Elton John to be honoured for fight against Communism

Sir Elton John will be honoured with a Medal of Gratitude from Poland for his contribution to bringing down the Communist regime, it has emerged...

He will be presented with the medal by former president and trade union leader Lech Walesa, whom he visited in 1984.

The singer is believed to have shared a “morale-boosting” bottle of champagne in Mr Walesa’s flat, with Sir Elton opening praising his union Solidarity during a show.

Magdalena Charkin-Jaszcza, of the European Solidarity Centre (ESC) in Gdansk, told a newspaper Sir Elton gave Polish people help in a difficult time....

“Elton John came here and gave us the support we needed when we were living in a police state where people were getting beaten up and killed like in George Orwell’s 1984.”

Sir Elton travelled to Poland for a concert in 1984, when Communist army chief General Jaruzelski was ruling. A protest movement was led by trade union Solidarity, which was founded in 1980.

Fight against communism? I could have sworn he was one of uncle obies buddies (butties?) which sounds to me like supporting communism. Must be a British thing. Very strange.

I wasn’t there but if the Poles are happy with his contribution, that’s good enough for me. Maybe he’d like to help free the US from communists now.

Thankfully Elton has been apolitical for the most part.

He has also had shows for Bush, and private parties with Rush Limbaugh.

I think he is one of the greatest song writers ever.

Right. Now bring down the Democrats and place Obomber in a dungeon. And twenty years hard labor for the administration, and impeachment for the SC.

Interesting the contrast: If one traveled to South Africa during the last days of White Rule, then one was supporting an illegitimate regime. Here we have Lech Walesa lauding an entertainer who traveled to Poland during the last days of the Communist era and somehow that entertainer WAS NOT supporting the illegitimate regime?

Having a hard time getting my mind around that one!

That said, Elton John is a confused bundle of wants & desires. I don’t think he’s some kind of political deep-thinker who weighed the morality of traveling to Poland at that particular moment in history.

This award probably says that “Lech Walesa is a Fan” and little more.

Yeah, I think he played for Rush’s wedding or something. But, you can bet that capitalism was in play BIG time. LOL!

Must have been that time he got drunk in Warsaw and shouted, “who do you have to _ _ _ _ to end Communism around here?!?”

Thanks Cincinatus’ Wife.

You’ve gotta get in the time machine and go back and realize that 90% of artists at the time would have been holding concerts for the other side.

I agree. He is a gifted entertainer, seems to be somewhat careful about his politcal affiliations and endorsements in general.

The irony is Poles are some of the fiercest fighters for freedom (1683, Pulaski) and yet they have enjoyed so little of it themselves over the centuries

In the 80s, it was COOL to be pro-Solidarity (and Elton had a new market!). Oh, how those times have changed.

I know he’s friends w/Rush, but George Bush? He used to trash and mock George Bush (43?)a lot! Now maybe it was his Dad that E. John gave shows for? I do know that shortly before the end of GWB’s second term, he (Elton John)came to the WH for a medal of some sort. I’ve noticed since then, he’s been really quiet about GWB; he hasn’t said anything ugly about him as far as I know.

But that’s really amazing about him helping Poland bring down communism! Good for him!
