Supreme Court rules against SEIU in dispute over union fee hike [Sotomayor votes w/majority!]

The Supreme Court says a union must give nonmembers an immediate chance to object to unexpected fee increases that all workers are required to pay in closed-shop situations.

The court on Thursday ruled for Dianne Knox and other nonmembers of the Service Employees International Union's Local 1000, who wanted to object and opt out of a $12 million special assessment the union required from its California public sector members. Knox and others said the union did not give them a legally required notice that the increase was coming.

Dumb question....but how could a Union possibly up the fees for “non-members”? Clearly I have under estimated their reach.

In a closed shop, you can opt out of joining the union, but must pay union dues for that portion that represents collective bargaining and representation. You cannot be charged dues for polical activity expenses and some organizing expenses.

The Beck decision supposedly remedied that ,but the Soros elected state AGs and feds are loathe to support that SCOTUS ruling.

If I recall correctly, "Beck Rights" gives the employee the right to opt out of having a portion of their dues used for Union-designated political actions. "Paycheck Protection" gives the employee the right to opt in. Under Beck, you put a big target on your back if you exercise your option, putting you at risk of thuggery. You are in an easily identified minority, as the default condition is to support all the Union political positions.

“Is it possible that Sotomayor actually has some integrity?”

Throwaway vote. If it was 4-4 this would have went in favor of the SEIU.

“It’s pronounced Seuter-mayor.”

No it is not. It is Sotomayor...as it is spelled. Period.

It is a Spanish name and there is no invention about its pronunciation.

If you tell that to any Spanish speaking person, you will be laughed at as I am laughing now.

“Help me to understand something . . .

I’ve never worked a job in a union shop, or where there was even a hint of a union, so I’m not as up on this stuff as I would like to be. Are there actually instances where an employee is forced against his or her will to join a union in order to perform a certain job?

WELCOME TO MOST OF NJ MY FRIEND!!!..YOU cannot work unless you join a union...Those of us in non-union shops get unionized threats every year..but we just tell them to go away!!
