On the eve of the Supreme Courts health care ruling Thursday morning, a Democratic group has uncovered what it said was fresh evidence of Mitt Romneys one-time embrace of the individual insurance mandate that he now scorns.
Video of Mr. Romney from a March 2006 news conference when he was governor of Massachusetts shows the presumptive Republican nominee praising the passage of an individual mandate in the legislature as an essential part of the reforms he advocated.
With regards to the individual mandate, the individual responsibility program that I proposed, I was very pleased that the compromise between the two houses includes the personal responsibility mandate, he says in the video, which was found by the group American Bridge 21st Century.

Gaysachusetts wanted to get thus scrod, and it did.
You're a day late and dollar short with these anti-Romney pieces. Unless you have a viable option for the GOP candidate to replace Romney, you are becoming part of the problem in defeating our Marxist-in-Chief.
Why don't you join us in reality in helping to defeat the Kenyan.
Dittos
Great liberal spin with a misleading headline. Romney said the mandate was essential to the Massachusetts plan, not a National plan. It even says that later in the article. Nice try, though.
There are many viable options to replace Romney going into the the GOP convention.
Palin
Ryan
Santorum
Perry
Gingrich
None of the above have ever Advocated an Individual Mandate.
Gov health care, especially single payer or pool of gov ins policies is desired by many in corporate America. Healthcare for retirees promised by corporations to workers have grown to be cumbersome and expensive. At one point 50 percent of US auto company expenses involved healthcare for retirees. Many corporations want to concentrate on business not allocate a sizable chunk of their expenses running a health care company. They want to be rid of this and dump it onto the US gov and taxpayers. That is why no matter who we put in office, eventually the gov will end up with healthcare because corporate America desires it.
Obama, on the other hand, is effecting my state with his sick “cure-all”.
Romney should just say Mass wanted this, the rest of America doesn't, and I will repeal it. If some other crazy state wants it they can do it at the state level.
And he needs to keep reminding those that make under $250K it is now officially a TAX if you don't buy health insurance.
Should the GOP nominee be held accountable for his past actions and statements?
Romney is a great guy. It is Socialism that we rebel against.
Romney has a problem: He refuses to shed his Obamacare Godfather Image.
Ponder this from another thread:
First you had better get Romney to drop his crap about it being - - - simply unacceptable - - - that 20 million Americans still arent covered by Health Insurance.
If Romney wont dump his loyalty to the idea of an Insurance Safety net, then it is time to DUMP Romney with an ABSTAIN vote on the first ballot in Tampa.
BTW, Romneycare safety net can easily be expanded into Obamacare safety net without SOCTUS even lifting a finger.
Romneycare, ObamaCare; Obamalite, Obama, Treedle Dumb or Tweedle Dumber, eeney, meeney, miney what difference does it make?!
Can you show me where Romney was in favor of an individual mandate for all Americans?
The difference is huge. But we do not expect a nitwit like u to understand. States rights vs full fledged national socialism.
Screwed, blued, and tattooed.
Here’s an idea! Let’s all hate Romney so we can have four more years of the bottom feeding Kenyan! It’s time to get over it and play the hand we’ve been dealt. IMHO. ABO!!!
I never said that he advocated it on a national level, but he obviously did support a health care mandate.
Nice to see the NYT is still capable of doing investigative work when the mood strikes them.
My FRiend, I know at the end of the day, you and I are on the same team. I think we just have a different view of what we're able to do at this point in the game. If something were to happen at the convention, I'd be happy to vote for several of the folks you listed.
have you forgotten that fro all taxpayers the medicare tax has doubled and dividends go to 43%
