Ermes Efron Borgnino was born in Hamden, Conn., on Jan. 24, 1917, the son of Italian immigrant parents. The family lived in Milan when the boy was 2 to 7, then returned to Connecticut, where he attended school in New Haven.
Borgnine joined the Navy in 1935 and served on a destroyer during World War II. He weighed 135 pounds when he enlisted. He left the Navy 10 years later, weighing exactly 100 pounds more.
"I wouldn't trade those 10 years for anything," he said in 1956. "The Navy taught me a lot of things. It molded me as a man, and I made a lot of wonderful friends."

He was great in “Emperor of the North” as the rail yard bull. Quite a contrast to McHale.

Loved him in the Poseidon Adventure. I know it was 70’s disaster film schlock, but it’s one of my favorite movies. Loved Gene Hackman in it too.

You left out “From Here to Eternity” ...... Though he was certainly not a good guy in that.

“On Demand” cable has the more modern movie of McHale’s Navy on it’s free movies now. Borgnine plays an Admiral of some top secret navy organization. It was an okay movie.
Yes, she was great too.
Borgnine was a great antagonist in “Ice Station Zebra,” in which he played a Russian double-agent (paired with Patrick McGoohan).
He was also consistently excellent as the character of “Dominic Santini,” a supporting role in a Cold-War-era action series on TV called “Airwolf.” This series began as one of the best written and best acted action series ever. It was gradually dumbed-down, and the anti-tyranny / pro-America politics diluted, by the studio execs, who claimed they were trying “to reach a broader audience.”
Hulu.com has all four seasons of “Airwolf” for free (including the notoriously bad 4th season, in which all the original leads were killed off, and the entire production moved to a super-low-budget company in Canada. The original lead in seasons 1-3 was Jan-Michael Vincent, who was replaced in season 4 by Barry van Dyke). For those unacquainted with this show, I highly recommend it, especially if you compare the first 3 or 4 episodes of Season 1 with almost any episode of Season 4.
The show’s theme music is also very compelling.
Sadly, Jan-Michael Vincent is long retired from acting, having fallen prey to drug abuse and alcoholism. I’m wondering if he’ll make any statement regarding the passing of Borgnine.
