I can't believe this. Obama is NOT winning a single group he lost in 2008 and he is NOT doing better with any group (not even Blacks)that he won last time. I guess Rasmussen must be talking to Martians.

Only 6% undecided. That’s encouraging.

i believe it....Romney fights in dribs and drabs- he doesn’t bludgeon obama over the head on a daily basis the way it should be done...

i’ve given Romney credit for fighting back somewhat versus the bend over and take it strategy of mclame four years ago, but thus far Romney has been timid fighting against the four year failure that is his opponent...

Romney best start making his case soon....people do not want obama...

Romney’s not a much of a candidate, but it’s amazing Obama still has so much support. Look at the mess this country is in.

Obama is a cult messiah figure for a very large amount of people in this country.

We are essentially living in a cult of personality and too few are willing to admit it.

Pretty much the high water mark for Hussein and the kiss of death.

“...Mitt Romney attracting 46% of the vote, while President Obama earns 44%.”

I simply do not trust polls, but if those numbers are anywhere near the truth, I can’t see Romney winning.

If Romney doesn’t catch fire very soon, present new and bold ideas, and go after Obama, he is wasting everybody’s time.

Romney needs the votes of folks that can’t stand him (I am one of those), yet he seemingly refuses to give folks a reason to consider him. There is no vision, there is no excitement and there is no clear plan. Simply saying that he is going to fix sh!t just isn’t enough.

I hate Obama’s guts with everything I have within me. I truly believe that if Obama wins another 4 years, he and the dems will finish us off... but Romney shouldn’t count on that sentiment as being enough. He actually has to work at winning it.

To me, it seems as if Romney is simply running out the clock... I do not believe that will work against Obama.

I would have voted for Newt.

Folks need to settle down.

Romney will win, and he’ll win with the boring campaign he’s running... why?

SIMPLE

This election isn’t about ROMNEY, its about OBAMA.. this election is a referendum on OBAMA, and when you dig into the numbers he’s got zero chance of winning re-election.

Obama is viewed as extreme by 47% of the electorate vs 31% viewing Romney as extreme.. that right there tells you that Romney is going to win and win big.

Obamas only prayer at re-election was to paint his oponent as extreme and scaryier than 4 more years of him will be, and its just not happening nor will it happen.

He can’t top 42-43% of the vote if he handles everything perfectly.

I know we all want to see the republic tear Obama apart and have a strong ideological debate, but Romney isn’t going to do that, he’s just going to run a quiet safe campaign, and watch Obama continue to hang himself.

Romney doesn’t have to “catch fire”... the fire that’s burning is the revulsion with Obama, and its burning brigheter every day. Most folks who are going to vote for Romney aren’t going to do it because they are on fire for the guy, they are going to do it because he’s not Obama. Just like Obama won because most of the folks (with the exceptiosn of blacks and guilty white liberals) voted for him because they were on fire against Bush.

We are looking at a real possibility of a McGovern type election folks where the democrat won’t even pull 40% of the vote.

I would have prefered Newt personally as well because I know he would have take the ideological battle to Obama.. but that’s not what we got.

And yes Romney certainly can run out the clock on Obama, and even with that boring strategy he’ll win by 12-15 points or more.

I believe you are correct. Romney is following the same strategy that worked well for him during the primaries.

He’ll bait Obama into wasting all his ammunition too early and will then proceed to unleash a massive attack from multiple fronts in the weeks leading up to the vote.

An ideological battle at this point would be a diversion. It’s much better to let the bad economic news dominate the headlines. They are essentially free attack ads against Obama.

Watch the Rasmussen poll over the next 3 days because Romney will be racking up additional points onto his lead. Why? The very bad employment numbers will begin to resonate with more and more people. Sometimes it just takes awhile for the memo to get around to everyone. At the end of July will come the 2nd quarter GDP Report and Obama will take another leg down. This is going to be fun.

Remember, when Romney comes off of vacation, Obama goes on vacation. That’s when the gloves come off. A President during the worst depression since 1929 is chilling out at the Vineyard while people are starving and unemployed.

Makes for a good backdrop for the fall.

I think you have nailed Mitt’s game plan. He will unleash a massive attack using Hussein’s own words during September and October much in the way he blew Newt out of the water in the Florida primary.

The Rat talking points (off-shore accounts, job sourcing, Let homes foreclose etc.) will be worn out this Fall and proved to be twisted truth.

The conservative turnout must be stimulated by the right choice Mitten’s makes for his VP. A milk toast candidate will cost Romney dearly. He must select a tea party firebrand that will rock the house!

Hjay is correct romney does not want his campaign to peak too early and the romney people are forcing Obama to spend faster than he can bring money in plus the challenger receives nine or more of the undecided vote on election day

Romney is in very good shape and there are only four more job reports before election day

I firmly believe by October the serious political discussion won’t even be can Obama win, the serious political discussion will be will the Republicans get 60 Senate seats.

Sure the die hard pundits wills till try to spin the election by that point, but they will be just espousing things they know are not true. Obama, Reid and Pelosi have collectively destroyed the democratic party this cycle.. the damage up and down the ticket will be catastrophic for the party.

Keep an eye on the fundamentals, not the headlines:

Obamas cash machine is gone, donors are abandoning him in droves, he’s already told down ticket dems GET BENT, you aren’t getting any money.. Romney, who is hardly a candidate who is exciting anyone is raising more money.

Obama is being abandoned by down ticket dems, they don’t want to be seen or associated with him... That’s a BIG BIG BIG deal for a sitting president. Having a photo op with a sitting president when you are a local politician in his party is HUGE bang for the buck, free press, fund raising etc etc.. and the lower level dems particularly in the non liberal areas are running for cover from the guy.

Obama really believes the public agrees with him ideologically, he is doubling down on radical liberalism. He truly believes he’s losing and in trouble because he and his party are not embracing socialism STRONG ENOUGH! Look at his advice to dems.. Go on offensive over health care! The guy doesn’t live in reality... The most reviled legislation in my lifetime, and he wants everyone to go out and defend it and us it to attack republicans.

Obama is still trying to attack Romney on Jobs creation.. how rediculous.. the last thing this guy should be calling attention to in any form is JOBS.. he is the only president in the modern era who will end his term with fewer people working than the day he took office... Not a fewer percentage, BUT FEWER ACTUAL PEOPLE WORKING! That’s Obama’s legacy... FAILURE.. across the board Failure and even his own people know it, which is why his record is never talked about.

Romney isn’t a shy wall flower, he’s shown he’s a scrapper.. the primaries proved it. Right now he just has to sit tight and keep pounding the economy, by end of summer when it matters, he’ll have a far bigger warchest, Obama will be on the defensive, and will be wasting what little money he has trying to hold onto traditionally liberal states... As long as the economy is where it is, and obamas record is what it is (and neither are going to turn around by November in any significant way) Obama cannot mount any serious offense, every attempt so far at an offense has has sunk like a lead balloon.

All he’s got is staged gigs with friendly crowds, those swing voters that gave him a chance in 08 have abandoned him.. hell even large swaths of democratic voters have abandoned him.

I know 4 months is a long time in poltics, but the fact he hasn’t even been able to take his one accomplishment, Obamacare and get a supreme court win on it, and turn that into anything shows you JUST HOW BAD IT IS FOR HIM!

He should have bounced 5-10 points with the decision last week, he got a dead cat bounce. That’s his one achievement he can point to, and its dispised by voters of both parties! Hell poll just came out saying 20% of DEMOCRATS agree the bill will increase cost, hurt the economy and not improve health care!... 20% of your own party don’t buy what you are selling on your coup de tat??? You are TOAST.

There will be plenty of staged theatrics to make it seem like he’s got support for the cameras, but fact is, he’s toast.

Don’t forget, the USSC decision just reinvigorated the Tea Party, and most of the democratic senators who voted for obamacare HAVE NOT FACED THE VOTERS SINCE PASSING IT!!!! They are going to get slaughtered.

Real question is, not will the Repubicans win the White House, the real question is, will the republicans get a Filabuster proof majority in the Senate. Jan 2013 House, Senate and White House will be in republican hands... then the question will be, will they use it effectively or not.

I'll believe it when I see it reflected in Rasmussen's state polls. At the national level, peoples' preferences count equally. In state polls, peoples' preferences are weighted by their states' Electoral College votes.

As of now, Rasmussen has Obama leading in the Electoral College. He seems to have taken a few weeks off in state polling.

Thank you for your insights--they were very encouraging!

As was the focus group Fox News' Frank Luntz had on the other night, which--almost to a man (and woman!)--reflected a surprising (and very satisfying!) degree of dissatifaction toward the policies of this Administration, especially Obamacare. And--best of all--that focus group included quite a few people who voted for Obama in '08, and said they would NOT vote for him this year.

Romney fights in dribs and drabs

I am seeing this type of comment regularly amongst these threads. I don't follow the main stream media and sporadically listen to talk radio.

Now, Mitt is out every day campaigning as far as I can tell. Are you equating his lack of 'fights' due to his stops not being covered? I mean the media is not going to give him the time of day so how do we know he is fighting or not?

He can issue all the statements he wants, tweets, facebook posts web posts, but if he isn't getting coverage, is that his fault?

I call BS on this poll and all polls about Obama. People answering polls are not going to always admit they don't support Obama, for fear of being accused of being a racist.

In the privacy of the voting booth, the people will rid themselves of this poser, POS. I think the polls will be the farthest off this cycle than any other.

I’d rather see the landslide in both Houses of Congress.

Here's some food for thought...

People here on the Free Republic (myself included) tend to be extremely politically active as well as news junkies and we've been following this presidential election pretty much since the day after the last one ended in November of 2008!

What we lose sight of sometimes is that the vast majority of this country won't be paying attention to this presidential race until the leaves start turning.

So while we hunker down here and rend our clothing over the fact that Romney hasn't "come out swinging", most Americans are headed to the beach or flipping hamburgers in the backyard out on the grill. Even Romney himself is out there jet-skiing on Lake Winnepausakee this week.

Romney could spend a hundred million dollars this month running anti-Obama commercials and nobody but us would bother to see them or comment on them.

Now I'm not saying Romney should be sitting on his hands. Let him have this vacation week. But come Monday, I expect that he will resume campaign-related activities full-blast and that he has a staff that is going to adequately prepare him for the all-out war that will be necessary to unseat Obama.

Obama is weak but a sitting president is never to be taken for granted. Unlike Carter in 1980, Obama has a cultivated a cult of personality that would make Mussolini and Kim II-sung blush, and has a huge block of disciples who will follow him no-matter-what, even if he leads them over a cliff. Think Jim Jones. If he fixes poison Kool-Aid, people will line up to drink it. (Chris Matthews...please back off and give me some room, there's really no Kool-Aid, I'm only trying to make a point here...thank you!)

I also want to talk a little bit about human nature. People do not like to admit being wrong and they especially hate to have it pointed out to them. This not only makes them angry but it usually forces them back to their original position - even though they know it is the wrong position. Yes, many people's egos are such that they would rather entrench themselves in a position they know to be wrong then to be forced to admit that they made a mistake.

There are a lot of people who got snookered by Obama last go-around. Deep down inside, they are hurt and disgusted with themselves. As much as the rest of us are tempted, the worst thing we can do is mock them and say "told you so, told you so." All that will accomplish is to force them into a position of defending Obama (as they will see it as defending their own honor and dignity) when otherwise they may have reluctantly admitted, quietly and under their breath, that they made a colossal blunder.

I say let these folks save face and don't make them have to grovel. If a friend or relative tells you they might have erred with their vote in 2008, do NOT make a wise-ass remark or triumphantly exclaim to them that you were right and they were wrong. Otherwise, they will call you a dick and you will drive them right back into their shell and there will be no coming out of it again. They might even go ahead and vote for Obama out of spite.

Instead, let the moment pass without comment and quickly change the subject. Talk about how hot the weather has been or about how much the Red Sox suck this year. Your friend will respect that and at a later time, they will be able to open up to you more and then you guys can have an intelligent discussion about politics without anybody having to apologize.

The GOP convention is not until the end of August. That is when this campaign will really start heating up. That is when the Romney campaign needs to go nuclear.

That is outstanding. Then I am definitely voting for Virgil Goode from Virginia in my state of Pennsylvania. I was only going to vote for Romney if my vote was needed and it seems like Romney has this in the bag. That is more than good news for me as I was going to have to be drunk as a skunk to vote for Romney anyway. I am glad that he is doing well enough that I don’t have to compromise my principles. Thank you for that bit of great news!!!

You are speaking like an ideologue, not an effective campaign manager.

Campaigns aren’t won or lost by doing what your BASE, particularly your rabid base wants to see. Sure that can help you in primaries or safe districts, but when its a national election, those aren’t always the best actions to be taking.

Yes, I’d love to see a true ideological debate, but guess what? It ain’t gonna happen, and why isn’t it going to happen? Because frankly, this election it doesn’t need to happen. If the race were going to be close, yes, having hte ideological discussion would matter, reality is, this election isn’t going to be close, and end of the day its not a decision between two unknowns, its an election that is going to be, and always was going to be a referendum on Obama.

Romney doesn’t need to attack rabidly, because Obama is such an amateur.. The Obama Campaign is self destructing in slow motion right before your eyes, and you are so focused on the fact Romney isn’t being a rabid pit bull in JULY, when no one is really paying much attention except for the political junkies, that you can’t see it.

Stop being such a zealot and look, look at what’s going on. Obama’s been on the defensive for a month or more, even with a USSC victory, he got a dead cat bounce. His one accomplishment and winning it got him nothing, in fact the more he talks about it the lower he polls. Todays jobs numbers prove once again the Obama Economy is the No Job Economy. 4 more Job Reports until November, and guess what? They aren’t going to change in any significant way between now and then.

Obama is losing the fund raising battle, he’s been abandoned by his donors, He’s trying to gain momentum in ways that are foolish.... Like attacking Romney on his jobs record... Really? Obama’s administration is the only administration in the modern age where fewer people will have jobs the day his term ends than the day he took office.... But Job creation is really what you want to talk about? Obama is a neophite, he’s beyond an amateur.

He couldn’t even change the topic with an Obamacare win, because the more he talks about it the lower he goes in the polls! The legislation is dispised across the board even 20% of polled democrats believe it will drive up cost, hurt jobs and not improve health care! 20 percent of his own party aren’t buying his jive.

He’s got nothing, he can’t run on his record, because it blows... his only chance is to paint Romney as more extreme and dangerous than him... and polling out on the 5th showed that 47% of voters viewed Obama as extreme, and only 31% viewed Romney as Extreme... So, for all of Romney’s faults being painted as an extremist, really isn’t likely.

Obama is the most tin eared politician ever to hold the office of the Presidency, he really believes his “cult of personality” can overcome anything. Clinton had a cult of personality, but he had the political skills to back it up.. end of the day, like him or hate him, he had political chops.. This guy has no political ability at all, and his contrived cult of personality faded into oblivion long ago.

Obama is polling lower in EVERY group he carried in 2008.. yes, even among BLACKS... 15% unemployment will do that to you. Youth vote? 50% can’t find work... etc etc etc.. Working Class Whites in the rust belt and south, GONE.. the Blue Dog Democrats have written this schmuck off, and he can’t recover that segment from other areas.

This guy if he ran a perfect campaign would only get about 42-43% of the popular vote, reality is, he most likely won’t get 40% of the vote on election day.

Sure the press isn’t pounding Obama like they should be, but even in the press you can see the cracks in the propoganda machine are there. They know the bloods in the water, you can’t cover up 3+ years of 18% real unemployment. No one is buying it. By fall, blood will be in the water, and you will still see some attempts at propping this joker up, but the real conversation is going to be will the Republicans get 60 seats in the Senate, no one but the most avid pundit will be arguing Obama will win with any sincerity.

Romney is going to run a boring campaign, and honestly there is no reason he can’t. Obama has no chance of overcoming his negatives and problems, and yes I have no doubt it will get dirty and nasty down the road, but Obama cannot paint Romney as extreme, only the kool aid drinkers are going to believe Romney is scarier than 4 more years of Obama.

Obama got voted in out of disgust with Bush, Obama is going to be sent packing out of disgust with Obama. This election is a referendum on Obama.. Romney doesn’t need to go off all gung ho day after day in Jul when no one is even watching. Romney has proven he’ll fight and fight hard when it matters. For now, let the amateur keep hanging himself.

I firmly believe by October the serious political discussion won’t even be can Obama win, the serious political discussion will be will the Republicans get 60 Senate seats.

That will be the most important factor in the next election.

Relax, Mitt has shown he has no problem blugeoning his opponents, or did you miss his attacks in the primaries?

Its JULY folks, and Mitt isn’t throwing hard punches and Obama has still be on the defensive, even with his obamacare win for more than a month.

Obama is a rank amateur and it shows, Romney can enjoy exactly what he has been doing, Obama hasn’t had 1 day of true offense since Romney was nominated, and if he couldn’t turn OBamacare ruling into offense, he can’t turn anything into offense.

It will get more interesting by the end of summer, but for now, no one but political junkies are paying a whole lot of attention.

Hope you're right.

I did not think Mitt would be the nominee and he is so maybe he knows how to win, unlike McCain.

I am not a Romney supporter, but I believe Obama will lose the election and get no more than 45% of the vote.

However, to me it seems that if he refuses to go out for some Touchdowns after the nomination, he will not bring a strong down ticket vote along with him. In other words, if he wants a Republican Senate, he should go all out after the convention?

Yes but we need to vote to get as many conservatives in the house and senate as possible. Even in the local state houses we need to stack with conservatives. That way, whatever happens with POTUS in the future we have conservatives in place for several years to stop nonsense.

This election isn’t about ROMNEY, its about OBAMA.. this election is a referendum on OBAMA, and when you dig into the numbers he’s got zero chance of winning re-election.

Thread winner. This race is between Obama and Not Obama. Who's this Romney guy?
