AUSTRALIAN Olympian Daniel Batman has been killed in a car crash on a remote Northern Territory highway, southeast of Darwin.
The 31-year-old was driving on the Arnhem Highway when his car veered off the road about midnight on Monday, the NT News reported.
Debris including side panels, a front bumper, shocks and the engine - strewn 100m along the road - was seen by a passing motorist about 7am.
Batman was once married to fellow sprinter and Hockeyroo Nova Peris and the couple have two children.
He was based in Canberra and was in the Top End visiting his children after separating in 2010.
Northern Territory Police detective Acting Sen-Sgt John Worrall said the crash occurred near the Adelaide River Bridge.
"Although we're still in the early stages of the investigation, it appears as though the man was travelling east on the Arnhem Highway when the vehicle left the road, crashed into a culvert and landed 10m off the road," he said.
Jingle Bells, Batman smells
Robin laid an egg.
The Batmobile lost a wheel
and the Joker got away (Hey!)
I’ve had some bad times, lived through some sad times,
A
but this time your hurtin’ won’t heal.

You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel.
You...... go to your room. No dessert for you!
(but very funny)
A more efficient term for the distribution of debris would be to say “yard sale”.
Lol, very good!
Yep, I’ve been feeling real bad about it, too. I could’ve picked one with a title like “Olympic sprinter dies in crash,” but noooo. I went out of my way to find an article that had a title that would lend itself to merriment. WHAT is wrong with me???
Generations of Australian schoolchildren have been disappointed on field trips to Melbourne at being told they are going to see a statue of Batman, and encountering this:
He certainly wasn’t going to the London Olympics having retired as a professional athlete in 2008, but he was an Olympian having competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the 400m.
He wasn’t a world beater, but his best time over the 100m was 10.19 seconds.
10.19 is pretty darn fast. No longer world class but not bad at all especially since his event was apparently the 400.
“Welcome to eternity. Name?”
“I’m Batman.”
