In January 2011, Joe Paterno learned prosecutors were investigating his longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky for sexually assaulting young boys. Soon, Mr. Paterno had testified before a grand jury, and the rough outlines of what would become a giant scandal had been published in a local newspaper.
That same month, Mr. Paterno, the football coach at Penn State, began negotiating with his superiors to amend his contract, with the timing something of a surprise because the contract was not set to expire until the end of 2012, according to university documents and people with knowledge of the discussions. By August, Mr. Paterno and the university’s president, both of whom were by then embroiled in the Sandusky investigation, had reached an agreement.

Within the next couple of seasons one of two things will happen...
The program will be shut down, or Penn State will get possibly a greater punishment, a program that is regularly and soundly beaten into obscurity as athletes and their parents choose to stay away.
This is what should happen when you hire a man who studied ‘wife-swapping’ among other subjects to be your President.

The Times, like the rest of the corrupt media, is eager to smear Joe Paterno at every opportunity. Yet there were others, usually relegated to the back pages, who were far more guilty, especially the college president and the head of the athletic department. But they don’t offer the same opportunity to smear a former hero.
One of the chief reasons the new President was hired was that he promised to increase LGBT programs and the preaching of gay rights at Penn State. What a coincidence.
There was already corruption there, and Paterno was not the primary cause of it. He did report Sandusky to his bosses, who were primarily responsible for the coverup. Maybe he should then have done more. But there is no excuse for this constant pretence among the Catholic-hating, gay-loving leftist presstitutes that Paterno was the head villain.
Joe Paterno, and his worthless family, are all pond scum. I’d put him right up there alongside Obama. They are both POS, the only difference is the color! Knowing that he was dying, Ole Joe “did the right thing!” He tried to wring every last cent he could out of the university and the taxpayers. Just hope he’s on fire somewhere right now!

It’s interesting that even here on FR there are “sports enthusiasts” like Cicero who will go to great lengths to protect the guilty when the guilty are “sports figures.” I had an employee, a professional engineer, who actually opined that OJ just could not have killed his wife and the other guy because “he was a sports figure.” They are as nutty when it comes to sports as are some people about religions. I mean just look at Scientology and Islam for openers.

I am not a JoePa hater.
We have his books in our house.
My hubby attended his coaching clinics.
But the Freeh report confirms what most people understand in Happy Valley - that the administrators served at JoePa’s pleasure - not the other way around.
I have held out hope this past year that there would be some explanation...naivete, senility, incomplete information.
The Freeh Report has put an end to all of that.
I want them to at least be kicked out of the Big Ten. However, that will never happen, they are one of the richer schools in that league.
I doubt it would have been any different at any other major FB power school in the USA or any other organization
Covering up to avoid scandal is NOT unique any place in society from Washington to the schools to the churches to the board rooms

I concur.
Paterno and company behaved shamefully and likely criminally. There is little doubt of that. What I don’t understand is the calls to end football at Penn State and the sentiment that Penn State be “nuked”, “burned to the ground” and all of that. Using that logic every Pope, Priest, Nun, and Catholic Church should suffer the same fate. THOUSANDS of children have been raped and victimized by leaders of the Catholic Church. It has been proven, over and over again, that the Church hierarchy, at the very highest levels, knew about the rape and abuse and DID NOTHING to stop it. In fact, worse than Penn State, the Catholic Church, for DECADES, did everything they could to cover this up. Try to comprehend the Church coddled and enabled HUNDREDS of “Sandusky’s” moving the pedophile Priests to fresh hunting grounds whenever their abuse became an issue in a particular Parrish. What is the greater scandal?
Part of the difference is that Penn State is run by the STATE of Pennsylvania. In other words, payment to this organization is not voluntary for the people of PA, or, to the extent that Penn State gets federal funds, for any Americans.
Anyone can stop, or never start, funding the Catholic Church. In a just world, people would also not be forced to fund Penn State. In other words, the University should have it’s government funding eliminated over these events. That would likely lead to Penn’s shutdown, or at least to a major shrinkage.
In this world, on the other hand, the fact that Penn State and it’s football program are government programs means that they are eternal. People, mainly in PA, but also from elsewhere, will have to pay their own money every year to keep a pedophilia-sponsoring organization running. That’s one of the many offensive things about this whole story. Calls to shut down Penn State are, in my opinion, at least partly a reasonable, if ultimately futile, protest against being forced to fund this organization.
People are still angry about Bobby Knight having been fired.
