I think that the moment Elian was back in Cuba the brainwashing began--he's probably convinced now that Castro is wonderful and his American relatives were horrible.

The one thing that the Clinton administration avoided, once Castro let it be known he wanted Elian returned, was to give Elian's father the option of joining Elian in the U.S. Elian's father was never free when he was in the U.S.--he was always accompanied by some of Castro's guards.

There was a Catholic nun who was initially in favor of Elian being sent back to Cuba, until she met Elian's grandmother and saw the fear in her eyes.
