Vallejo man with permitted concealed weapon stops restaurant robbery
Vallejo Times-Herald ^ | 6/25/12 | Times-Herald Staff

A Vallejo man carrying a legal concealed weapon halted a reported robbery in progress at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Subway sandwich restaurant in the 600 block of Lewis Brown Road, Sgt. Jeff Bassett said.

Bassett said a suspect entered the restaurant and ordered a sandwich, and when the clerk was finished with it, he brandished a knife and demanded cash.

Meanwhile, the man, described as a 25-year-old Vallejoan with a permit for a concealed weapon, drew his gun and confronted the suspect who ran out of the restaurant before he was able to take anything, Bassett said.

The suspect is described as a black man, 60, with long black hair who was wearing black clothing.

There's a few white Hispanics in that neighborhood.

How does one get a concealed carry permit in the Bay Area? The last I checked, unless you had connections, it was virtually impossible (and expensive). Good for the citizen, I’m just envious about how he got a permit in these parts...

I live in Kern County where ccw’s are nearly “shall-issue.” In the bay area they are nearly “no-issue.”

He could have gotten it in a Conservative county, they are good throughout the entire state, and merely been a visitor to the area.

In Sharpton's Utopia- the suspect was entitled to have his "sandwich" and eat it too. The man who confronted him violated his rights.

Would have been a nicer ending if he had put several controlled paired shots into the man with the knife.

The guy didnt bring his own knife to cut his sammich!

San Francisco has 800,000 people. The Bay Area has almost 8,000,000. California is a May Issue state. Sheriff/Police-Chief "reserve almost exclusive authority to issue or deny California CCW licenses. This map seems up-to-date. See "May Issue" link above for recent history.

That is not what a Concealed Carry is about. The training I got is that because you have a concealed weapon you avoid confrontation. Someone calls you a name, you ignore it. If someone tries to shake you down for money and you don't see any real threat, you don't escalate it into a major confrontation when you are carrying.

Using that weapon is a very serious matter. Carrying it comes with a responsibility to avoid using it whenever possible. The guy in the restaurant did it exactly correct.

I don`t know whether Vallejo has any additional laws specifically, but it`s surprisingly doable in Solano County if you own property there and take a firearms safety class. My stepdad had a CCW permit in Vacaville until he died at 92 in February.

Incidentally, my 85-year-old mother carries as well. She has a CCW permit issued by Tehama County.

A man standing in front of you with a knife demanding money from anyone IS A REAL THREAT, and is A MAJOR CONFRONTATION.

The good guy didnt choose to be in that situation (I dont know about California) and was in no way required to retreat. I am glad there was no loss of life but he was well with in his rights to totally ruin this guys day. After all brandishing and threatening harm with a deadly weapon is a very serious matter.

It would have precluded this guy from going out, recharging with meth and a few shots of rotgut and trying it again in my neighborhood.

Sooner or later, one way or another, the bad guys will come to know that the good guys are tierd of their crap and just aint gonna take it any more.

Nobody was hurt. The firearm was not discharged. The situation was handled correctly. Threat of force deterred the criminal.

I did not say it was not a real threat or a serious confrontation. I said you only resort to your concealed weapon when there is a real and serious threat.

Taking it a step further and shooting someone when that is not necessary is against all training for concealed carry. The holder of a concealed carry is not a judge and executioner. When that becomes the action, the cause of concealed carry is hurt.

Some will say it would feel good to permanently put a bad guy away. It will not feel good and it will lead to very serious legal trouble that I guarantee you will not want.

The guy at the restaurant that stopped the robbery handed it exactly correct. No shots fired. Robbery stopped.
