Growing concern about crime in the Oakland hills, and a withered Police Department's apparent inability to do anything about it, has given rise to a new neighborhood strategy embraced by both residents and police: Buy surveillance cameras.
Lots of them.
Since November, Oakland police have attended at least a dozen neighborhood meetings in Montclair and other hillside areas where they preach the benefits of wiring residential streets with security cameras, then make way for salesmen to pitch surveillance products to residents.
For police, residents' cameras are a new way to collect evidence at a time when depleted staffing levels have led to hours-long response times to burglaries. For residents, they offer new hope of catching criminals, even if they hint at a self-inflicted Big Brother state and threaten to change the tone of life in the hills.
"There's not enough police resources to protect you anymore," said Tony Morosini, who, along with his neighbors near Sibley Park, agreed to purchase cameras and point them at the street. "People are starting to take matters into their own hands."

He successfully protected one small downtown neighborhood (where his office was), but the rest has continued downward to the current anarchy in the entire city.
Of course, the Oakland residents did get what they asked for, and it ain't goin' away.
Other steps they can take: build a wall and a moat, fill the moat with alligators, man the wall with crossbowmen, and close all the gates at sundown.
Meh, I just put a sign up on my fence that shows a handgun and says below it “Anyone found here at night will be found here in the morning.”
Great stuff. Cameras are approx $106 each. Controller software and NVR software come with. Highly recommended.
Montclair. Where Progressive Prius-driving Cal-Berkeley grads raise their “sensitive” PC, helmet-wearing gluten-free kids to become Libtard, greenie Left Wing asshats.
I know a lot of people in both Berkeley, Montclair and Piedmont, and they are all wealthy but are complete Moonbat Commies. It’s weird for them to scream about the 1% when they are in a $1MM 2,000 SF Craftsman in the hills on a 1/4 acre with no yard.
I like Crogan’s.
Possibly one thing the Oakland cops haven’t considered is they will also be on camera when in this neighborhood.
A little lesson for those living in “The Hills”, which are still part of Oakland, but are very, very, nice.
If you live in a city run by Obama’s people, don’t expect JACK from them. It’s not that they hate you - they actually do not hate you - but, rather, they have their families to enrich with tax money. You are way down their list. You’ll have some pigs (a little OWS lingo) when times are good, but forget it otherwise.
That being said might I suggest Vigilance Committees. They worked when tried the last time.
In fact they did, the SF vigilance committee hanged the murderer of a newspaper editor, and then turned their attention to the Sidney gang suggesting any found in SF on Saturday would be hanged that evening.
The Sidney gang and Australian accents in SF, disappeared overnight.
