Most of Detroit is safe.
Over the last few weeks I have ridden my bike through large parts of Detroit both day and night. I never see anyone. There is nobody there.
It is a city sized for 2+ million people with about 500K living there.. if that. I don’t even believe the 500K number. I don’t see the people. The city is miles and miles of physical and spiritual emptiness.
If you go into the neighborhoods where a lot houses still stand, gangs control things. And near the all-night clubs, those areas are quite unsafe.
The new urban open-space areas where one or two houses survive on a block seem reasonably safe.
Detroit is a favored whipping boy around here but I personally think it has a much brighter future than a lot of cities that are currently in better shape. Granted they have a long way to go but they’re taking responsibility for their own protection and that’s a great start.
Strip the federal dollars away from Chicago and we’ll be smelling the smoke all the way to east Michigan inside a week.
Weeks ago I was listening to NPR & they had LA’s Governor, Mitch Landrieu on & he was saying how New Orleans was emulating Chicago’s excellent fight against high homicide rates. I believe I shook my head through the whole interview.
NO ONE should emulate Chicago! Ha.
btw Landrieu is the Mayor of New Orleans (Jindal is the Gov).

It is fascinating. They absolutely despise both the criminals and the corrupt city leadership.
Also, I never suspected so many union cops from a Yankee metropolis would be right wing. But they are, hard core style. I guess Chicago has a way of doing that to people who don’t live in fantasy land.
