New York City to introduce 300 square foot micro apartments
UK Daily Mail ^ | July 10, 2012 | Snejana Farberov

New York City’s diminutive apartments have long been the butt of many a housing joke, but now developers are poised to take the concept of downsizing to a new low. City planners believe that tiny studio units measuring 300 square feet – or six times the size of a standard jail cell at Rikers Island - could be the answer to a growing population of singles and two-person households. Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday invited developers to come up with ways to fill 335 East 27 Street with what officials are calling ‘micro-units.’

Looks like Bloomberg finally has a sensible idea. If I was young and single and had an opportunity to work and live in Manhattan I would take one of these apartments in a New York minute. All one needs is a place to sleep because you are either at work or out on the town.

if it is so sensible, why is the government funding it? If there was a need, if the government got rid of regulations and allowed developers to do it, it would flourish, if it was supposed to.

This is step to loosening the horrible grip NYC has on housing. If there was a free market there would be I bet hundred of thousands of these type of units already available.

In super-expensive Hong Kong, they have "cage apartments." they will have 20 or so "cages" to a room and you sleep in a cage (used to lock up your possessions when you are not there)

This is not a bad idea. When I was young and working in New York, all I needed was a bed, bathroom and very small kitchen area. I was rarely in the apartment. Of course, they’ll find a way to charge a fortune for these too.

This is an announcement from Genetic Control:
“It is my sad duty to inform you of a four foot restriction on
humanoid height.”

[Extract from coversation of Joe Ordinary in Local Puborama]

“I hear the directors of Genetic Control have been buying all the
properties that have recently been sold, taking risks oh so bold.
It’s said now that people will be shorter in height,
they can fit twice as many in the same building site.

Our 33 foot Travel Trailer is about 300 sq.ft. My wife and I and two dogs and two cats get along just fine for 3 months of the year when we travel. Our regular home is 2100 sq.ft. and it is fine too.

If all you need is a bed, a bathroom, a kitchenette and a place to eat/work, then 300 sq. ft. is fine. For reference, I visualized it as the same size of a hotel unit I was in for a vacation, and came out about perfect, as that was 314 sq. ft. once I looked it up. While it was crowded, that contained two double beds, a small table, and a full-sized bathroom. Swap in a queen for the two double beds (get even more space by going for a pullman-style bed option or perhaps a futon/sofa bed) and shoehorn in a kitchenette, and it would be livable, though not luxurious by any means. Plenty enough for 1 or 2 people who don’t plan on entertaining or hang around the house a lot.

The problem with the free market comments above is that NYC doesn’t have a free market for housing.

This reminds me of the apartments the Soviets built for their people in Moscow and other cities. Living hell holes, no privacy, community lavatories and kitchens and falling apart construction due to shoddy workmanship and NO maintenance. WTG there Big Apple. That's Progress with a capital "P".
