West: Forget fireworks, let's mandate firearms
Times 24/7 ^ | July 3, 2012 | Becket Adams

While speaking at a campaign rally in Florida, Rep. Allen West (R-FL) mocked politicians who use taxation as a means of regulating behavior (the most recent example being the tax [not a penalty] on Americans who don’t want to participate in “Obamacare”).

“What will be next? If you don’t buy a certain type of green car, they will tax you. If you don’t buy a certain type of food, they will tax you,” Rep. West said.

“Well, I got a great idea: I believe for personal security, every American should have to go out and buy a Glock 9mm. And if you don’t do it, we’ll tax you. Now, I wonder how the liberals will feel about that one,” he added.

One difference in being forced to buy Glocks vs ObamaCare: Glocks are proven as one of the best of their kind while ObamaCare is going to be like a Govt Motors car: the Chevy Volt - overpriced, no one wants it, and it self-destructs...

As a Constitutional power to equip, organize, and direct the militia - that being all reasonably expected to act in defense of self and country - that is indeed a proper requirement, as those who wrote the Constitution & 2nd Amendment enacted exactly such a requirement. See the Militia Act of 1792.

I don't know about Allen West, but the thought of a bunch of metro-sexual liberals, with all of their hyper-emotionalism and hysteria, walking around armed doesn't exactly give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I realize the analogy and it's purpose, but still, does anyone really want the denizens of OWS carrying firearms???

Yep, everyone should be required to have an AR-15 and a 9mm sidearm.

Yeah, the “Glock” reference was a mistake.
He should require the firearm to be from an American company.

The spineless weasels who support Obozo and his domestic and world socialism plan wouldn’t know how to use a firearm.

They’d shoot their eye out!

Kennesaw mandated a firearm for every household, and crime promptly (almost instantly) dropped by more than 85%.

The proggies usually don’t want anyone to mention Kennesaw.

Yep, everyone should be required to have an AR-15 and a 9mm or higher caliber sidearm.

I'll take my .40S&W over a 9mm every day of the week.

Quite the contrary, I think it would be a good thing to arm Liberals. I am very close with numerous ultra-left-wing, European-style socialist liberals who are proud gun owners and espouse their American freedom to keep and bear arms as the best of the bunch. They, like most conservatives, are responsible gun owners who enjoy everything about America except when a Republican is elected.

“Metro-sexuals” might bring a certain flair to the bearing of arms. Perhaps a market for “fashionable” concealed carry rigs would burgeon. Can you imagine Giorgio Armani or Prada making S&W j-frame IWB holsters? I wouldn’t buy em, but the metros might.

All of that aside, it’s been my experience that introducing firearms to a person changes something about them. Provided they’re not psychotic or sociopaths, oftentimes those first few shots down range awaken something inside a person. That feeling of power and control is addicting. People want more, and with that power, they realize there’s a great responsibility upon them to ensure that the firearm is well-cared-for and safely stored.

I think the mandating of firearm ownership is a great idea. I used to joke that there should be a law that says along with a social security number, every baby born in the country is provided a firearm, obviously to be handled and stored by the parents, and when that child reaches the appropriate age to utilize that firearm, the parents are to allow that child/young adult to practice with it at a local range. Can you imagine the generations of responsible citizens we might raise?

Sure you’re going to hear of incidents where children are shot and potentially killed due to misuse or mishandling, but if the Liberals can mandate the purchase of a service that would eventually mean having to apply to a lottery for heart surgery, I don’t see a difference in providing firearms to the nation at large. Heck, the Liberals should pile on! It would mean more gun-related deaths, but that would mean fewer people needing healthcare through the span of their lives. It’s a win-win!

"Yeah, the “Glock” reference was a mistake."

Agree -- Colt, Bushmaster, S&W, Mossberg, Ruger etc etc ... what's wrong with a fine 'merkun firearm, designed and made right here in the U.S.A.???

I believe for personal security, every American should have to go out and buy a Glock 9mm personal defense firearm of their choice. If you can't afford one it will be issued to you, and you may choose to pay for it over several years by providing a public service.

Maybe similar to the Swiss? Have every American citizen owning at least one true assault rifle (fully automatic), do a two year stint in the military, and have a weekend each year for the whole nation to go to their local ranges and get reacquainted with their firearm.

Exactly! If a zombie hopped up on bath salts is coming at you, do you want to drill holes right through, or do you want blow its skull asunder and drop it?
