Storm hits Washington DC area, thousands without power

(Reuters) - A powerful storm hit the U.S. capital on Friday, downing trees with wind gusts of up to 79 miles per hour, topping hurricane force levels and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes in the Washington area.

Bands of rain lashed the city and winds toppled power lines and littered the streets with tree limbs as the fast-moving storm, which started in the Midwest after a day of severe heat, reached Washington and its suburbs late in the evening.

WTOP radio said more than 800,000 people in the Washington area were without power.

The Washington Post said it had reports of winds gusting up to 79 miles per hour in Reston, Virginia.

There were power outages in several Washington Metro stations, the Post said, after a day of extreme heat across the southern and eastern United States.

A flash flood warning was issued in Fredrick County, Maryland, until 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, and severe storm warnings were issued in areas between Washington and the Chesapeake Bay to the east.

WUSA television in Washington said "thousands of trees" and tree branches were likely downed by the storm.

Just a dry run for when Barry is reelected and takes away their power permanently. They need to stock up on candles and firewood.

I live about 30 miles North of DC and my power went out for about a minute giving me a scare.

With temperatures near 100 today (FRiday) and the next few days, and very humid too, having no power would be hell.

Not a divine warning? 79 mph is three miles per hour faster than the mark defining it as hurricane-force gusts (Category 1). Downbursts have winds that speed and faster; those are scary.

Since the powers in DC would like to shut down most of our power and live off of our wealth..it doesn’t bother me a bit to see them suffer. Like a lot of banana republic countries..DC has become the place where all the decisions are made corruption is arranged and the parasites hang out.

As far as I’m concerned the whole damned placed can be washed away as long all the criminal politicians and judges drown in the process.

We had a similar storm Monday .... power out two days. We got the one tonight, but it was nothing like Monday when the tops of 3 of our maple trees were broken off, several cedars down, branches & debris everywhere. We were to the south of the worst part of this latest storm - got some winds, heavy rain, lots of lightning, but nothing like Monday’s derecho.

Excuse me, but a lot of decent, normal people, including a lot of good military personnel and patriotic Freepers, live in the DC area.

I’m a hundred miles north of DC and on the edge of the storm line which passed through between 10 and 11 pm.

Vivid lightning, heavy downpours, but little wind.

The storms are all to the south now but just past midnight there was a massive rumble of thunder.

Being without power for a minute gave you a scare? What are you going to do when SHTF and there’s no power at all?

I haven’t had power for a few hours now, but that’s okay. Just reading and sometimes Freeping by candlelight. The upstairs zone of my air-conditioning system has been pretty expensively broken for the past few years so I never use the air, and while today was no fun, it wasn’t hell.

Everybody has snarky things to say about preppers, but when there’s a problem we’re perfectly happy.

Here's a shot of it about 1/2 hour after it passed through my area to the south.

I hope they are not late printing the welfare checks. Riots would most certainly ensue.

I’m in northwestern North Carolina. No storm here but we did get a bizarre blast of sustained high winds for a good ten or fifteen minutes, it was like a shockwave or something, just boom, trees swaying wildly. Not even any rain.
