California used to be a heck of a state, it used to be thought of as the Golden state, sunshine, joy, surfs up!, music, oranges and Hollywood glamour, forests and bikinis, VW bugs with Porsche engines, Disneyland and San Francisco restaurants.

Today it is an old hag past her glory days, desperate and having trouble paying the rent, but still fighting to cling to an image of glamour even as the infrastructure crumbles and community and ‘California’ are forgotten concepts, there are no common feelings of unity and hope for the future out here.

California is purely a place for taking what you can get from it while the getting is good. A direction that the US has been going in for 40 years and is acted on by the millions of foreigners who arrive by the planeloads to get what they can get here with no care about the American future or the hard earned American past, and certainly no concept of what used to be thought of as America’s wonderful destiny of spreading the American way of life to the world and liberating the human spirit, instead we imported the world’s bleak existence into America and have become irretrievably bogged down in diverse humanity in mass, forever.

Good list, except I'd add Bexar County and Refugio... /g

I'll add the Pedernales River to that list as well. I had a "foreigner" ask where to fish in the Peddernails river for white bass.

Were it not for family obligations I’d get back to Texas in a flash.

I’ve wanted you as a Texan since ‘04 or abouts.

Good one, too!

I spent a lot of time in Louisiana as well, so while not strictly Texas only, here's a couple of extra credit items:

1. While most here can probably pronounce Nacogdoches (Texas) correctly, how do you pronounce Natchitoches (Louisiana)?

2. What is the difference between a "jackass" and a "coonass"?

I consider myself more Texian than Tarheel. /g I was extremely fortunate in that my work back then allowed me to travel the entire state. I got to visit every town or city with a newspaper, radio or TV station via the scenic back roads as well as the freeways and airports. I saw more of Texas than most native-born Texans ever do - perhaps that’s why I appreciated it so much.

I’d love to get back there, but doubt I’ll ever make it. However, if Texas ever decides to cut loose the loser crowd in DC and resume its former Republic status I’d give it a try... /g

Lived there for a while back in the 70s, there just wasn't the needed infrastructure for computer tech here in Texas but by the time we moved back to Texas in 1990 the writing was on the wall. And our visits back are getting less frequent partly because it's just so sad and not to mention unnecessary.

Still miss many aspects of it, our last location was Sonoma county and I doubt if I'll ever find a place as pretty not to mention my type of climate.

A shame and a pity.

You nailed the plight of California and ultimately the plight of the US very well.

Now you are not thinking. Yes it was the federal level that helped create the mess but it was the California voters that gave people that are not here legally free stuff which enticed them to come in waves.

Where I work and live there are many many leftists. I only have a couple of close ones.

I have been dropped by a few leftists for my conservativsm. I am more tolerant.

What I call a "jackass" and a "coonass" are probably offensive to some people. The first is every 0 bummer voter and the second is trailer park trash.

Rather than complain about California (I know, but listen) how about we ALL complain about moving jobs out of the country.

Every one of us.

Then we can compete between ourselves, as to who gets them.

Right now, we all lose.

I was using the terms as a joke, based on geography. The answer is:

The Sabine River! (the river that divides Texas and Louisiana)

That isn’t true, but illegals don’t vote anyway so that isn’t what made the California electorate become a solid blue state. Texas has about the same percentage of illegals as California.

Look at how the vote breaks down and look at more than a 100 years of American elections, Catholics vote democrat just as they did in 2008, and California is almost a third Catholic today.

Look at the voting results in post 117. Protestants vote republican and pro-life in California, Catholics don’t.

“20. Finally, you are 100% Texan if you have ever heard this conversation:
“You wanna coke?”
“Yeah.”
“What kind?”
“Dr. Pepper!”

LOL, yeah, basic conversation around here. “What kind of coke do you want?” It seems completely natural to me. Not sure how people ask that question outside the state.
