The Obama administration said Monday it is suspending existing agreements with Arizona police over enforcement of federal immigration laws, and said it has issued a directive telling federal authorities to decline many of the calls reporting illegal immigrants that the Homeland Security Department may get from Arizona police.
Administration officials, speaking on condition they not be named, told reporters they expect to see an increase in the number of calls they get from Arizona police but that wont change President Obamas decision to limit whom the government actually tries to detain and deport.
We will not be issuing detainers on individuals unless they clearly meet our defined priorities, one official said in a telephone briefing.
The official said that despite the increased number of calls, which presumably means more illegal immigrants being reported, the Homeland Security Department is unlikely to detain a significantly higher number of people and wont be boosting personnel to handle the new calls.
We do not plan on putting additional staff on the ground in Arizona, the official said.
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that Arizona may not impose its own penalties for immigration violations, but it said state and local police could check the legal status of those they have reasonable suspicion to believe are in the country illegally.
That means police statewide can immediately begin calling to check immigration status but federal officials are likely to reject most of those calls.

Call me a hothead but I’d boot all Federal offices out of arizona if I were the Gov.
134 days until November 6th.
like someone said earlier today . . . start putting them on a bus to various blue states. a bus ticket and a 500.00 debit card. then lets see how they like that. play hard ball or go home GOP.
Which is why you never vote for any politician who is not in favor of deporting 100% of all Illegal Aliens. A vote for someone not 100% Alien Deportation is a vote for Amnesty
Isn’t it great how electing a black POTUS has brought us all TOGETHER...?
And Mexico and Egypt love us soooo much more...!
obama is a bit like the devil, who was enraged because he only had a short time. and as long as congress won’t impeach, there’s no reason for him to stop.
So the Feds are refusing to enforce this Federal law too.
Lawlessness: It’s the 0bama Standard.
Send them to Southern California. No one would notice. Now Arizona should pass the Alabama law to go with it...
It’s Leftist v.s. Leftist, for ‘12 POTUS. How does U.S. conservatism, actually, win, in the race for ‘12 POTUS?
The next move will be to ensure that illegals have the opportunity to vote. Questioning their credentials will be declared a hate crime.
“Call me a hothead but Id boot all Federal offices out of arizona if I were the Gov.”
Here’s a strongly worded retort from Mittens;
Todays decision underscores the need for a President who will lead on this critical issue and work in a bipartisan fashion to pursue a national immigration strategy. President Obama has failed to provide any leadership on immigration. This represents yet another broken promise by this President. I believe that each state has the duty—and the right—to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities. As Candidate Obama, he promised to present an immigration plan during his first year in office. But 4 years later, we are still waiting.

Excellent idea. Hope they do it. Can you imagine a half dozen busloads unloading in downtown San Diego? Think it would garner attention?
I have to say, that’s one of Mitt’s better waffle iron creations. (I think a President Romney will be a fence straddler, the sheer inertia involved in the presidency making waffling impractical.)
Arizona must have some unused detention facilities that can be used to house the undocumented, until the Feds agree to take them off their hands—”Cuidad de Carpa” or “Agujero Grande.”
She was Arizona's Big Sis before she was ours.
Must be plenty of buyer's regret in Arizona today.
Don’t bother calling ICE, deliver them to the ICE Hq in DC by the bus load and if they want to release them in DC then it will be their problem. And I hope when someone does get murdered by an illegal who ICE refused to pick the family files a wrongfully death suit against “Big Sis’ and Lord Obama. Finally, if Romney does not stop trying to play both sides and make a firm statement that on day 1 of his Presidency he will order the Justice Dept to pick up and deport every illegal they are notified of he may wind up losing this election. He has been trying to be too cute with his words lately. Would someone whisper in his ear and tell him “bipartisan” is a dirty word that means the GOP will take it in the rear.
This may go down as the most blatantly childish act from a notoriously dysfunctional administration.
I can’t wait!
This scumbag and his Marxist comrades must be voted out of office.
You know, if we actually had an honest press, there’d be comparisons to Willie Horton the first time an illegal committed a capital crime in Arizona.
How can that be legal? Oh, I forgot for a moment. The Won obeys only the laws he wants to.
“Send them to Southern California. No one would notice”
So true socal is a suburb of mexico already
“Heres a strongly worded retort from Mittens;”
Would somebody tell that moron and his sidekick tonto rubio that we already have a plan its called the LAW... Enforce it or GTF out of our life....
Absolutely. I think the "Dreamer" non-amnesty amnesty for those who are 16-30 and claim to be here for five years is a direct threat to the election. When they are processed and given work permits, the Obama proxies will be outside the door registering them to vote and the Feds are making sure that the states can't prevent the vote fraud.
Some might call that disloyal. Some might call it oathbreaking. Some might even say it hints of treason.
If we actually had an honest press, we’d all be deaf from the sounds of sawing and hammering to build all the gallows needed.
I’d go a step further.
I’d suspend all tax collections from the state for the federal government too.
AZ is NOT getting what they pay for.
Tent sales rise....
Whereupon the insufferably hypocritical Obama would sue of course. But it would help the economy of Nebraska: they’d sell record batches of popcorn!
Does he actually believe them? Will he act on them if elected?
I wish I were sure that he did.
Trying to have it both ways... promising a more liberal immigration policy while decrying the lack of legality in Obama’s move. Mitt does look like he wants it all to be Constitutional, but he ought to be bold in saying so. This is not hugely better than the 2008 Kentucky Fried Gentleman’s approach.
I wonder what he will do when he lose Thursday on Obama Care?
Homeland Security our ashes. Grandma gets patted down at the airport but some murderous drug lord or even some foreign terrorist can slip through the border or cannot be stopped via ‘profiling’ is sickening. How many American lives have or will be lost due to murderous illegal invaders. Our Govt. mostly SUCKs and plays politics with innocent lives at stake.
Janet Napolitano should be brought up on charges, or impeached (or something) for dereliction of her duty to enforce the laws of our country as well as our constitution. She (and her boss, bam-bam) are worse than the corner drug dealer and child molester, because of the high offices that they hold and the great responsibility they have to abide by and enforce our laws.
Un-flippin’-believable.
The law means nothing to these bastards.
If it happens... well if Mitt knows what’s good for him he won’t prance right up and promise the country Romneycare.
I am not very learned in the area of border patrol matters, so I need some people’s input.
I was talking with hubby about this, and he said that it made sense since Article I of the Constituion has the authority to establish rules for naturalization, commerce, etc, so the SCOTUS ruing follows the constitution well. He also said that the problem stems from the fact that the FedGov is NOT doing their part—the FedGov is still traitorous but the SCOTUS ruling is not a violation of states’s rights.
This is our current understanding of the situation, but I’m curious to see what older and wiser people than we think, as well.
His speech is already written.
“I do not agree with the supreme court. I will move forward with implementation and enforcement of the law” (and the wimpy republicans and the SCOTUS can try and stop me)
“Looks like “Homeland” “Security” isn’t at all interested in securing the homeland.
Some might call that disloyal. Some might call it oathbreaking. Some might even say it hints of treason.”
____
I completely agree.
NOT a violation of state’s rights??? As of this ruling, there ARE none! Read Antonin Scalia’s dissent.
I do not agree with the supreme court. I will move forward with implementation and enforcement of the law (and the wimpy republicans and the SCOTUS can try and stop me)
Then again Sebelius did say they have a contingency plan...
What is that plan? CW2?
where can I find a copy of that?
In a nutshell, the SCOTUS just confirmed what we all believed: The federal government will enforce only those federal laws it wishes to enforce, regardless of the impact on the states.
It will sue states, like Arizona, trying to address the problem that Washington DC ignores, if the state tries to help itself.
The federal government is a creation of the states and it is out of control.
We need a count down clock at the top of every Free Republic page - days - hours.
Your husband is correct. The states are held hostage to a lawless regime and it would seem there is nothing we can do about it. A very UNcivil war is already being waged against us. Americans are under seige from our own government which seems to have correctly calculated that they can get away with it...because they HAVE.
Obama is helping us take the country back. For years washington has been given a blank check, but now people are waking up to that being a terrible idea. Arizona is fighting and so are other states and if the states choose to disobey the feds, there isn’t a thing washington can do about it. The people no longer believe in washington, like past generations. I like the rebellion that is brewing. The states have the power, now take it back. Cut off the money flow to washington. Exciting times indeed.
Other states should ban together and help Arizona take their illegals off the streets. Build prisons, send in law enforcement like when a storm hits and states help one another. The only power washington has, is given to it by the states. Let freedom ring from sea to shining sea. If we want a true change, it is time to take it and not wait around for it to be given.
