I can understand her denial.

Mrs. S didn't want to lose her status in the community. That was what was most important to her, more than innocent young lives being ruined.

Too bad “Joe Pa” never was indited. The more info that comes out, the more obvious it is that Paterno knew about Sandusky’s sicko interests, covered for him and kept quiet.

PSU gets the hit now. It may well bankrupt the university.

PSU football tickets are going to cost as much as a plate at an Obama fund raiser to settle the coming civil suits.

And how does a successful assistant coach go from being interviewed for head coaching jobs to dropping out of coaching altogether? Unless the rumor mill in college coaching ranks had him pegged as a pervert and nobody would touch him.

Except JoePa who gave him an office in the athletic department and keys to the building. But did not want him on the coaching staff.

I read they took him away in handcuffs having revoked his bail. I was worried about the damage he might yet do also. He’ll never see the outside again except through windows as he is taken for sentencing.

I wish they would have monitored him but allowed even a couple of days to get his affairs in order. The pervert is old enough to remember movies that ended with the villain saying he would "do the honorable thing" and closing the door on his study, followed by the sound of a gunshot. It would be nice to give Sandusky that opportunity instead of immediately turning him over to the prisoners for justice.

What information?

Nothing new came out at trial. The small amount of information actually relevant to Paterno that’s been released in the last six months only shows that he was made a very convenient fall guy for Corbett and the Board of Trustees.

Maryjean,

Okay, does your Bible contain John 20:19-23? That’s confession. If you’re not participating in it, then you’re not having a “unique opportunity” to seek and obtain forgiveness for your sins.

Pederasty seems to be more common in documented history than adult homosexuals in a binary relationship. He is very much a homosexual.

I’m not saying he’s “technically” not. You are missing my point. Banning known homosexuals from leadership positions would not have kept someone like a Jerry Sandusky out of his position as he was not known to be a homosexual, was not openly homosexual, never apparently interested in homosexual relations with adult males, or as it would seem, even with adult women.

Many people, even some of his neighbors and friends of many years (and I’m not talking about the people who witnessed abuse or the people who it was reported to, or his wife, who I find it hard to believe she didn’t know), never suspected he was raping young boys. They thought he was a very nice man, a married man, a straight man, some even claimed a good Christian man, who loved children, especially underprivileged children and truly wanted to help them. While that now seems deluded and in hindsight there were many signs that something wasn’t right, it probably wasn’t so obvious until the victims started comming forward. Remember that the defense brought in “character” witnesses, even some former Second Mile kids who testified they’d never witnessed anything inappropriate or had ever been abused and that Sandusky was a great guy.

And it wasn’t as if Sandusky was known to frequent gay clubs, gay prostitutes, or gay pride parades. This creep got away with what he did to those kids for years, in large part because on the surface, he appeared to many, to be perfectly “normal”.

By definition pedophilia is a sexual attraction to prepubescent children. Homosexuality by definition is a same sex sexual attraction. Some male pedophiles prey on prepubescent boys, some male pedophiles prey on prepubescent girls, some prey on both, some female pedophiles prey on prepubescent girls, some female pedophiles prey on prepubescent boys, some prey on both. Some pedophiles have seemingly “normal” relations with adults of the opposite sex or homosexual relations with adults of the same sex, and some pedophiles have never had relations with any adult and are exclusively sexually attracted to children. And contrary to what some people assume, not all homosexuals are sexually attracted to prepubescent children. In fact some, like the gay people I personally know, find it monstrous and disgusting and think someone like Jerry Sandusky should be strung up with a short length of rope.

While I’m not making an endorsement of homosexuality, assuming and exclusively blaming openly homosexuals for all acts of pedophilia and child molestation, actually makes it easier for someone like a Jerry Sandusky to get away with their heinous crimes. The most dangerous pedophile is the one who doesn’t seem like one.

Recently there was the dad in Texas who beat and killed a man (and righteously so) for attempting to sexually molest his 5 year old daughter. We could correctly say that the dead man wasn’t homosexual because he attempted to assault a girl but he was still a pedophile and he needed kill’n.

The best way to protect children from pedophiles is to keep a close eye on them, not leave them completely alone with just any adult who is not 100% reliable and trusted. Never assume that an adult, even a family member or friend, just because they seem to be “nice” is not capable of molesting them. Most importantly teach your children, from as young as an age as appropriate, about “bad” touching in a way that doesn’t make them paranoid and why it’s OK to scream and say NO! and how to defend themselves if some adult, while alone with them touches them in their “special places” or tries to get them to do something that makes them uncomfortable or “icky” and they should tell you about it.

Also foster a good open relationship with your child that allows them to feel safe about talking to you about anything and everything and let them know that if something “bad” does happen to them, it’s not their fault and they can feel perfectly safe in letting you know about it. Let them know that if some adult threatens that “nobody is going to believe you” that this is not true and if they are threatened that “if you tell, I will kill your family” that this person is lying and let them know you can and will protect yourself and them.

Sadly the Second Mile kids didn’t come from stable loving homes and that’s what made them easy prey. And when at least one of the biological moms reported her suspicions to the authorities, nobody believed her.

The only problem is, there’s not one mention in any of the coverage about changing the culture that allowed this to go on for so long: A football program that no one dared say anything that might be injurious to “the program”.

I’m not blaming Paterno, I’m blaming the entire football culture in State College, Pennsylvania. When the university has become little more than life support for a football team and the amount of money it brings in and is therefore untouchable and sacrosanct, something is wrong.

Look at the Notre Dame football program—a kid running a video camera on a practice in high winds was KILLED and all they did was pay a fine, and not even a large one.

Four people fell on their swords, two are being prosecuted, one is spending the rest of his life in jail and one died soon after being fired—but the football culture at Penn State won’t change. No one will want to disrupt what is an ATM for the rest of the institution. No one will want to irritate alumni with open checkbooks any more than they already have.

What does it tell you when a football coach makes more than the president of the university?

Despite what generations of slack-jawed Bobby Knight apologists keep saying as their sole justification for his antics, “budd-eeee wee-yuns BAWWWLLLL games” is not anywhere close to a sufficient reason to allow these untouchable juggernauts to exist under the guise of “extracurricular” departments at a college.

The Penn State press release on the conviction is eerily silent on any mention of a change in the football culture that allowed this to go on as long as it did.

That’s one question they won’t answer.

Vlad — in that passage of Scripture, Jesus is speaking to His **disciples**, not only to Peter or His other Apostles.

I am a disciple of Jesus, and therefore (according to the passage you’ve referenced) have been given the authority to offer forgiveness in Jesus’ name.

For what it’s worth, I appreciate the clarity that this discussion has provided — Roman Catholics believe that salvation is not found in Christ alone, but in their particular denomination. And those who aren’t members of their denomination are not able to experience the fullness of Christ. Indeed, they may not even be forgiven and saved if they only trust in Jesus, and are not members of the wayward Roman Catholic Church. I appreciate how such heresy has been so clearly stated by certain Roman Catholic FReepers in this discussion. May this discussion lead people away from Rome and instead toward unadulterated faith in Jesus, our Savior.

When do the trials begin for State and University officials who ruined the lives of young boys so in order to not upset a great football program? I guess that kind of justice no longer happens in America.

The lady is mentally sick. She just could not accept what her own ears and eyes were telling her. Even at the trial, in the face of testinoy from kids who were abused in the bathroom while she was not far away in the home and had to hear what was heppening, she denied it all and would not for a moment admit or believe her "Jerry," could do this.

But he did, and she allowed it to go on.

This predator even set up that fund and association to help under-priveleged kids, attracting them to himself.

He should be executed and I do not expect him to last long, even if he is totally isolated. I believe ultimately it will come home to him, all the lies, all the horror he caused, and he may well take his own life.

Like with Paterno, I do not expect the wife to last long at her age either. Just too much to bear.

Paterno's entire winning career is not completely tainted because this went on a long part of that career and he turned his head and eyes away from iot...as did the administration at Penn State. Their program, I am sorry, because of the people who have administered it, deserves the death penalty until the admin and coaching staff is completely replaced and starts entirely new. Three to five years.

Sad day for Penn State, sad day for College Football...but absolutly none of that compares to the horror and tragedy, pain and suffering that has been infliced on so many young men by this monster.

As I say, he should be swifly executed for these heinous crimes.

...and the assistant coach who actually saw it? I'm sorry, I have no sympathy at all or understanding. I do not care how terrible and shocking what he saw was. When you see a young child being abused in that fashion you act immediately to help the child. Not go home and "think about it," call your Dad and the coach. You act then and immediately call the police. He could have stopped it right there...and as it was I am sure his testimony was key...but I have no respect for such behavior at all.

It would be nice to give Sandusky that opportunity instead of immediately turning him over to the prisoners for justice.

I disagree. Giving him the “easy way out”, i.e. allowing him the opportunity to kill himself is wrong. He does not deserve the option to do the “honorable” thing now, the time for that is long past. If he had any sense of “honor” he would have offed himself before going to trial or pleaded guilty and begged for mercy and forgiveness. Instead he proclaimed his “innocence” right up till the end and allowed his attorneys’ to besmirch his victims, claiming they were liars and in it for profit, while all the time sitting there and smiling smugly at his victims. I actually think he got some sort of perverse pleasure out of hearing their testimony and reliving his “exploits”.

Sandusky needs to live out the last years of his miserable life knowing and reminded on a daily basis that justice was finally served, and that all those kids who he told “nobody will ever believe you” that a jury of 12 good people finally believed them. He needs to wake up every morning in a small jail cell and living in fear that every time he goes to the showers, he’s likely to be assaulted in the same heinous manner that he assaulted those kids. I hope he lives to at least 100 and is miserable and living in fear every day for the rest of his life. BTW – I’m not wishing for him to be raped in prison, I just want him to live in constant fear that that might happen. Karma – it’s a Bitch!

They need to go after ALL of them.....The Little Children and Jesus10:13-16pp — Mt 19:13-15; Lk 18:15-17

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.

14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

15 I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

16 And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.

You wrote:

Even if that were the case, it would in no way negate what I have said.

“I am a disciple of Jesus, and therefore (according to the passage you’ve referenced) have been given the authority to offer forgiveness in Jesus’ name.”

No. You are not a commissioned disciple. You have no such power.

“For what it’s worth, I appreciate the clarity that this discussion has provided — Roman Catholics believe that salvation is not found in Christ alone, but in their particular denomination.”

No one here said that. Also, you cannot divide the Church from Christ - which is what you are doing even if you don’t realize it. The Church is Christ’s body. Those who want to belong fully to Chist want to belong to His Church and not some latter day sect set up sometime after 1500.

“And those who aren’t members of their denomination are not able to experience the fullness of Christ.”

I’ve never been in a denomination. I’m in the Church. Only Protestants really have denominations. And no, someone outside the Church cannot experience the fullness of Christ as He ordained it to be in earthly life - after all the Church is His body. Again, you are dividing Christ from His Church in your thinking.

“Indeed, they may not even be forgiven and saved if they only trust in Jesus, and are not members of the wayward Roman Catholic Church.”

Again we see in your comments a distorted view of reality. That is to be expected from sectarians who mentally divide Christ from His body.

“I appreciate how such heresy has been so clearly stated by certain Roman Catholic FReepers in this discussion.”

I appreciate how easy it is for Protestant sectarians to apparently invent things out of thin air, deny scripture, twist scripture, and be just plain wrong. When someone is in a man-made sect then that is to be expected.

“May this discussion lead people away from Rome and instead toward unadulterated faith in Jesus, our Savior.”

Unadulterated faith in Christ would naturally entail love of His Church and avoidance of man-made sects. Some people welcome the grace to have that unadulterated faith and be members of His body. Others remain Protestant and just post on FreeRepublic.

The RCC needed priests real bad as the profession has certain anachronistic liabilities not conducive to recruitment so like the US Army during WWII when they needed soldiers fast and lots of them they only “counted” eyes instead of “checking” them during induction physicals.

The RCC needed even pederast priests to keep the corporation profitable and it was only when their “wack a mole” shuffling of the bad ones to avoid scandals fell apart like a Ponzi scheme that they finally cleaned up their act—I guess.

It is Roman Paganism that is the man-made sect and kidnapped the early Church. It is the RCC that enticed pagans into their religion by telling them that they didn’t have to give up their multiple gods; the RCC invented “saints” that were pagan gods with different names. And the pagans didn’t have to give up their goddess worship; they could now worship Mary otherwise known as Asteria. It was the RCC that invented another pagan concept known as purgatory. It was the RCC that murdered people that wanted to read the Bible in their own language instead of the vulgate Latin. And when scholars translated the original Hebrew and Greek and discovered the many, many errors of the RCC bible, then they were murdered. And that is but a fraction of the history of blasphemy, heresy and apostasy of the RCC.

If I knew he was molesting or raping our kids, I would take a gun and blow his head off while he was sleeping.

If a man molests his own kid, he will rape any child.

Forever. A mother should protect her kids against any other person in the world. No amount of money or peace is worth the life or happiness or safety of a child.

It was the RCC that created a truly efficacious “madrases” system of religious indoctrination that makes it's “graduates” not only spiritually terrified of middle management priests but of ultimate damnation from politically appointed pontiffs—the “confessional” being the “water-boarding” that allows dissenting mindsets to be “corrected.”

One could say the RCC was the first truly fascist regime of monotheistic Western Civilization—albeit a benign one at times.

just heard on TV 3 months till sentencing. County jail for now.

Can anybody who understands the PA judicial system explain to me why it will take three months to sentence somebody who was just convicted of multiple counts of raping children? Three months? Why?

A few years back, I was on a jury in a murder trial. After we convicted him, the judge already had him sentenced to life without parole by the time we got our personal effects out of the jury room. As I was heading for the parking lot, the convicted murderer was already on his way to state prison to spend the rest of his life.

It just bothers me that this process is going to drag out another three months while Sandusky enjoys the summer in County jail (where he will get much better treatment than he would in a state prison - where he belongs today).

Sometimes the mother is the abuser and molester.

Another jury has found an official of the Catholic church (not a Bishop) guilty of sending pedophile priests from parishes where their activities got them into trouble off to unsuspecting parishes that were not aware of these transgressions. He could get up to 7 years. Other reports say this is only the tip of the iceberg, and a number of similar prosecutions should take place.

It is not a suggestion. The Catholic Faith is the True Faith.

“Gawd, how many have perished over the centuries from THAT bloody vanity!”

No one dies because of a vanity, and truth is never a vanity.

“Get your kids OUT of public schools.”

Of course there is absolutely NO danger that children in Charter Schools, or home schooled will NEVER encounter such problems. What if Sanduski’s kids had been home schooled? Home schooling is an excellent way to keep children away from outsiders to whom they might report abuse. I was speaking with a man yesterday whose girls, early teens, were in a private charter school. He said the teacher told the class girls could make more money as strippers than as college graduates. The angry father said to me, “What kind of message does that give to young girls, or to young boys for that matter.” The teacher left that school and is now working in a private religious connected academy.

Maybe she couldn’t stand having sex with this guy. Maybe he threatened to kill her if she left him. Who knows? He had a lot of power and influential friends. She could have had her own private hell to deal with. On the other hand, maybe she didn’t care. Hopefully, once he is away the truth will emerge.

“It is Roman Paganism that is the man-made sect and kidnapped the early Church.”

Roman paganism was extinguished by the Catholic Church 1400 years ago.

“It is the RCC that enticed pagans into their religion by telling them that they didn’t have to give up their multiple gods;”

False. There are numerous examples of Catholic missionaries destroying idols (Sts. Boniface, Ansgar, etc). What enticed pagans to join the Catholic Church was its teachings about Christ, heaven and its acts of charity.

“the RCC invented “saints” that were pagan gods with different names.”

No. Secularists and other morons make that claim but have never once actually demonstrated it. Take, for instance, how the same secularists say that the Mithraic Mysteries are the actual source of the Christian ideas about baptism and a savior. They’re wrong, of course. And so are you.

“And the pagans didn’t have to give up their goddess worship; they could now worship Mary otherwise known as Asteria.”

Again, no. First, they were not worshipping Mary. If you worshipped Mary you were a Collyridian and you were excommunicated.

“It was the RCC that invented another pagan concept known as purgatory.”

False. First, it is no invention. Second, clearly Jews believed in such a concept as 2 Maccabees 12 shows. Third, since in Catholic theology, the God who created purgatory is the Trinity, the God who cleanses souls there is the Trinity, and the God who won that grace to cleanse souls with in purgatory is Jesus, there is no rational reason to call purgatory anything but Christian.

“It was the RCC that murdered people that wanted to read the Bible in their own language instead of the vulgate Latin.”

Nope. Nevere happened. Not even once. I have a PhD in Medieval History and have researched this in at least six languages and there is no proof whatsoever that any such thing ever happened even once. The simple fact is translating the Bible into the vernacular was never viewed as a criminal act by the Catholic Church. Those two or three regions which had laws restricting translations never banned them outright and never executed anyone for translating or possessing a vernacular Bible.

“And when scholars translated the original Hebrew and Greek and discovered the many, many errors of the RCC bible, then they were murdered.”

Again, no. NEVER happened. Go ahead and list the two or three examples which don’t actually prove your claim. I don’t mind refuting them yet again here on FR. I’ve done it dozens of times before.

“And that is but a fraction of the history of blasphemy, heresy and apostasy of the RCC.”

You’re posting fantasies, not facts. And of course you post no actual examples of sources.

A very good statement of the problem. Pedophilia is about an inability to have honest strong relations with other adults. Anyone who thinks that getting kids out of public schools and into private schools or home schooling will solve the problem does NOT understand the problem. The more isolated children, and for that matter adults, are, the more likely they are to be abused in one form or another. Be suspicious of any adults who do not want their children or spouses to have outside friendships.

Could there be any connection between the prideful superiority of the Catholic church and its Pope and the serious problem with pedophile priests? Sandusky had the same kind of superior pridefulness and inability to even realize that he was wrong. Any institution which has an overwhelmingly inflated opinion of its own perfection stands in danger of serious mistakes, even a great University. The Greeks call it HUBRIS.
