleaner burning” coal fired power plants, but he would prefer to export the sub-bituminous coal to developing nations, who will use it to create manufacturing jobs in their own countries.

The Agenda 21 part is the exporting of our natural resources to “developing nations”, essentially reversing the historic economic pattern, and weaking the US. Without government subsidies the sub-bituminous coal could not even be given away. Like green energy, all the profit in sub-bituminous coal is in the government subsidies and deals with RR and shippers.

Agreed, but it ain't gonna happen, as long as the party keeps elevating Democrats like Romney to the top.

I’m hoping that another FReeper will list those 5 names! Wouldn’t that mean that there was some Dems that came to support the bill?

Oh well, your energy prices will necessarily skyrocket!

“Mercury pollution must be protected at all costs, as a building block of the Republic. We drove the British into the sea for the right to dump mercury wherever we please.

So, we should shut down our capability to produce energy and force all Americans to buy mercury laden light bulbs to keep in their homes.

Yep, demagogue’ing is fun!

As long as your energy costs necessarily skyrocket, then all is good.
