Other voices: Supply and demand in the Oil Patch
Pioneer Press ^ | 7-10-12 | editors-Grand Forks Herald

The guy has zero college and walks out of high school and is making 90-grand," said a Williston, N.D., teacher with a master's degree, speaking to The Associated Press about a former student who's working in the Oil Patch.

"To me, that seems to be an injustice."

Say what? Neither justice nor a degree entitles a person to a higher income. That's one of the fundamental truths of the labor market, and people in Williston and elsewhere should understand why.

The more I read teacher's quotes in newspapers, the more I wish they'd all lose their jobs.

Maybe the teacher should get a job in the Oil Patch.

Ever wonder why teachers resist automation and computerization so much? 90% of them could replaced by computers that would do a much better job of teaching the kids. You’d only need to retain 10% of them for interactions that don’t require computers.

But it’s hot and hard work.

Plus they don’t have a teacher’s lounge.

Good for him...

Anyone that can cope with frostbite in winter and mosquitoes big as birds in the summer deserves 90 grand.

You’ll get to buy new computers for each kid, but no teachers will be laid off.

And test scores will drop, but your property taxes will still go up to pay for the latest school levy and pension increase.

Real justice would be if this teacher had to work in the oil field for a while and then see if he complains about the money they make. My bet is he'd gladly take a cut in pay to get back to his sweet hours and air conditioning.

The free market is obviously functioning correctly, since a Master’s Degree in education is academically equal to a 1950s 8th grade education.

If that teacher wants the bucks, let him get out in that oil field.

As far as I am concerned, the entire field of “education” should be flushed down the toilet to join Obama and his minions.

Hot ... except in the winter ... when it’s so cold the dogs freeze to the fire hydrants.

Hey teach! How many teachers get killed in work related accidents each year?

“Plus the chance to ‘date’ students.”

The students in today's Pooblic Skool Collective are the first or second largest reservoir of STD, probably just behinds South Beach, Key West, and San Fran Sicko.

I have fourteen years of college. My nephew has none and is 22. He makes twice the income I do as a welder on the oil rig sites.

The roughnecks don’t get a three month vacation during the summer, snow days, paid pensions and free health insurance.....no wonder our kids are losing ground to the rest of the world....

Well let that little spindle-shanked winesop strap on a set of steel toes, a tin hat and go get himself some of that 90 grand. If he can follow directions he might even keep all of his fingers while he’s breaking out (learning the trade).

My nephew has all he wants. His Father and I have laid a plan out for him so he could really start taking it easy and live comfortably for the rest of his life by the time he’s thirty. Welding takes some muscle but he’s using his brain for the future.

That's envy and ignorance talk, right there.

Spend a few months as a roustabout, chump, and we'll see what you have to say then, if you survive.
