FOX 2's Charlie LeDuff takes on an epic challenge of golfing his way from 8 Mile Road to Belle Isle... literally. It's a par 3,168, 18-mile, single hole course.
The 46-year-old Pulitzer Prize winning writer carries only four clubs in his bag while facing extraordinary hazards that took years to form. He strokes his way through grassy fields, abandoned houses and crumbling landmarks. The half-way houses on this course are real.

Saw that earlier in the day, glad you posted it.
Funny / sad / pathetic
Great Society was a huge success.
Half-way houses? Half-way to where?
There is so much empty and abandoned space in Detroit that the entire city of Paris can fit inside.
Look at this satellite photo.
“It’s really sad what has happened to this once great city.”
It’s also sad that most Americans do not see the role of unchecked Democratic leadership and heavy unionization across many areas played in the city’s current state.
Windsor, ON has had a socialist government for 50 years. Portland, OR has been run by Dems forever, likewise Seattle.
Are you sure that the problem is Democrats?
That’s madness. Funny and tragic at the same time. Kudos.
You might have a point. You might even be about to say where you’re headed with that comment. In fact you might say something to the effect that, for example, Sweden has been ruled by socialists for many years and yet it doesn’t look anything at all like Detroit.
Toss in one major industry run by the unions and you got yourself Detroit.

The problem is that as the industrial midwest lost some business, the proper course of action would have been to downsize government and government expenditures as the tax base weakened. Instead, because those Democrats were beholden to public employee unions and the poor, they treated their city payrolls like jobs programs, and the tax base as something to be milked rather than rebuilt. Over time, that chased out much of what remained of the tax base. It's "sooner or later you run out of other people's money" writ small.
Republican mayors would have been more willing to cut city employment and services, cut taxes, and encouraged business to stay.
Other issue was schools. Democrats politically invested in busing, integration, and using the schools for social change led to white flight, which also helped damage those cities.
Republicans are just as capable of poor management as Democrats, but at least they don't have the bias of elevated the welfare of public employee unions above and the poor above everyone else.
What amazes me is how there are libraries full of books, police stations full of files and mugshots, medical offices full of supplies and equipment all of it abandoned like you are looking at a scene in the Omega Man or some Zombie Appocalypse.
The state would like to take control of Belle Isle and the locals are throwing a tantrum about it. I’m not sure I want the state to take control but the city simply can’t afford upkeep.
Its called “Detroitification” ...the physical manifestation of the ultimate in Leftard thinking and behavior.
Toss in a City Council like this and you got yourself a Detroit!
I plead guilty to being ignorant as to who this McDuff fellow is. Am I missing out on something good?
Charlie LeDuff hammers the Conyers clan all the time.
Its crazy. There are people offering to fix city vehicles for free, The Red Wings are willing to buy in car computers for police and the city doesn’t respond.
In other words, the council members are all a bunch of homeys who hate crackez’, right?
It wasn’t the policies that sunk Detroit, it was just that the policies were not implemented correctly. Yeah, that’s it.
You could have done that 20 years ago, you just would have needed a bag of balls and five extra sets of clubs.
Welcome to BRA.
My eyes opened after I was stationed in the DC area and I spent several years watching the local and national events and happenings.
LOL these racist clowns. I would argue that the white devils who have the money should not be treated with disdain but these are close-minded blacks.
Thank you cripplecreek.
I think I like Charlie McDuff.
Canada's Liverpool. T***y bars and talentless garage bands. And a couple of decent Viet restaurants...
No after school activities cause once the bus left the school, there was no way to get home unless your parents had 2 cars so a parent could pick you up and sometimes with traffic, the ride could take 45 min. to an hour. Back in those days very few people owned 2 cars....most women stayed home to raise the family....by the 70's women went to work usually just to make enough money to pay all the taxes....
The High Schools were all ready integrated...grades 1-6 was within walking distance from your home, grades 7-9 covered a larger area and variety of students...I went to pershing high school, took a regular bus with a discount card as a student, the ROTC when I was in high school actually brought their guns to school one day a week for practice.
“In other words, the council members are all a bunch of homeys who hate crackez, right?”
Actually, No. It’s just that they seem to be incapable of running a city. We have the same problem here in Oakland, CA. The nature of their being wedded to Socialism/Marxism destines them to failure. Their dependency on government solutions and their unwillingness to make hard choices doom them to failure. That plus a few of them going to jail for corruption.
Hard to believe that Detroit at one time was the biggest “middle class” city in the US - bigger than NY, Chicago, LA, Philadelphia, etc. The middle class simply got laid off/left. This is what remains. You don’t hear “hollowed out” in business speak much anymore, but Detroit is basically a “hollowed out” city.
Detroit currently has the highest percentage of blacks of any large city in the nation at 84 percent.
My daughter had a big dollar job offer to work there in the auto industry but turned it down after visiting. Her exact words were “It’s like a war zone. There was razor wire all around the buildings and parking lot. They told me not to walk outside the wire for any reason. I can’t live like that.”
“hate to inform you all but the biggest role in Detroit’s downhill slide was forced busing and no one except me ever mentions it”
That “Socialist/Marxist/Demorat Program” did damage throughout the country. And now we get to see the “final solution” in places like Detroit, Washington DC, you pick the city. People with the economic ability to move away from this crap did as fast as they could as you pointed out. The idea that you could force people of different ethnic and more importantly economic circumstances to “integrate” in this fashion was a loony idea from the get-go. It dragged everyone down to the lowest common denominator. The bums won, but it looks like they got the booby prize.
“Portland, OR has been run by Dems forever, likewise Seattle.”
And you think these two cities are proof that the RATS can run a city?
“Republican mayors would have been more willing to cut city employment and services, cut taxes, and encouraged business to stay.”
The last Republican Mayor of Detroit left office in January of 1962. After a couple of white RAT mayors, they elected Coleman Young who was there for twenty years. He is mostly responsible for what has happened there, at least from the standpoint of the kind of government that has been practiced.
Yes, it was the democrats.
I just realized why the muzzies like it up there so much.
It reminds them of home.
wonder how many balls lost
I can still remember going to visit my grandma in the city... riding the busses to the stores, walking to the corner for ice cream ( that was so long ago that baskin robbins only had 1 flavor :)).....
So sad to see the deterioration....
I guess we can give a big thank you to soulman young...
He is a plagiarist. I don’t really care for him but this segment is great!
“hate to inform you all but the biggest role in Detroits downhill slide was forced busing and no one except me ever mentions it...”
Forced busing happened in other cities and the down hill slide was no where near as precipitous. So, it may have contributed, but I don’t think it was the biggest factor. Just a factor.
The state and city should declare a tax free industrial zone in some of the run down area. Give a specific time line so that manufacturers know when the tax free status ends. See if it encourages some return of manufacturing.
I also put the blame on Mayor Colman Young. It became apparent to me, shortly after he was elected, that he was a racist who hated white people. When you are not wanted in a city, there is little reason to stick around.
I think Coleman Young was mayor for about 20 years...He told the criminals to take their business North of 8 mile road...He sure hated whites. For those that don’t know Detroit, 8 mile is its northern border...
“I also put the blame on Mayor Colman Young. It became apparent to me, shortly after he was elected, that he was a racist who hated white people. When you are not wanted in a city, there is little reason to stick around.”
I’ve read that opinion before.
He was way ahead of his time. A pioneer. It seems all Democrats hate white people now.
