For most of her life, journalist Lily Raff McCaulou was against hunting. Like her parents, and many other urbanites who grew up in the Washington, D.C., area, she saw it as a cruel sport and felt hunters were trying to satiate a lust for blood.
But when her reporting career took her from big cities to rural Bend, Oregon, she found herself in an exotic new land. Nearly everyone hunted, for sport and for food. Like any good journalist, she wanted to learn more about her community, even if it meant immersing herself in hunting. Much to her surprise, she liked it. . . . .

I moved from suburbia to the sticks 6 years ago. There are lots of hunters here and I don’t know anyone who hunts for “sport”...they all hunt, without exception, to put meat in their frrezer.
My daughter when she was very young had pajamas with Bambis. Before she went to sleep when she had those on, I told her about Bambi and how good it was. She was saying shoot Bambi at a very young age.
Later on after going to the theater with another woman and her kids, my wife came home mildly pissed. The movie was, of course, Bambi. So what did my daughter yell out when Bambi appeared?
Hunting is not enough. Being able to harvest and process the kill is essential.
Sadly, it’s a skill I have lost over the years...
There’s a cute young chef in Texas named Georgia Pelligrini who wrote a book called “Girl Hunter.” It’s a bit too chic and she is a fashion hound in her own affected way but at least she favors hunting and I’m all for that!
Yeah, the narcissism of the article is astounding.
But just think, she's writing that way to reach an audience just like her.
Everyone in my company hunts. That’s over 100 people. They take their clients out hunting like someone would take a client out to play golf.
When my ex (from Philadelphia) and I (from Texas) used to see an animal she would say, “Oh how cute.” I would retort with, “I wonder what it taste like?”
Sadly, its a skill I have lost over the years...
Yeah, I can dimly remember slicing open a rabbit and snapping its legs as the guts cleanly flew out. Don't know if I can do that anymore.
PING!
I shot a little bird once as a kid and still regret it.
If I downed an antelope, I know I'd end up standing over the kill thinking "Now what?" and wanting no part of what comes next. Doesn't bother me that there's others who like to legally hunt, just as long as they're not shooting cats of any type.
Well-well. She gets her head outa the sand (D.C.) and goes to a “remote” area here in Bend (if she wants remote, I’ll give her remote) and viola, change. Unfortunately she is one of millions who haven’t a clue about fly-over country or “remote” Bend as the sight & smell of skyscraper and city have dulled their senses. At least her head cleared but unfortunately she’s one grain of sand on a large beach.
Thanks for the ping Roccus, hope you’re doing better than Just good.
