Heat Wave to Test Power Grid As Utility Threatens Strike
NBC New York, Associated Press ^ | June 30, 2012

Posted on 06/30/2012 2:34:00 PM PDT by Inspectorette

Con Edison has authorized a strike if necessary; its contract expires at midnight Saturday.

The second heat wave of the summer will again test the power grid in our area just as a deadline comes for a possible Con Edison strike. Temperatures reached 98 degrees at LaGuardia Airport Friday, while Newark, N.J. saw 97 and Central Park hit 93.

A mix of sun and clouds continues Saturday and temperatures will linger in the muggy low- to mid-90s. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon.

Con Edison and its workers are in the middle of contract negotiations, with the current contract for Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America expiring at midnight Saturday. John Melia, a spokesman for the union that represents about 8,500 workers, said there are issues over pensions. He said members in May authorized a strike if necessary.

Con Ed said it looked forward to "productive discussions with the union leadership on a new contract that's fair and equitable for our employees and customers."

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the city during the daytime hours Friday and Saturday. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous activity and make sure to check on pets and elderly neighbors. Those who have to work outside are advised to schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas.

Cooling Centers are open Friday and Saturday. For locations, hours, and more information on avoiding heat illness and the Air Quality Index, click here or call 311.

The steambath continues Sunday and Monday, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 90s. Temperatures blazed across the metropolitan area last week, sending children to sprinklers as authorities urged people working outdoors to drink plenty of water and stay in the shade.

The sweltering weather was also blamed for the death of an 81-year-old man. The official cause of death for the unidentified Queens man was "hyperthermia due to environmental exposure with underlying conditions."

it would quickly rid the idiots of their total union worship.

East Coasters will blame the rich and the evil corporations as sure as the sun rises in the East.

Our president has such poor leadership skills that he can’t even get a handle on the egos and infighting within his staff. Heck, he’s losing long traditional allies. (I wonder if Poland is accepting our phone calls yet.)

You forgot the Pikas man...I mean, at least remember the Pikas.

On a less serious note: “Let no crisis go to waste”.

It appears, amplification of any and all crises is now the norm.

Point in case: Western wildfires are not “epic”, as has been touted; however, they are trying real hard to get them to epic levels:

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/06/30/in-colorado-wildfires-worst-in-state-history-why-wont-the-forest-service-use-the-biggest-firefighting-tool-available/

How is it that a 747 supertanker is not enlisted in the fight against these forest fires?

I repeat: “Let no crisis go to waste”!

I belonged to the IAM-AW for 16 years - no choice, it was an agency shop. Our local union officers and stewards were pretty good guys who worked alongside us, but they had absolutely no clout with the union bigwigs. We constantly got sold out at the national level.

Imagine this: the international president of the IAM-AW, the long-since deceased (and not necessarily lamented) William (Wimpy) Winpisinger placed the name of Jesse Jackson into nomination for the presidency at the 1988 Democratic National Convention.

Legally, each member of the union who obeyed the strike action could be held liable for MURDER for anyone who died of a heat related occurrence directly due to the strike.

Furthermore, the Union could be sued right out of existence.

Evergreen Aviation, based out here in McMinnville, Oregon, has such a supertanker. I don't know why it isn't being used in the Colorado fires.

The link illuminates the situation. Evergreen isn’t a small business and doesn’t qualify for monies from the government.

As posted, “Let no crisis go to waste”...how convenient.

My segue back into the original topic of this thread is that unions want to be government...ergo, communism and they will be dishonorable in the way they conduct themselves, and again, they will not waste this energy crisis when it’s exploitable.

Please, please, please let them strike. That would destroy them in the court of public opinion.

Indeed, let their Liberal comrades on the Eastern Seaboard sing "the union label" jingle when they shop to re-stock their fridges/freezers of all the spoiled foods.

I watched the video of that plane. The USFS is at minimum criminally negligent IMO.

It’s an AZ plane so of course it won’t be used. Bastards. Eventually they will be held responsible for their crap. Karma is a real bitch.

unions want to be government.

Surprise!

Unions ARE government.

Nameless, faceless unelected bureaucrats, making thousands of decisions that affect all Americans...and they can't be fired.

Many if not most of them have six-figure incomes and a benefits package three times that amount...and that is at the state level, even in a poor state.

Additionally they are an automatic free campaign force for RATs as they get paid time off to help out during election season. Not only are you, as a taxpayer, paying them to work for RATs, they also contribute campaign money solely to RATs.

What do the RATs do in return? Why they make sure the unions are protected from Republicans and that the budget (union salaries and benefits) grows by a couple of percent each budget cycle.

(See Wisconsin)

“Eventually they will be held responsible for their crap.”

If the affected individuals know this, then hopefully, they should sue the fed for negligence.

Time to inform some more elected officials of this.

Evergreen Aviation is actually based in McMinnville, Oregon. The Evergreen Aviation Museum is the home of the Spruce Goose. Fascinating place to visit, not far from Portland on the way to the Oregon Coast. However, its CEO, Del Smith, is a Republican...
