Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

Two Lessons Learned

July 14, 2012

A few weeks after writing an Our Daily Bread article about the importance of obeying the law, I set out on an 850-mile trip—determined to stay within the posted speed limit. While driving out of a small town in New Mexico, I became more occupied with unwrapping a sandwich than with watching the road signs, and I got a speeding ticket. My first lesson that day was that not paying attention costs the same as deliberate disregard for the law. And I still had 700 miles to go!

My second lesson was that our resolve will always be tested. I thought of Moses’ words to God’s people as they prepared to enter the Promised Land: “You shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not” (Deut. 8:2).

Pastor and author Eugene Peterson called the process of following Christ “a long obedience in the same direction.” Every resolution to begin to obey must be followed by many decisions to continue.

God gave me a humbling reminder of how vital it is to keep my heart set on obeying Him—and to pay attention along the way.

Thou who hast freely given
Thine all in all for me,
Claim this life for Thine own to be used,
My Savior, every moment for Thee. —Christiansen
To love God is to obey God.

Read: Deuteronomy 8:1-10

The Lord your God led you all the way these forty years . . . to humble you and test you. —Deuteronomy 8:2
Bible in a Year:
Proverbs 8-11

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Friday, July 13, 8 PM Pacific (11 PM Eastern)

Broadcast live at 98.1/KING-FM/Seattle

Click on this link to listen.

Mozart: Sonata for 2 Pianos in D, K. 448
Inon Barnatan, piano
Adam Neiman, piano

Mozart had a lot of piano students from the nobility, and one teenage girl was ugly but quite talented. She had a fine legato style of playing but lacked the agility to handle fast runs. (Sounds like me as a teenage pianist.) Mozart wrote this sonata for her, giving himself the difficult passages and handing her the passages that would show off her best attributes.

Adam Neiman is a friend of mine. When he first appeared with the festival, he was too young to drive, and his mother, a German pianist of some skill, had to drive him to and from rehearsals and concerts. Today he’s 34 and has a beautiful Asian wife, his second. (Adam gets around, for a bald headed guy.) Adam is a rare conservative among classical performing artists, a follower of Ayn Rand like myself. Atlas Shrugged changed both our lives, and we’ve spent quite a bit of time talking about “Atlas”, Rand, and the inevitable return to some kind of gold standard. That’s when we’re not talking about the fingering of a certain passage in a piece. Adam is also a composer, and I’ve tried learning an early impromptu of his, but it’s quite difficult.

Debussy: “In Black and White” for 2 Pianos
Orion Weiss, piano
Jeremy Denk, piano

A new piece for me.

Shostakovich: Two Pieces for String Octet, Op. 11

Mendelssohn: String Octet in E-flat, Op. 20
Augustin Hadelich, violin
Ida Levin, violin
Stephen Rose, violin
Benjamin Bellman, violin
Cynthia Phelps, viola
Richard O’Neill, viola
Ronald Thomas, cello
Bion Tsang, cello

The Shostakovich piece is an early student work from his conservatory days and is nothing like his late style.

The Mendelssohn Octet is the single most popular piece in the entire chamber repertory, and after hearing it you will understand why. As I said to the former artistic director at her home, “It puts asses in seats.” Anyone who comes to it with an open heart will be captivated, will walk away humming a number of tunes from the piece, and will go out and buy a copy. It’s amazing that a sixteen year old kid wrote it. This is the piece that caused people to change their opinion of Mendelssohn from Child Prodigy to Great Composer.

The exposition repeat in the first movement is always observed because the first ending contains the highest note in the entire chamber repertory: a high E-flat from the first violin. (The first violin part is of concerto quality.)

The second movement is in a sullen C minor but never has a dull moment.

The scherzo is in G minor, and it is the first of the “fairy scherzos”. Much of it is pizzicato, and all of it is pianissimo. Schubert was quick to copy the idea in his last string quartet.

The finale is a contrapuntal workout of the line “And he shall reign forever” from the “Hallelujah Chorus.” It’s absolutely dizzying, and audiences go wild at the end. Watch how that two-note figure is tossed about among the instruments near the beginning.

Violist Cynthia Phelps and cellist Ronald Thomas are a married couple who first met at the festival thirty years ago. Cynthia is first chair viola with the New York Philharmonic, and she plays this huge seventeen inch viola. (I once told her I wouldn’t want to meet that viola in a dark alley because it might string me to death.) Ron and I have wonderful conversations about music.

If you want, I can recommend several recordings of this piece that will knock your socks off. Stay up late for this one.

It’s been hot and humid, so I don’t go outside much. My Tea Party group has been running forums for local candidates, and we have another one scheduled for Monday. I’m the MC and timekeeper. This Monday we’re going to have a couple of the ladies handle the timekeeping duties, so I can actually listen to what the candidates are saying.

An interesting week for sure and the cute young wahines are all better just in time for the weekend. Surprise!

Just left my son after some shopping ( something I've tried to teach him for years now is how to find bargains where ever and his skill set isn't really going up yet. But the cash in his pocket isn't either .....so figure he'll get it eventually.
