President Barack Obama will hold a small grassroots event at Roanokes historic Fire Station No. 1 on Church Avenue on Friday, his re-election campaign confirmed this morning.
Tickets will be required to attend the event. The campaign will release more details about event later today.
The event is scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Fire Station No. 1, according to Roanoke government spokeswoman Melinda Mayo.
She said the Secret Service is coordinating with the Roanoke Police Department on security issues and that several streets around the station may need to be closed for Fridays event.
Mayo said the city likely will release specifics about street closures and other information on Thursday.
Obamas Roanoke stop will be part of a two-day campaign swing through the battleground state of Virginia. The campaign said Obama will focus on the economy, with a particular emphasis on the middle class. The president on Monday called for Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for households earning less than $250,000 a year. Republicans want all of the tax cuts extended.
Staff writer Mason Adams contributed to this report.

Dang!!! I got back home to NY on Saturday night,
after visiting daughter and family in Roanoke.
I was there for 2 weeks. I would SOOOOOOOOO love
to be there - but it’s probably better that I’m not.
I wouldn’t do well in jail.
I think my s-i-l belongs to the Tea Party there;
he’ll hoist a sign for me, but he’ll likely say ‘no’
to my other requests!
With y’all in spirit!
A larger counterprotest will begin in Elmwood Park at 6:30PM on Friday the 13th. Parking should be available across the street.
