How Tom Cruise is to Scientology what Mitt Romney is to Mormonism
Odd Onion ^ | Michael Wolff

Posted on 07/10/2012 2:39:24 PM PDT by Enosh

*Snip*

It is another point of subtle confusion that both Churchs are – to their advantage, but perhaps even more to their peril – bound to a famous son. And they each, to a considerable degree, take on the character of their most famous adherent. Curiously, they also risk taking on aspects of the other’s big name. Weird and frightening Tom and robotic Mitt seem like generic cult characters. If cult-like religions speak to each other, it may be, in an ultimate conspiracy, that the Mormon leaders, now more than ever fearful of cult backlash, called up their Scientology counterparts and begged for an immediate Cruise capitulation to Holmes and an end to the tabloid coverage of culty rituals and dogma.

Conversely, this demonstration of Cruise’s strict adherence to Scientology’s interests might easily spread to questions about Romney’s allegiance with regard to Mormonism. (In 1960, John F Kennedy had to specifically disavow his fealty to the Pope.)

Here’s the thing: for a supposedly religious country, we really do feel extremely queasy about secret practices, mystical beliefs (whether involving aliens or not), and unfamiliar mumbo jumbo. It is true that, so far, Tom Cruise’s career has survived his eccentricities – they perhaps have given his white-bread character a certain weird élan. And it is true that we are not yet talking directly about the peculiarities and cockamamie creed of Mormonism, avoiding this subject for reasons of tact and civility.

But I suspect we are thinking about it, constantly.

The lds-org denies that Jesus is the Creator, that everything was created THROUGH Him, BY Him and FOR Him.

They deny that Jesus created even the angels out of nothing.

They do NOT teach the truth about Jesus.

Actually, we're not. Because the premise is so ridiculous, only a shill representing a political "war room" collective could come up with it.

I wouldn’t have made that connection, but I guess Michael Wolff is going to push it hard from now until election day.

Dear GOD whatever happened to the freedom to practice your religion in our country- regardless of what anyone else thinks of it?

I don’t care much for Mitt Romney- in fact I would rather we had a better candidate who actually cares about our liberty and REAL free enterprise- but we didn’t get that person for our candidate. What we’re stuck with is Mitt Romney. I’ve thought long and hard about this guy and have concluded that absolutely NO ONE could be WORSE for our country than the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

I will vote for Romney. I won’t do it with enthusiasm or conviction or even much hope. But I’ll be damned if I’ll make a “purist” or “principled” vote for a candidate I’d prefer in THIS election when the alternative is to see if our country can endure four more years of this wicked man in the White House.

I could write-in a much more conservative candidate’s name- and I’d feel self-righteous and sanctimonious for a time. But deep down, I’d know better and I’d have to live with my choice. If I did ANYTHING to aid in Obama getting his hands on the few freedoms we have left, I couldn’t look in the mirror.

Will Romney as president make us a freer nation? Will we regain any of the liberties we’ve been robbed of this last 3 plus years? I don’t know- but I SURE as hell know we’ll lose MORE if we keep Barry there..

What Romney’s religious beliefs are all about don’t concern me much- I’ve seen plenty of religious people carry on in ways that I don’t want any part of..

I don’t know much about Mormans- but thanks to Jeremiah Wright and others I’ve learned a LOT about the religion the current president appears to believe in and I’ve seen enough.

That’s not fair. I think Mitt is insipid and occasionally odd but essentially sane. Tom is bats**t crazy.

Q: How is a Red Roof Inn like a cheap pair of celestial undergarments? A: No ballroom. (Diane Sawyer is on ABC talking about how the globe is getting warmer, but I think she means the northern hemisphere. I knocked boots with her, btw.)

Good post.

This article is nothing but a facetious attempt to get us to commit political suicide.

“Dear GOD whatever happened to the freedom to practice your religion in our country- regardless of what anyone else thinks of it?”

Oh please. Who is saying that Romney or Cruise can’t practice any religion they want to?

Or is that not what you are really concerned with? Are you really concerned that their kooky religions be excluded from any criticism? If so, then sorry, that is not guaranteed by the 1st Amendment, in fact, it’s quite the opposite: our right to criticize anything, including other peoples’ religions is what is guaranteed.

I think that we all know that it CANNOT! It may not even survive these next few months, and certainly the holocaust that will ensue during a lame duck era will be one to rival the plagues of Egypt.
