Congressman Connie Mack, R-Fla., was the center of attention Sunday night at a town hall meeting sponsored by the 1830 Project Inc., a nonprofit focused on engaging 18- to 30-year-olds in the political process.

The event, held in downtown Orlando, was attended by local tea party members and featured a question-and-answer session with Mack.

The following are highlights from the hour-long session, where Mack, who is running for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat, discussed his penny plan, voting record and his friendship with former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist. He also asserted that his Democratic opponent Bill Nelson is "not really an astronaut."

Finally, it's time for this guy to fight Nelson instead of primary opponents. He is a little fiestier than I thought from the sound of it. Good. Florida needs a fighter to win this seat.

There are plenty of angles in which Mack can go after Nelson, but the astronaut issue isn’t one of them.

I’m still trying to decide who to vote for the Nelson seat. I keep voting against Nelson & I hope this time he is kicked out.

Connie Mack has
(a)Fabulous Name Recognition
(b)Low mental activity.
(c) A serious RINO infection
(d) enough ability to do a far better job than Nelson, while at the same time doing everything Jeb and Karl Rove tell him to.

Hold a cologne-soaked handkerchief to your nose and vote for the silly SOB.

ah the Two-Party System ....what a sweet racket if you're on the inside ... ya gotta love it!

Mack is the only viable opposition to Nelson.

Nelson is only hanging on because he has his own election machine OUTSIDE of the democrat party

Mack is right.

Nelson is not an astronaut. He is a Senator. He was successful at a career as an astronaut - but that was many years ago. Now he is a Senator. He is a distinct failure at that!

I can’t say Mack was ever my “fave,” but he’s all we have. Whatever it takes to get rid of the astronaut. He spent way too many days in a vacuum environment, and the vacuum has gone to his head.

“He was successful at a career as an astronaut - but that was many years ago.”

Nelson was a US Congressman selected to fly on one shuttle flight. He was not a career astronaut. Republican Senator Jake Garn was also selected to be a Congressional observer on one shuttle flight.

Bill Nelson is an attorney and professional politician. His one trip into space was a public relations stunt by NASA.

I found it offensive when Mack declared that he would not debate his primary opponents based upon his lead in the polls. I think that just subverts the process. I’m glad he is willing to take on Nelson and hope he does so vigorously.
