THE FIRST STEP IN RESOLVING INTERPERSONAL CONFLICTS

CW Moore, in his book, The Mediation Process: Practical Strategies for Resolving Conflict defines conflict as "struggles between two or more people over values, or competition for status, power, or scarce resources." Experts in conflict management believe that conflict is inevitable in any organization or relationship. Many strategies have been developed to mediate and resolve organizational and interpersonal conflicts. What is usually missing in these mediation processes is a biblical understanding of the nature and causes of conflict. James 4:1-2 indicates that the causes of fights and quarrels among us come from our desires to win, to have our way, to get what we want, to control the outcome. Therefore, according to God's direction, the first step in resolving interpersonal conflicts requires a self-examination of our motives, desires, wants, positions, and interests. The Bible teaches us to look within, and discover our own faults, before trying to correct the faults of others. Matthew 7:3-5 illustrates this point, "And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Although conflict is unavoidable, it is not always negative. In fact there are some very positive outcomes that can be derived through conflict. The Chinese form the symbol for "conflict" by combining two terms: danger and opportunity. Conflict can be a destructive experience, or the opportunity to clarify confusion, roles and expectations. Conflict always provides an opportunity to glorify God, to serve God, and to grow in grace. Conflict gives us a chance to show God that we love, respect, honor, and trust Him. It also allows us to demonstrate to others God's principles of love, forgiveness, and humility. Philippians 2:3-4 advocates a spirit of collaboration in dealing with conflicts in interpersonal relationships. That is, to place the thoughts, ideas, and feelings of others on par with our own. As Stephen Covey suggests, "Seek first to understand and then to be understood."

Conflict mediation techniques and strategies are very useful and necessary. However, God would have us include some more significant ingredients to the resolution processes, the two "Great Commandments:" "To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength ... and to love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:29-31). Trust these two great commandments and they will take you where you need to go, imbue the right spirit within you, and direct you in the things you do.

CAPT Leroy Gilbert, CHC, USN

Any Distance, Any Time

June 24, 2012

For several years, I’ve corresponded with a pastor in Nepal who often travels with his church members to distant communities in the Himalayas to preach and plant churches. Recently he sent me his itinerary for the following week and asked me to pray.

His busy schedule revealed that over the course of a week he planned to travel by motorcycle about 160 kilometers (100 miles) to several cities to preach and hand out gospel tracts.

I wondered at the great distances my friend would cover over mountainous terrain, and I wrote to ask how he was holding up. He replied, “We had a wonderful time of marching in the mountains with our church members. All do not have motorcycles . . . so we all walked. It was a blessed time. Still more places to go.” And then I was reminded of how “Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom” (Matt. 9:35).

I thought of my reluctance to drive across town in the snow to visit a lonely widower; to walk across the street to help a neighbor; to answer a knock on the door from a needy friend when I’m busy; to go any time, any place, any distance for the sake of love. And I thought of our Lord, for whom no distance was too great.

Christ traveled to the earth below
And left behind His throne above;
No distance was too great for Him
Because He was compelled by love. —Sper
What God gave to us, He wants us to share.

Read: Matthew 9:35-38

Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching [and] preaching the gospel. —Matthew 9:35

I read an article 10 years or so ago that disputes much of this.

The article stated that under normal conditions, conflict resolution works most of the time but when it come to beliefs (religious or political) there exists a large number of whom will argue despite facts presented and proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

There are certain people who when presented with absolute irrefutable proof will doggedly cling to their false beliefs.

The worst group were the politically motivated dogmatic's that feel that being nice, fair and treating everyone equally despite evidence that some people in no way deserved such respect.

These people ignored all evidence that some people were not worthy or even capable of treating others in kind. They operate on BLIND faith that all of mankind should think like they did and if they did not they should be shunned, despised, and even killed.

These people were what we call Liberals, Progressives, Communists, and Fascist.

Rush put it into perspective with much few words. He said "When we argue with Liberals, we just think of them as being wrong where as they think of us as being EVIL.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

Good evening, Kathy!

*HUGS*

A Blessed Lord's Day to you and yours!

Thanks very much for tonight's Sunday Chapel thread. It fastens on one of the great dangers in our society - excluding God and the Bible from public discourse. This civic atheism will not serve to resolve interpersonal conflicts. It will not serve the interests of our Nation. It will not serve to save the immortal souls of our people.

It is crucial to our survival as a Nation that we return to the traditional Judeo-Christian principles that enabled us to make this Nation and its people strong. The direction this Nation is now following leads inevitably to Perdition.

End of ConorMacNessa'a Sermon for this Sunday.

Did not work today, Kathy - after staying up last night until after two, I ended up staying in bed the entire morning. I woke up with heavy nasal congestion and general weakness.

After medicating myself and eating breakfast, I took my son to stay over with a friend who lives about 30 miles away. After that took John Man to work and by the time I got back it was time to cook dinner. Mrs. MacNessa worked like a Trojan all day so I cooked dinner) Had a couple of nice stuffed salmon fillets. Then back to pick John Man from work and arrived home shortly before nine.

I was feeling somewhat better during the afternoon but have declined this evening. I actually did a fair amount of walking last night. We had to leave the bleachers at one point and get under cover due to a passing thunderstorm. Luckily, it was only a short delay.

The Silent Drill Platoon, Marine Band, Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Battalion of Marine Barracks Washington all performed with consummate professionalism. Much to my delight, the Drum and Bugle Corps played "Scotland the Brave" followed by "The Minstrel Boy." I was most gratified.

1928 Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church

The Lord's Prayer

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

For the Army.

O LORD God of Hosts, stretch forth, we pray thee, thine almighty arm to strengthen and protect the soldiers of our country. Support them in the day of battle, and in the time of peace keep them safe from all evil; endue them with courage and loyalty; and grant that in all things they may serve without reproach; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Navy.

ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea; Vouchsafe to take into thy almighty and most gracious protection our country's Navy, and all who serve therein. Preserve them from the dangers of the sea, and from the violence of the enemy; that they may be a safeguard unto the United States of America, and a security for such as pass on the seas upon their lawful occasions; that the inhabitants of our land may in peace and quietness serve thee our God, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In Time of War and Tumults.

O ALMIGHTY God, the supreme Governor of all things, whose power no creature is able to resist, to whom it belongeth justly to punish sinners, and to be merciful to those who truly repent; Save and deliver us, we humbly beseech thee, from the hands of our enemies; that we, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore from all perils, to glorify thee, who art the only giver of all victory; through the merits of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer

Prayers from
A Prayer Book for Soldiers and Sailors

(1941)

FOR GOD‘S PROTECTION

O Almighty and most merciful God, of thy bountiful goodness keep us, we beseech thee, from all things that may hurt us; that we, being ready both in body and soul, may cheerfully accomplish those things which thou commandest; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We beseech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defence against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR ALL IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR THE ARMY

O Lord God of Hosts, stretch forth, we pray thee, thine almighty arm to strengthen and protect the soldiers of our country. Support them in the day of battle, and in the time of peace keep them safe from all evil; endue them with courage and loyalty; and grant that in all things they may serve without reproach; through Jesus Christ our Lord. O eternal Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea; Vouchsafe to take into thy almighty and most gracious protection our country‘s Navy, and all who serve therein. WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. "

Our Founding Fathers brought this essential freedom into existence against great odds through great adversity. It is under attack now in the defining Constitutional struggle of our times.
