Officials said an outbreak of a significant livestock disease has hit New Mexico, forcing quarantines and increased safeguards.
Veterinarian Jerry Cosper has been busy checking horses for signs of the vesicular stomatitis or VS. He said he's seen eight cases in the past few weeks.
Basically, what we are looking for is a couple of things on these guys here," Cosper said. "We want to check their lips, and this mare here doesn't have any lesions at all. But we are looking at their gums and how nice and clean and smooth that is. That's all normal."
The virus was first diagnosed in Otero County last month, and since then cases of VS have surfaced in Valencia, Socorro and San Miguel counties.

New Mexico PING!
Not good. I hope they can get it under control quickly. With lack of hay and so many ranchers selling off their stock because they couldn’t feed them, the fires and this, we need a break.

The name of the disease is “vesicular stomatitis or VS” per the OP post.

Presstitutes! Bah, HUMBUG!
Also, “livestock”, while technically correct, has a very different connotation than if they had said “horse disease”.
“Significant livestock disease” implies something along the lines of hoof and mouth; scrapies or blue tongue (sheep); brucellosis; mad cow, etc.
That is not to denigrate horses, nor the seriousness of the disease to horse owners; but the head line could easily be misconstrued to mean a market-affecting disease of meat animals.
I was also dismayed to see the vet quoted as to the normalcy of what he was looking at, rather than describing what he was looking for...but that might have been helpful to somebody.
The seed is planted in Mexico soon to reach it’s intended target the thorn in the side of this administration, the American border states. I look behind the curtain much to often but I am always led their, how is this possible? ha!
