GM Recalls Nearly 500,000 Chevy Cruzes for...Engine Fires
Breitbart.com ^ | 6-25-12 | Seton Motley

Oops.

Concerns that Chevrolet Cruzes could catch fire have caused General Motors (GM) to recall more than 475,000 of the popular compact sedans, the automaker said Friday...

All (Cruze) cars manufactured from September 2010 to May of this year are subject to the recall.

Already getting Chevy Volt flashbacks? Of course you are.

In January, GM “called back” every single Volt ever sold in the U.S., to fix the (fire problem on the) allegedly already “fixed” battery….

It’s important for a company to create a branding identity--something all its products possess as an underlying, unifying theme.

GM has successfully identified and implemented theirs: combustibility.

And this is not the first Cruze recall.

First, 2,100 Cruzes were recalled when steering wheels started spontaneously falling off.

But that was just the tip of the Titanic.

Government Motors is now forced to recall ALL 154,112 2011 Cruzes - for multiple problems. There was, again, the steering. And an automatic transmission with a phantom Park – it looks like it’s out of gear, but (Surprise!) it’s not.

Not a very “fuel-efficient vehicle” if you can't disengage the transmission.

At once propping up the uber-failed “success” of the Barack Obama Administration’s amped-up auto bailout - and its non-green non-energy crusade.

We have been told by GM that people come in to look at the $41,000 Volt, but leave with the $17,000 Cruze.

"The Volt is leading to a lot of Cruze sales," said Mark Reuss, GM's CEO for North America. Customers are coming in to see the Volt, but “not everyone can buy a Volt,” Reuss said. The Volt has a starting price that’s nearly two and half times greater than the Cruze’s price.

It’s good to know they aren’t missing out on any of the excitement.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t the volt based on the Cruze?
and wasn’t the Volt’s problem due to it;s Lithium battery?

I don’t watch television, but my wife does, and she was watching the Olympic trials...I saw several commercials for the Chevy Cruze, and they were touting the J.D. Power award for safety!

I guess the J.D. Power award for safety means as much as the Nobel Peace Prize, or the Pulizer Prize.

no where on that page will you find the word “fire”

I guess they don’t care about that.

Looks like it’s based on crash tests. Not “does it burst in to flames” tests.

But the Cruze doesn’t have a Lithium battery.
Can we then infer that the battery was not the Volt’s problem and they may not have figured out the cause of the problem?

No.

The problem with the Cruze involves a cover where spilled or leaking fluids can gather. When the cover heats up, the fluids can ignite.

Volts problem is apparently electrical.

I change my own oil and always check for leaks afterwards.
That’s one recall I’m not in a rush to get done.

The oil filter hsg has an o-ring that seals it to the block.
Per the Cruze forum, it’s happened that oil change techs install the new o-ring that comes in the box with the filter cartridge but forget to remove the old one, resulting in a leak that apparently accumulates in a place that gets hot.

This is a Cruze that went on fire:

Though in this case, the fire apparently started in the trunk and is not related to the recall, it does make one wonder if that's the next recall.

In the case of the Celica, IIRC the reason that one went on fire was because dude had his aftermarket stereo system short out and burst into flames - that pic has made the rounds before. or one just like it anyway.

You may have a point, there. However, I’m guessing you didn’t see the other thing the Cruze is being recalled for. I don’t recall ever hearing of a Japanese car they forgot to weld the back on properly. Or that has the clutch fluid leak out once the clutch gets worn.

The official recall Q&A: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM423012/RCORRD-12V289-6767.pdf

It’s pretty funny. Apparently if you drive it with a worn clutch, it leaks hydraulic fluid as well. And someone forgot to weld the back of the car on properly. From that document:

*******

FINAL Q&A for 2011-2012 Chevrolet Cruze Underhood Fires and Potential Missing Rear Compartment Welds Safety Recalls. (Populations: U.S. 413,148; Canada 61,299; Export 701 [Israel only])

Q&A
Q1. What is the proposed fix for the underhood fires?
A1. The engine shield, also known as the belly pan, can “catch” oil or other hot fluids that might drip from the engine. This occurs most often if an oil change is done improperly or improper parts are used. If these fluids make contact with hot engine parts, such as a manifold or catalytic converter, and then contact the engine shield, a fire could start and spread. Modifying the shield will help prevent any liquids from being trapped in the engine compartment. In Cruzes with manual transmissions, continued driving with a worn clutch may cause extremely hot or burning hydraulic fluid to leak from the manual transmission vent. Modifying the shield should also help prevent the hydraulic fluid from becoming trapped in the engine compartment, where a fire could start and spread.

*********

Q3. What about the missing welds? How did this happen?
A3. A welding process error in one body shop station created a condition in which up to 249 cars may be missing some welds in the rear of the vehicle.
Q4. So what will you do to cars found missing welds?
A4. The first step is to inspect. Corrections will be made with mechanical fasteners (bolts and rivets) if necessary.
Q5. What if a customer with a car missing welds doesn’t want it anymore? Will GM repurchase the car?
A5. We are always happy to work with customers. We believe the repair more than adequately addresses the missing welds issue.

*******

I wouldn’t be too happy about someone bolting and riveting my car together because they forgot to weld it up instead... You gotta wonder about it; if the lazy UAW asshats couldn’t be bothered to weld the chassis together properly, what else did they ‘forget’ to do?

I checked with “sources” and that welding is robotic, so rather than some UAW guy, it was a programming error on the part of a white collar person.
