(CNSNews.com) – The White House said Friday that the Obamacare insurance mandate tax is a penalty for not having insurance – a statement that directly contradicts what the Supreme Court ruled Thursday.

According to press reports, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that the penalty was not a tax but a penalty.

In a 5-4 ruling issued just one day before, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that the mandate was not a penalty and was, in fact, a tax.

“You can call it what you want, but it is affecting one percent of the population. Because most people either have health insurance or people do the responsible thing, and if they can afford health insurance they will purchase it,” he said.

Hammer him: Okay, if it’s not a tax, it’s unconstitutional. If it is constitutional, it’s a tax. Take your pick, Obozo. Heads we win, tails you lose.

Rommney needs to hammer him, hammer him, hammer him.

They can’t get away with that if the MSM would do their job. The Obama admin. made the argument before the SC that it was a tax as their strategy to have it stand as Constitutional. So Obama officially took that position before the court.

Zero is just giving the marching orders to the "news" media as to what line to report. Something like, "People are misreading the SCOTUS ruling. It's not really a tax. They just needed to use the word "tax" so it'll fit in with the Constitution".

You know Dems: it depends on what the meaning of "is" is.

What a pile of crap!...Obama can call it anything he wants to! It doesn’t matter any more. Americans know what they have to do to get rid of this disease. Obama knows he’s in a world of hurt. Remember those mid-term election results?...That light at the end of the tunnnel is a train, Odinga!

NOW I'm starting to get the idea that this free health care of 0bama's isn't so free after all....

If IRS collects it’s a tax.

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that the penalty was not a tax but a penalty.

Uh-huh. Can we say transatlantic bridge in Kansas??

They can call it Moose Meat if they like. They hung their hat on this dreck legislation just like those opposing it did. And, the SCOTUS ruling makes it clear that it is a tax. Otherwise, why will the "penalty" be paid to the IRS or, alternatively, collected from your IRS tax refund if it is NOT a tax!!??

Inquiring minds, Bammy . . . .

If it's a tax, it's constitutional

How so? Is it an excise? Is it an impost? Is it apportioned? Is it a tax on income?

Those are the taxes Congress is allowed to impose. If it's none of those, it ain't constitutional.

When someone looks you in the eye like this and states boldly an obvious lie, they are either calling you too stupid to know it or too weak to call them on it. Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining. Is there not some way the Congress can be made to go on record and choose: Tax or Penalty? Somehow we are back inside of a Monty Python sketch. Yes, elections have consequences, but words have meanings, especially in the law.

The way I read it Roberts said it “could be characterized” as a tax. He didn’t say THIS IS A TAX!

Bottom line is somebody got to him.
