(CNSNews.com) The White House said Friday that the Obamacare insurance mandate tax is a penalty for not having insurance a statement that directly contradicts what the Supreme Court ruled Thursday.
According to press reports, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that the penalty was not a tax but a penalty.
In a 5-4 ruling issued just one day before, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that the mandate was not a penalty and was, in fact, a tax.
You can call it what you want, but it is affecting one percent of the population. Because most people either have health insurance or people do the responsible thing, and if they can afford health insurance they will purchase it, he said.

And whats this 1% crap? Thats 3,100,000 people. Didn't the King claim 50 million didn't have insurance, and that's why we needed obamacare?
This is just as scrambled as Robert’s opinion is.
Hammer him: Okay, if it’s not a tax, it’s unconstitutional. If it is constitutional, it’s a tax. Take your pick, Obozo. Heads we win, tails you lose.
Rommney needs to hammer him, hammer him, hammer him.
They can’t get away with that if the MSM would do their job. The Obama admin. made the argument before the SC that it was a tax as their strategy to have it stand as Constitutional. So Obama officially took that position before the court.
You know Dems: it depends on what the meaning of "is" is.
What a pile of crap!...Obama can call it anything he wants to! It doesn’t matter any more. Americans know what they have to do to get rid of this disease. Obama knows he’s in a world of hurt. Remember those mid-term election results?...That light at the end of the tunnnel is a train, Odinga!
Ah, but you forgot about the “Window of Truth” and what the “truth” is today.</off sarc>
OK, so he just admitted this is not equal protection under the law.
Yup. It WASN’T a tax before it WAS a tax before it’s NOT a tax. My heads spinning.
NOW I'm starting to get the idea that this free health care of 0bama's isn't so free after all....
If IRS collects it’s a tax.
THAT brings back the memories...
Taxation with misrepresentation
Uh-huh. Can we say transatlantic bridge in Kansas??
They can call it Moose Meat if they like. They hung their hat on this dreck legislation just like those opposing it did. And, the SCOTUS ruling makes it clear that it is a tax. Otherwise, why will the "penalty" be paid to the IRS or, alternatively, collected from your IRS tax refund if it is NOT a tax!!??
Inquiring minds, Bammy . . . .
How so? Is it an excise? Is it an impost? Is it apportioned? Is it a tax on income?
Those are the taxes Congress is allowed to impose. If it's none of those, it ain't constitutional.
When someone looks you in the eye like this and states boldly an obvious lie, they are either calling you too stupid to know it or too weak to call them on it. Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining. Is there not some way the Congress can be made to go on record and choose: Tax or Penalty? Somehow we are back inside of a Monty Python sketch. Yes, elections have consequences, but words have meanings, especially in the law.
The way I read it Roberts said it “could be characterized” as a tax. He didn’t say THIS IS A TAX!
Bottom line is somebody got to him.
One day after the SC gives him what he wants, he calls them a pack of liars. Thats gratitude,,,obama-style.
“One day after the SC gives him what he wants, he calls them a pack of liars.”
Putting massive pressure on them worked, and Obama’s going to keep that pressure going.
The legal challenges to Obamacare are NOT over, and he needs a compliant court.
For example, there are no exemptions to a tax like there can be with penalties.
Unfortunately, it is a brilliant political move. The white house refuses to call it a tax, but the SCOTUS calls it a tax. Zer0bama gets to move forward on it, continue to stuff it down our throats, and never has to call it a tax. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, and a tax by any other name smells just as sweet to the democraps.
Maybe Roberts and Obama should have got together and got their stories straight before the big announcement.
