The Boston Globe Gets its ‘Romney Stayed At Bain’ Story Wrong (FactCheck: Obama's claims "all wet")

Today the Boston Globe reports that it has discovered that Mitt Romney stayed at Bain Capital three years longer than he has stated. The Globe bases its report on government documents that bear Romney’s name, but the Globe is apparently confused about what the documents mean.

It’s common knowledge that Mitt Romney joined the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee in 1999. The story of Romney’s ultimately successful efforts to turn that Olympics around, avoiding disaster and finishing strong with a gangbusters winter games in 2000, forms the backbone of Romney’s fix-it man resume. Very few could have stepped in as Romney did and turned an almost certain disaster into a profitable national success.

The Olympics turnaround effort was all-consuming.  According to a Fortune Magazine story from June 2007 supplied by the Romney campaign, Romney entered the picture faced with a massive task:

“As early as 1999, a financial crisis was looming: The Games were mired in a bribery scandal and were running a $379 million deficit. Romney was asked to step in, and he immediately slashed budgets and boosted sponsorships. And since the Games were held just months after Sept. 11, 2001, he oversaw a huge security apparatus. He now says it was one of the most difficult things he’d ever done, comparing it to ‘arranging 17 Super Bowls a day for 17 days.’ The Games ended up with a $100 million profit.”

That Olympics effort required Romney’s full attention, to the point that he even canceled personal travel with his wife who was ill at the time, so he transferred day-to-day control of Bain to 26 managing directors. They operated the company from February 1999 forward. From that point, as the Washington Post determined in its examination of Bain after the Obama campaign attempted to accuse Romney of using Bain to outsource jobs, Romney was a “passive, limited partner [with] no management capacity” in Bain. FactCheck.org agrees with the Post’s assessment, even dubbing the Obama claim “all wet.”

The Obama spokesbag actually called Romney a “felon” today. But we are not allowed to discuss Rezko, Wright, Ayers, transcripts, etc.

When FactCheck disagrees with a Dem, you know it’s a crock.

Unfortunately, the average American thinks FactCheck is completely unbiased and objective in all matters.

That would be 2002, for those of you playing along at home.

Pretty much everything we will hear from the left and Obama’s campaign will be lies and hyperbole, not that we can look back to find it has ever been different. Obama has one course he can take, and that is attack and smear. He can’t run on his record, and he can’t tell the truth.

Methinks Rush is right: The Dear Leader Admin, and RAT Party, along with their “Hallelujah Choir," in-the-tank-for, corrupt, biased, Lame Stream Media is in Panic/meltdown mode and grasping at straws to try and salvage his sinking ship.

That was my reaction to the story as well.

All these facts were already known. The MSM was just trying to carry the Kenyan’s water for him, and they failed yet again.

I detest them all.

He said that? Really? Just a quick question. Isn’t using a fake social security number a felony? Let’s be careful about throwing around the ‘felon’ card.

You are being far too kind. First you should take it that what is reported IS in fact A LIE. After that you may look for grains of truth.

When this was first posted on this site I wrote that it had been twisted or , being charitable, misunderstood. It was in fact intentionally misunderstood and twisted.

The Globe will never print a retraction as it might be further support for charges of libel.

As I said before, this claim is a steaming COS and nothing more. Worse is coming. Count on it.

That was the "spokesbag" not the "'bam".

I doubt 'bama knew about it at the time ~ some of the "incrowd" are so insular they don't imagine other people have sources of information!

Yes, all these facts were previously known. The Boston Globe article is a near reprint of the Mother Jones article penned by the famous David Corn.

The data which absolves Romney is that after he left to manage the 2002 Olympics, in filings with the SEC, Romney's name is not printed as a partner or director of ANY of the various Bain investment funds, which he has long said was the case.

Yesterday, a member of FR, who is also running for President, re-posted the Mother Jones article to make himself look good and Romney look bad. The only objective the candidate accomplished was to prove he lacks critical skills in judgment and is willing to twist the facts for his own advancement.

Sorry...I’m still a bit confused w/this. Romney said he left Bain in 1999. But he’s signed company documents saying he was the CEO until 2002. Also...when he was running for Mass gov he got into a bit of a hassle because he had claimed Utah as his residence not Mass. Mass law requires a 7 year residency to run for Gov. So at that time Romney claimed he worked part time for Bain as CEO and that his accounting firm had made an error in filing his home as being in Utah.

Personally...I don’t give two hoots where/what Romney was doing between 1999-2002. But I have to admit that all of Romney’s flip flops on many, many topics....when added to this narrative...doesn’t look good.

My guy Newt tried to tell everyone back in the primaries that ol Romney was the WORST candidate. Newt called it.

“But he’s signed company documents saying he was the CEO until 2002”

He didn’t. Just more lies from the Kenyan.

According to sec filings....Mitt did file as head of Bain.

http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1054290/000092701601001009/0000927016-01-001009-0001.txt

As I said...don’t really care where he was...I care that he appears to be a serial liar. Among his many other faults.

I stand by Newt....Mitt was the worst possible candidate.

Apparently you did care as you said you were “confused”
I probably added to your confusion by my reply “He didn’t” What I should have said was, he didn’t lie.

The bottom line is the Kenyan continues to spew lies about this and FactCheck keeps smacking him down. If you’re still confused check the FactCheck link I provided you earlier.
