Coked-Up 14-Year-Old Found Emaciated in Flaming Deerfield Beach Mobile Home

Quick parenting note: If your malnourished 14-year-old son does tons of drugs, don't let your trailer catch fire. The cops will find out about it, and get, like, so mad.

That's what happened Tuesday, when 47-year-old Darin MacDannald was arrested in Deerfield Beach on child cruelty charges. Police say his son, who weighed 85 pounds, was examined at Coral Springs Medical Center and found to have "unexplained red blotches" on his legs and "had pinpointed pupils and was ... under the influence of some type of drug or drugs. A drug screen of [his] blood and urine tested positive for barbiturates, opiates, cocaine, and marijuana."

Hospital staff also found the boy was carrying a cigarette, a makeup case full of coke, Xanax, and oxycodone. He also "had dirty clothes on and appeared to be dirty all over."

CBS Miami spoke with some of his neighbors -- they all said they noticed something was wrong, but... didn't care.

"Yeah, I know he was very thin and pale. But besides that I never spoke to him," said Elizabeth Corpeno, a neighbor with children of her own. "I don't know. I worry about mine and that's it."

In the small trailer park where they lived that seemed to be the consensus. Everyone keeps to themselves. Even Genesis Nunez and her father who lived next door to the 14-year-old.

"We noticed it. But that was between them," said Nunez. When asked why she didn't call police she said, "That's a personal problem between them."

Best trailer park in the world, that one. Full of upstanding folks who really care -- druggie 10th graders and their lovely neighbors. Somebody get Corpeno and Nunez a plaque.

The child is still in the hospital; MacDannald is in jail with a bond set at $7,500.

This is what happens when all our social bonds are broken, even the bond between parent and child. I think it illustrates the direction our society is taking, with about 50% (not all of them in trailer parks) already there.

I just hugged my son and told him I loved him. That is the only response I can fashion to this horrid tale.

When you have learned to fear retaliation is the best defense for these people in cases like this.

Call the police, get CPS involved, then come home to a burning home or a wife/kid beaten to within an inch of their lives.

Most people genuinely do care I believe, but understand that the consequences of stepping up are sometimes far more severe than the hurt you feel inside watching it happen and not getting involved. This 14 year old kid probably liked his life, enjoyed his high, and would have been vengeful toward anyone that took it away from him and put his dad in jail.

The people in the trailer park didn’t call the police because they didn’t want the police coming into their home and looking to closely at them.

Looks like old media is scraping the barrel for "journalists"

Maybe this is why tornadoes seem to like hitting trailer parks so much.

FYI to the Broward-Palm Beach New Times: A 14 year old (unless a genius) is not a 10th grader, he's an 8th grader...which of course makes it even worse.

Let me see, starve your kid, and turn them into a drug addict in Florida, and you get a tiny bond.

Defend yourself from a drug-dealing, thieving, school-expelled, thug, in the middle of the night, getting beat up and bloodied--before using a gun--and get locked up with a $1,000,000 bond....

I find it hilarious the “New Times” is spewing this smug self righteousness. Their regular advertiser base is a combination of plastic surgeons, massage parlors and strip clubs.
