A plan that offers Obama a fighting chance
The Washington Post ^ | July 5, 2012 | Jonathan Rauch

Posted on 07/06/2012 2:40:30 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

At this point in 1980, Jimmy Carter was on the path to oblivion but didn’t know it. Barack Obama may share Carter’s fate if he doesn’t change course soon.

The 1980 presidential race was neck and neck until the end. It finally broke for Ronald Reagan when voters concluded that Carter could not cope with the economy and that Reagan, despite his conspicuous flaws as a candidate, was a viable alternative.............

This election will be decided largely by independent voters, most of whom can probably tell you that Mitt Romney’s economic plan is to repeal Obamacare and shrink the government. It may not make much sense, but it’s clear. Ask what Obama’s plan is, and they won’t be certain. They will know, however, that what he has done hasn’t worked. And by the fall, many independents will have made up their minds.

The president’s failure, so far, to show that he understands the scope of the economy’s problems and knows how to fix them does not stem from having nothing to say: investment in education, energy, innovation and infrastructure are reasonable things. But they are also slow-acting, small-bore stuff. Such talk does not include additional economic stimulus, an element that many economists, especially Democratic-leaning ones, consider crucial to prevent a double-dip recession. Nor does it deal realistically with long-term growth in spending.

So Obama should draw a map and send it to Capitol Hill in the form of a bill — a president’s strongest statement that he intends action. A big legislative proposal can frame the issue and paint Obama’s intentions in bold colors. It should include three elements:..........

All the polls, all the numbers compared to past elections means little when you sit in the Whitehouse with agents placed all through the highest cabinets.

Can Obama win the election?

What election.

Postponed due to an act of aggression by Iran comes to mind, an assination attempt, or rather several upon key electors, a manufactured right wing coup also comes to mind.

It would be far better for the country to just perform a popular vote ahead of the traditional election, dump the GOP planned chain of events, make an unexpected moved, even an illogical move.

As I recall it, it was the embassy debacle in Iran that did it.

"As I recall it, it was the embassy debacle in Iran that did it."

It was a combination of the economy, JIMMAS ineptness, and the embassy debacle.
The polls were very similar to today. I didn't believe them then and I don't believe them NOW.

There is a a big difference between Carter and Obama. One was a simple minded fool - the other is a wannabe despot.

People who keep thinking that Obama is "bothered" by our crumbling economy are deluded. Obama and his cabal are determined to bring the American people to their knees if only to show fealty to the federal govt.

They have been managing the decline. Allowing it to go into free fall won't happen unless the bastard is re-elected. Then the communists in the WH will take over. He will get to appoint more SC justices and the nation, as we grew up in, will be over.

I suspect you are right - but you know the media . . . . they just love to re-write history in a way that makes the Dem look like the innocent victim of circumstances beyond their control. Let’s not remind people that Carter was a dismal failure with not just the economy but in terms of making America into a weak-kneed laughing stock worldwide. I’m sure the media doesn’t want the voters to draw any parallels between weak-kneed Carter and the current bowing-scraping, America hating occupant of the White House.

More Democrats bail on Obama’s convention and refuse to endorse him........."It’s tougher to sell the “too busy campaigning to waste time at the convention” excuse when you’re talking about candidates in the very state where the convention is being held. In fact, Kissell represents the 8th Congressional District, where Charlotte is located. Furthermore, a busy schedule of campaign activities doesn’t explain why these folks refuse to endorse Obama for re-election."....

That is the way to get some insight into how truly unpopular Obama is, rather than a bunch of ginned up polls. Look at all the areas where sitting Dems do not want him to appear with him, and will not be seen anywhere near him.

No, the embassy seizure happened more than a year before the 1980 election. Carter always blamed Ted Kennedy for challenging him for the Dem nomination, despite the fact that Ted flopped.

Very true. Just as James Carville kept Clinton on message with, “The economy, stupid” in 1992. Even Obama’s “Hope and Change” was effective with a US public tired of eight years of declining personal income and perpetual war under George W. Bush.

A singular message, targeted directly at the opponent’s key weakness, and repeated ad nauseam can be highly effective in a political campaign. Does anyone know what Romney’s theme (core message) is?

First off, just what will be the ultimate outcome of supporting a socialist utopia in America, to what purpose will it make a better life for everyone, by making everyone exactly equal?

By killing anyone who dares to be better, smarter, more affluent?

The WP is rewriting history. People didn’t all of a sudden go against Carter in 1980, but the polls did. The mediots hated Reagan and they did everything they could for Carter, including skewing polls in order to show the common man how his friends were voting.

"Does anyone know what Romney’s theme (core message) is?"

I don't have a clue.
I am not on fire for Romney, as my tag line states I am on fire to get rid of the Kenyan. I have had this tag line since way before Mittens backed into the nomination.
I didn't care for any of our choices with the possible exception of Herman Cain. I didn't really know much about him, I liked his seemingly straight forward of telling it like it is.
He wimped out in my humble opinion. Yes the allegations were severe, however you must have thick skin to run a successful campaign.

Anyone that still supports Obama at this point, after all we now know about him and what he has done and is trying to do as president, should openly be called a traitor to the United States. They can no longer be excused as ignorant. That’s assuming they’re competent enough to understand the most basic of facts.

>Carter always blamed Ted Kennedy for challenging him for the Dem nomination, despite the fact that Ted flopped.

I really started to wake up then to the fact that the news was feeding us unadulterated garbage.
A sitting President defeated a KENNEDY back when that name still had a magic, larger than life aura about it and still went down in flames to a candidate described by the media as a silly cowboy actor.

I also noted that Ted did NOT take that defeat gracefully at all.

>the embassy seizure happened more than a year before the 1980 election.

Yes, but that is the point - a major unresolved crisis vs a 3rd world country that could not be handled in over a years time smacks of impotence.
I remember reading that Carter wrote that his election went down with those helicopters in the Iranian desert.
Pointed a lot of fingers, he did.

It was both. Consider that the hostage standoff lasted 444 days, so it was an issue long before the election. Here again the author relies on conventional wisdom. The press tried to carry Carter across the finish line by their slanted polls using anyone except likely or even registered voters to make people think they were not with the prevailing wisdom.

It was only in the last month that they began to use more credible techniques to attain any kind of credibility at all.

Today we are seeing the same thing, especially with Gallup. The poll released yesterday about the unpopularity of ObamaTax had to use just adults, not registered or likely voters, to get a result that showed the Democrats favored it when Republicans and Independents did not. Even then, the raw percentages were heavily in the favor of those who did not. They also did this same stunt when publishing the latest polls for President in the swing states with the same results.

I agree with you Obama needs to be retired and while Romney is not a conservative he is almost certainly better than four more years of the current policies. My concern is getting a Republican candidate who seems to have no core beliefs, and no theme elected.

We’ve been down this road with McCain and Dole. Neither could define why they were a better candidate than the opponent. If Romney doesn’t define himself clearly, and develop a winning theme, Obama will define Romney for the voters and the picture won’t be pretty.

People are much more motivated when they are voting “for” something than against something. The best situation is when they are presented with a situation where they want to vote against one candidate and have very positive reasons to vote for his opponent. The Republican practice of presenting candidates to the public and saying, “Vote for us because our guy isn’t as bad as the Democrat”, is not inspirational.

It is Romney’s job to clearly define himself as the better choice and give people a reason to vote “for” him. If he can’t define himself clearly he will lose.

obama will probably win (if we do not get a miracle) and mitt romney will be the only reason. His big money donors are all complaining that he is a man that has no ideas... no specific plans to deal with anything. He is all glitz and show and no processing power. He can't just reach down within himself and come up with Conservative solutions to the problems and dangers we are living with... there is nothing there but a ted kennedy playbook... when he does reach deep within himself. His handlers are second rate blabbermouths that keep screwing up and making statements as if mitt were still governor of the most liberal state in the Union.

Ridiculous.

There are fifty separate and distinct proceedings in November, whereby electors are chosen through methods determined - solely - by State Legislatures (I don't know by whose authority the 3 DC electors are chosen - probably the DNC). There is no "election" to cancel.

I’ll tell you what his theme should be: Unleash America’s Greatness.

He should base his campaign around the idea that American Exceptionalism is being purposefully restrained by the current Administration and he views his job to be freeing the giant and getting out of its way.

Govt regulation is tying down America’s traditional engine of economic growth. We have a history of powering the world’s economy. This Administration won’t even let us power our own.

America built the premiere health care system of the world. It educates most of the worlds doctors and provides most of the innovations. Instead of killing the golden goose with Obamatax, would should unleash the greatness of America’s heath care system.

The federal model was ingenious. Mitty should quote Franklin, if you can keep it. Say his job IS to empower our Republic and its federal model. States should lead the way. (A federalist campaign against statism is really his only defense against Romneytax.) Unleash the federal model that made America great.

He should say that Obama wants to move ‘forward’ with burdens that bind what makes us great. Romney wants to unleash America from the very restraints by which this Administration has tied down our greatness. Move forward with the failure and economic decline of the last four years? NEVER. Instead America needs to be unleashed from the last four years.

But then, I’m passionate about America. I have yet to see the same in the etch a sketch campaign...

If Obama ever drew a map of exactly where he wanted to take the country, he’d be buried in a landslide. Remember what happened to George McGovern (who ran as an unabashed liberal) and Walter Mondale (who merely reported his desire to raise taxes).

Romney’s message is “Believe in America”, and his sub-theme is “Obama’s not working.”

Does it sound like “Hope and Change”?

Yes it does. Do I believe it’s a great slogan? No. But I thought Hope and Change was ridiculous. McCain never found a slogan that he could stick with for more than two weeks.

“Forward” is a joke.

Romney will win in November because he will raise enough money to counter the Obama negative campaign.

The article is here on FR and they are griping about much more than that. He has no economic plan... he has no health plan to talk about other than his original version of obamacare... he is running on the reality that obama is the worst president ever... and that is true... but then mitt offers no reason as to why he is better and every day a new flip flop hits the media. It was a tax before it wasn't a tax and then it was a tax on July 2 but then on July 4... it wasn't a tax again. He was for abortion before he was against it. He was for gun control before he wasn't for it. He was never part of the Reagan Revolution... he didn't like it or the man... but now he does etc etc etc. He is becoming the joke that kerry was.
