Iranian lawmakers have drafted a bill that would close the Strait of Hormuz for oil tankers heading to countries supporting current economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

"There is a bill prepared in the National Security and Foreign Policy committee of Parliament that stresses the blocking of oil tanker traffic carrying oil to countries that have sanctioned Iran," Iranian MP Ibrahim Agha-Mohammadi told reporters.

"This bill has been developed as an answer to the European Union's oil sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran."

If they’re anything like our congress...what they say and what they do are two very different things.

The US Navy might have other ideas. Now whether or not their CiC shares them, is another issue entirely.

Is it time for Iran to become a glass surfaced parking lot?

They tried it back in the eighties and thats how the US Navy came to have the rather prominent role it now has in the Gulf.

If they do it this time, we’d probably have to take our their shore missile batteries which means war.

Actually, if “we” decide to close the straits to Iranian traffic, we can probably bring down the regime. Thats our “nuclear” option. They depend on exporting oil for their national income, and they import almost all of their gasoline. Close the straits and make it stick and its the equivalent of putting your foot on their carotid artery.

We could close it to them while keeping it open to everyone else. Oil prices would skyrocket but they wouldn’t see a dime of it.

In any case, if they move to close the straits, or even if we do, its war. Game on. We’d better be prepared to go all the way.

Hit all their refining and refined storage capacity on day 1. Problem solved, the government will collapse in two weeks.

However I see that we did allow a waiver for China to buy gas from Iran today.

Like I said; it’s not the Navy’s abilities I question, just the will of their CiC.

Damn rat bastard that he is.

I remember the naval engagement with Iran in 1988. Operation Praying Mantis.

On 14 April 1988 USS Samuel B. Roberts was heavily damaged when it struck an Iranian mine.

President Reagan ordered US naval forces to respond.

On 18 April 1988 the USN sunk the frigate IS Sahand, heavily damaged the frigate IS Sabalan, sunk the gunboat IS Joshan and sunk 3 Iranian speedboats.

Used to be only around 20% of their requirement. Has gotten better over the past decade, but definitely a soft spot that would be easy to exploit.

We’d better be prepared to go all the way.

We haven't done that since 1945. And it won't happen here.
