A Generous Gift Has Been Made In Your Name To Obama 2012 (The Campaign Has No Shame)

There’s desperation. Then there’s the Obama-Biden re-election campaign’s fundraising operation.

Remember that Seinfeld episode where George Costanza, because he’s cheap and didn’t want to buy co-workers anything for Christmas, gave everyone a card saying a gift had been made in their name to the “Human Fund”? The Human Fund didn’t exist. George made it up because he was just that cheap.

But those “I gave your gift to someone else” charitable donations do exist. I get a few of them every year from people who shouldn’t be giving me gifts in the first place. It never occurred to me to check and see if the charity actually exists.

I’ve worked at a few non-profits, organizations whose existence is based upon the donations of others. I was in policy and thankfully never had to ask anyone for a donation, but I was in the room a lot when those asks happened. I could never, ever do it, but I’m thankful people who can are out there.

So I’m not unfamiliar with the concept of asking for donations. But those donations are never requested of people without jobs or who don’t have the money to donate. The potential donors knew what was coming precisely because they could afford it.

That’s what makes the latest tactic from the Obama-Biden re-election campaign so weird.

The “Obama event registry” is something new in politics – an ask that couples who are getting married forego gifts and money to help the president. And it’s not just limited to weddings. They want birthday and anniversary money, too.

The whole text of the “ask” would be a hilarious parody post if shameless reality hadn’t beaten The Onion to it. Here it is:

Got a birthday, anniversary, or wedding coming up?

Let your friends know how important this election is to you—register with Obama 2012, and ask for a donation in lieu of a gift. It’s a great way to support the President on your big day. Plus, it’s a gift that we can all appreciate—and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl.

Setting up and sharing your registry page is easy—so get started today. (link removed)

Take a second and reread that. I’ll wait.

Can you believe a President of the United States, or even a candidate for dog catcher, would think that is a good idea?

“Hey young couples just starting out, instead of creating a nest egg, saving for a down-payment for a house or simply paying for your wedding and reception, give your money to the President!” It’s the audacity of self-importance.

This tactlessness got me thinking – what other sorts of “asks” could the Obama 2012 team come up with?

“Do you have a terminal disease? That’s a tragedy, just as President Obama not winning a second term would be a tragedy. So as you get your affairs in order don’t forget to add the campaign to your last will and testament. Your family can have your furniture; we just want your cash. If you can survive long enough to sell the furniture, that’d be peachy. Cash is king, you know.

The campaign probably will find a more subtle way to make that ask. But a slogan is needed for this latest shamelessness:

“Help me fight corporate greed by giving me your kid’s birthday money!”

“Honeymoons are for suckers!”

“Since we’re all in the same boat, why not make it the Titanic?”

“President Obama already screwed your kid’s future, so why not let him screw their present too?”

“You can keep the money from your second marriage. Obama needs your cash now!”

“Seriously, if the concept of this appeals to you at all you should just send in all your money because you’ll probably just end up spending it all on meth.”

Jokes aside, this ploy just shows the desperation of the Obama campaign. The cash squeeze has begun. There are only so many vapid movie stars they can lure to their $40,000-per-plate dinners. New cash cows must be found to milk.

Mitt Romney is now raising more money than President Obama. That’s not just a sign of his failure on the economy, it’s an indication his former big donors have lost faith in his ability to govern effectively. One can hide incompetence only so long.

That the campaign would think this would work and not be a public-relations disaster shows how out of touch it is. Or how much staffers have bought into the Obama “cult of personality.”

Whatever the case, there’s no reason to think this venture won’t be as big a disaster as the president’s term has been for the economy. But if you want to balance things out, my birthday was Friday. In lieu of contributing to President Obama’s campaign, send cash to me. Thanks in advance.

Just write him a check for $0.50 - fifty cents.

It will cost them several dollars to process the check and file the required paperwork.

Better yet, just send a slice of wedding “toast” to the White House.

Not too subtle message that “you are.....”

Just one step beyond "Trick or Treat for UNICEF!".

Shameless Liberals. If anyone donated to Obama in my name, I'd have to hurt them or cause them great public embarrassment... no less would do.

This would be gauche enough if the economy weren’t down the loo, but given all the destruction generated by this administration, how audacious is it for the Won to say, “I know how to use your wedding gifts better than you do, so send ‘em my way.”

And I thought the Kennedys were arrogant.

This has got to be some laundering scheme masquerading as just more of the usual Narcissism.

Love the comments at the Onion... Here are a few:

Not long before they start hitting up kids for their tooth fairy money. Or, The “hope and change” fairy.

Funerals will be targeted next, a donation in lieu of flowers. The dead won’t mind, they still vote for him.

How much lower? Donate when a job is lost or there is an abortion? Possibilities are endless and craven.

He wants graduation money, too. As soon as he lends it to you.. But you can pay it back some day when you find a job, or your children can pay back the student loan!

Obama is not pandering....Panhandling......as in begging for money....

He should just use his golf money! Or his wife’s vacation money instead!

Really????? Next he will tell you to sell your sperm, eggs and soul , all for a good cause...his relection! Bush probably told him to try this!

When will he call for everyone’s first-born to be donated to him?

So tell me again - If the middle class can no longer afford to give political donations, why would they want to donate to the campaign of the person most in charge of their decent into poverty?

Yeah, well Goldman Sachs has the lack of donations from the middle class covered.

So what you’re saying is, Obama supporters are losers who can’t afford to contribute any more than 55 lousy bucks, and Romney supporters work hard and have the resources to support their candidate with sizeable contributions? I’ll take successful, hard workers over a bunch of lazy losers ANY day.

I wonder if any Obama supporters are sending in some of the unemployment or welfare money they get?

The scumbag Obama has to work twice as hard - remember, half of his voters are dead...

Obama has been on government handouts his entire pathetic life. Back to Chicago you streetwalking hustler...

Saying that campaign donations are a “gift” also adds poisonous politics to private affairs. A Republican told of such a gift is offended. A Democrat told this likely needs the money or would have given themselves, so the offer is redundant.
But does this act put people who would not or could not vote on Obama’s “acceptable contact list”?

Send the Obama campaign a note stating that you donated instead to the ‘Marriage Equality Foundation’ in his name.

Or a note stating that you were going to send in the deposit returns on the plastic soda containers but Michelle convinced you to quit instead. Include a few coupons for Coke, Pepsi and Sprite.

Send them a note stating that you would be thrilled to donate but are too focused right now on saving up for the down payment on a Chevy Volt.

If the regime is doing this it won’t be long until you see obama campaign staff along the highways collecting aluminum cans to recycle for cash or we may see the first yard sale at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

I use to watch the show, “Married with Children” and one time, the neighbor Marcy came over and told Al that she donated some money in his name to the NOW (National Organization of Women). Al Bundy wasn’t happy with it ! LOL

Yes, I like the idea of sending a note to Obama saying that instead of giving him a big campaign contribution, I bought the kids some great gifts.

My kids future depends upon getting rid of Obama so it makes sense to give the money to the kids.

If I donate $0.01 to Obama with a credit card, I wonder what it would cost to process it?

In history I read where kids in schools were asked to donate pennies to help build, or fund, the pedestal where the Statue of Liberty was to be set. Thousands of kids all over NYC and the States sent in their pennies. Maybe, just maybe someone would set up a foundation for President Obamugabe’s presidential campaign. Imagine all the pennies flooding in. I bet in a few months he’d have thousands of dollars of kiddies pennies.

PS - I'm sure some wit on FR could come up with a slogan.

"Pennies For The President" PFTP Fund or something. Bumper stickers and such. Instead of that stupid logo he uses, have a penny there instead. Photoshop the logo over a penny.

I tried that with one of his websites. There was a $5.00 minimum, so I didn't make the contribution. Also, I didn't want to be on their mail and email lists.

No...just send them used toasters and tell them to have a garage sale. Better yet, send them potato sacks and tell them to have Michelle wear the sacks so they can divert the cash from her wardrobe stash.
