On Face the Nation on Sunday, Mitt Romney said that if elected president he wouldn't have to get congressional permission for a military strike on Iran.
To quote him directly (emphasis added):
I can assure you if I'm president, the Iranians will have no question but that I will be willing to take military action if necessary to prevent them from becoming a nuclear threat to the world. I don't believe at this stage, therefore, if I'm president that we need to have a war powers approval or special authorization for military force. The president has that capacity now. I understand that some in the Senate for instance have written letters to the president indicating you should know that a containment strategy is unacceptable. We cannot survive a course of action which would include a nuclear Iran we must be willing to take any and all actions.
All those actions must be on the table.

Yeah Willard
send those 5 boys of yours at the front of the line...
Nope.
It was wrong when Obama did it in Libya, and it’ll be just as wrong if Romney does it in Iran.
He better thank God that his opponent is the most pathetic democrat evah.
Some times ya just need to keep ur mouth shut.
Apples and oranges, my friend.
Libya was an internal matter and we should have stayed out. Iran wants to wipe another country off the map. That, cannot be allowed.
Fact is, he could, legally. Problem is, political correctness has eaten up the national will to go on. Even our military forces are full of it (DADT, feminism, etc.).
He could, but I strongly suggest that he NOT. Saying so was stupid.
Having said that; if we start up another war in the Middle East, we may very well run out of soldiers and armament.
I say let those people over there argue over whose god is the real god and which zombies and prophets are right about the universe until they wipe each other out.
I personally would not care if the entire Middle East was reduced to a sea of glass with no inhabitants.
Oh great. Now we have our own candidate to be king.
Now some folks can run him on the ‘My king is better than your king” platform.
Armour and chain mail will be handed out at the jousting tournaments this fall.
Maybe we could cooperate with the other side to make sure their two armors are oppositely charged. The first time they make a pass, they’ll merge into one big glob of king juice and we can start over.
There is still this little thing called the Constitution.
If Iran is threatening to make good on its plans to destroy Israel or another ally in the region, the case for military action exists. Not on the line of Iraq or Afghanistan, but if all else fails, military action is the only remaining option. But NOTHING without Congressional consent.
Anyone remember the “Star Trek curse” where the odd-numbered Trek movies were almost certain to be flops? You just knew they were going to blow it...
Why does that come to mind?
Sorry, but I don't buy that we have to go involving ourselves in every hot spot the world over.
Somebody please tell Romney that we don't even have enough money left to operate that pirate ship in the Pirate's of the Caribbean ride at Disney, much less launch yet another war in the Middle East.
That’s not the same thing as what the headline implied. But it is from the 0bamatrons at the Atlantic.
whether his position is defendable or not is a secondary issue. My question is why he felt compelled to take such an unnecessary stand. He could have just said he would take effective action etc and when asked what he meant state that he would not get into specifics of what he might or might do etc etc.
Unnecessary tactical mistake by our risk-adverse RINO IMO ... unless he is a few steps ahead of me and purposefully wants to suck Obama into this debate for some other reason
“Libya was an internal matter and we should have stayed out”
Why should we have stayed out? Operation Odyssey Dawn was a huge success. No American casualties. A brutal dictator was overthrown. Muammar Gaddafi ordered the attack on Pan Am Flight 103. 189 Americans killed by him on that flight.
Milt Romney IS Obama.
Same Tyrant.
Same Egotism.
Same Backstabbing.
Same antiConstitutionalism.
Same Ineptness.
Same RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE.
Same TARP
Same Ineligibility.
Same Soros.
Same Global Warming.
Same HATRED OF CONSERVATIVES.
NO TO ROMNEY.
NO TO RINOs
Keep in mind, folks, this is very likely for Iran’s consumption. It’s to draw a distinction between himself and the simpering, appeasing little POS in the WH now.
+1000
The US has fought hundreds of wars, exactly how many depends on what you classify as a war.
We have formally declared war exactly 5 times, and not since 1941.
There are other ways of dealing with Iran that Obama has been wasting in all the wrong places.
In Iran we should arm the opposition but only if we’re willing to accept the long term consequences. However, arming the Irani opposition is a lot smarter than arming the radicals in Libya.
Where is dicator wannabe going to get the money for his war, I wonder. Dumb as a box of rocks.
LOL... yeah, that’s it!
The Romney statement is one more example of egotistical proclivity for presidential FIAT, where the people’s representatives are circumvented entirely and their support assumed in order to justify a strike on another nation with our husbands, sons and relatives used at the tip of the spear.
Yes, there are events that may deserve a strike, but if it is so deserving and obvious and justified, then Congress needs its own voice to offer or reject their support.
Romney and Obama have entirely too much already in common and records to prove it. This is one more insight into the psychology of privilege, for unfettered power.
The gaggle who will vote for these two deserve them both and will be reaping exactly what they sew.
God, be with us. We are finished and in danger.
All we need to do with Iran is step out of Israel’s way. In fact, if we want to help we can refuel their jets and let them use our carriers.
Correct. The only thing helping Romney is that Obama is his opponent.
Or you need to run it wide open. Nixon said he had a “secret plan” to end the Vietnam War. At the same time his campaign was leaking to foreign diplomats that Nixon was a “mad man” on the issue of North Vietnam and may be planning a nuclear strike.
After Reagan was elected but before he was inaugurated his staff told several nationally syndicated columnists that the American hostages in Iran might have to be sacrificed in the retaliation he had planned against Iran. The plan was to attack Iran's industrial sector and oil depots with ballistic missiles from offshore.
And he would be correct....
Its a stupid scary world and getting worse every second of every day.
...But it would take less than 48 hours, and our troops should be well outta there within the 60 day time limit of the war Powers Act.
...but yeah. Best to just keep mum about it.
I do appreciate your point. It’s a good one to make.
Romney was into excessive governance in MA and to hear an excessive statement gives no ease to the people, given this excessive fiat business going on by the current president has just about run out of field with the people.
I know I’ve had it with excessive governance, and ‘am actually not going to comply and cooperate any longer.
if Iran has the bomb and can put it on American soil, all of our boys will be on the front line and the line will be in the USA.
That has been a goal of Iran, IQ, Taliban and the Muslim Brotherhood for many, many years.
The House of Representatives has been funding nefarious ways and means of this administration and their thugs and czars way past their expiration date, haven’t they.
“China, please pass the greens. I’ll have more please.”
I don’t agree
He was drawing a clear line between he and his opponent.
Hello! It’s has already been done. What do you think StuxNet is?
And the Muslim Brotherhood increases its influence in the middle east. I guess you must be waiting for the 12th Imam
Not of the full Congress... he did meet first with Congressional leaders from both parties, though.
Mittens has a tin ear. If he gets in and tries to act like Obama, we will probably be able to impeach him for violating the constitution.
well maybe he was and that part is fine since Obama hasn’t done squat on Iran except maybe encourage them.
What is not fine is going to war with Iran or any country without congressional approval. Emergency action where time is of the essence is one thing but this deal with Iran has been going on for many, many years. There is absolutely no excuse for not getting a declaration of war in this case if that is what is desired.
Israel should lead the way, that is for sure.
As fox hole sand bags?
brilliant....but we don't send anyone anywhere...they all volunteer....get over it, Romney will be the next president and will win re-election
Is there some reason why the other country can’t defend itself? I support protecting our allies, but we don’t have to fight their wars for them.
Romney should get approval from Congress first. It is in the constitution.
