York: Romney's timidity on court's immigration ruling
washington examiner ^ | Monday June 25, 2012 | Byron York

Posted on 06/25/2012 7:51:24 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

In Arizona v. United States, the Supreme Court unanimously agreed that the federal government has no basis to nullify the "show me your papers" provision of Arizona's immigration law. Conservatives Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, moderate Anthony Kennedy, liberals Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg -- even Obama appointee Sonia Sotomayor -- all shot down the administration's effort to stop that part of the law. (Obama appointee Elena Kagan stayed out of it because she had taken part in the action as a member of the administration.)

Yet even with that unanimity -- a position supported, if the polls are correct, by a solid majority of the public and an overwhelming majority of Republicans -- GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney would not specifically say he agreed with the court's view on "show me your papers."

[...]

Romney's words again suggested he agrees with the court's opinion on "show me your papers." But again, he offered nothing to make clear his position on the central issue of the Arizona immigration fight.

Perhaps Romney was just exercising his legendary caution. But if Scalia and Sotomayor can agree on something, what would be the risk in Romney agreeing with it, too?

Though it touched on many questions, the political fight over the Arizona immigration law focused on a very specific issue: Should police who have stopped a person for some legitimate reason then check that person's status if they have reason to believe he or she might be in the country illegally? On Monday, Mitt Romney had the perfect opportunity to align himself with the conservative -- and popular -- side of the question, and declined to take it.

Why would Romney not just say, “I stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the duly elected govenors of the states and the citizens of the states. I stand with their state sovereignty and their citizens.”

You're right, TS. Romney was just handed a FREE GIFT, courtesy of the Supreme Court and Borracho Hussein Obama, and he totally dropped it. Again.

Folks, this is what a quisling traitor to American values and conscience looks like. Even when a winning hand is dealt to him, and all he has to do is lay it on the table, he chokes, and says or does something calculated to do more for the status quo, than for the average American citizen.

If there was ever a time that the nation needed a 180 degree counterpoint to challenge a disastrous incumbent president, this is it. Instead, we get Mr. Mumbles, who can't articulate a conservative point of view to save his hide. Utterly, utterly pathetic.

Romney has no courage, no guts. He is a hollow man.

He takes no stand, one way or the other.

Except that his record, the only tangible thing we have to actually measure him by, is chock full of lying, Progressive Liberal actions, and policy positions.

I agree with your assessment as far as it goes, but Romney is much worse than just a hollow man or a pretend Republican, he's a Progressive Liberal in a very cheap, thread-bare Republican suit.

As I been saying, Romney is terrified of the Hispanic vote and has no idea how to deal with it. Expect him to act lame and empty when these things happen.

Mr. RomneyCARE (author of DEATH PANELS) is as
“conservative” and courageous now, as he will Ever be.

Mr. RomneyCARE will shortly become more LIBERAL
and proIslam, proIllegal, and proTAXES
than Obama and the entire DNC.
The GOPe are as evil now, as when they attacked
Gov. Palin on the EVE of Election 2008.

Wee Willie Mitty has no idea how to deal with anything in life...

hes had no challenges in his 66 years...

Hes had everything handed to him...

Even his wife was picked out by Daddy who moved her into their home when she was about 15 to teach her how to be a good wife Romney style...

He was a mollycoddled spoiled little rich boy whos idea of an innocent pranbk was to attack a boy and cut off his hair and to destroy golf courses..

He was protected from serving his country by a goofball father...while other boys slogged in the jungle Willie dodged the draft and ran to France where he lived in a mansion and drove a top of the line Citreon...and caused 2 accidents...one fatal..with Daddy flying over to cover for him..

He never had to work or sweat his way through college wondering how he was going to afford next semester ..Though his wife did admit they nearly had to sell some stock once...

He had $250 MILLION in 2008 probably much more now...Those off shore accounts to avoid taxes do help...

He owns at least 4 mansions now that hes sold 2 of them...

He spent MILLIONS buying some CA seaside property to pull down a perfectly good 5,000 house and build a 12,000 one in its place...complete with elevators for his cars...among them his wifes TWO Caddies...

Who lives like that ???

Willie is out of touch with normal Americans..

with normal challenge laden lives...

If a real problem arose he would not know how to deal with it...

Republican gutlessness is always on display! These pricks will not defend their women, their children’s future or even themselves against the anti-white bigotry....they are actually worthless riders on the principles of better people!

When people suffer from the extreme cognitive dissonance that results from self-proclaimed conservatives having to vote for a progressive, liberal, Nelson Rockefeller-reincarnation whose family background and political history has been in opposition to the Reagan and Goldwater Revolutions, anger is inevitable. It's difficult to admit to one's self that you are being a hypocrite. If Romney was the nominee of the other party (which would make far more sense), these same people would be leading the choruses of criticism, rather than singing faint praises.

Those of us who are committed to not voting for either Romney or Obama but for all conservatives down the ticket don't have such an internal conflict. I've only had the opportunity to vote with enthusiasm for President three times (1980, 1984, and 2000) but voted R the other times as the candidate was at least acceptable. That is not the case this year.

Ditto!

Not liking Romney I still would like to see someone confronting Obama on the things he does that we hate, but Romney won't do it. He got what he needed from conservatives so now he is looking to more moderate/liberal voters.

The real scary part is when/if they get the POTUS office, There is no telling what they will do once in office and when they do the whole Republican club : FNC and those on the Sunday shows, and many freepers here, feel a need to defend what they once cursed and vice versa.

Remember when Republicans claimed bailouts and green energy and deficits and amnesty were good for this country? Well it could be coming back if Romney got elected.

That Romney is timid is not news! Where is bomb thrower Newt when we need him? Or even Perry. But we have been dealt Romney. You play with what cards are dealt. Wishful thinking is not reality. The TIMID voters picked Romney, not you or me. We all know that.

My point is though, even the timidity of Romney & GOP does not seem to be hurting at the polls. I see Romney winning in November.

Bur I concur with you that only a revolution of sorts will turn the country direction around. It will take much more economic pain for that to take place. Most people are still eating good, drinking good, and driving nice cars.

I thought the PEOPLE voted in primaries, not ONLY the party hacks. Prudence says make the best with the cards dealt in your hand. There is still the opportunity to elect Tea-party types to congress. Mitt is pliable.

I’m with you, CC. When the RNC suggested that I hold my nose in the past and vote for their Rino candidates as “better than....”, I’ve done so and felt like dog excrement afterwards...

Now I know that it was because I was betraying my values while pledging allegiance to a phony GOP-E that doesn’t appreciate or even understand Constitutional Conservatism.

When I vote, I stand before God, my country and my family,. It is a sacred privilege and not to be taken lightly. Therefore, I have made a decision that I will no longer cast my ballot for anyone who does not profess to uphold founding principles.

Willard Romney is not a Conservative but rather a left leaning party liberal Republican who will throw the Tea Party and all that we stand for under the bus before the ink on his nomination papers is dry. No thanks.
