GOP candidates have an uphill climb to topple Nixon

Dave Spence was hard to miss in the Missouri capital's "Salute to America" parade.

Wearing shorts in the 98-degree heat, the Republican businessman from St. Louis County zigzagged down High Street, energetically shaking hands, then jogging to catch up with the RV plastered with his billboard-sized photo.

Not so noticeable was his rival in the Aug. 7 gubernatorial primary, Bill Randles of Kansas City.

In jeans and a white polo shirt, Randles waved politely while walking down the center of the street alone. His wife Bev handed out candy along the curb while a volunteer followed in the couple's SUV.

The images are emblematic of the battle the two men are waging to become the Republican Party's standard-bearer against Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon in the Nov. 6 general election.

This is a pretty good introductory article about the four Republican candidates who are vying to replace Democrat Jay Nixon as Missouri's Governor.

Big money and big party affiliation Dave Spence v. Grassroots Conservative and Harvard-trained (believe it or not), small-government lawyer and all-around-nice-guy Bill Randles. (The other two are not really competitive.)

I just read the Bio’s too. Both Spence and Randle seem like good guys. The left will destroy Randle more becasuse of his involvement in the Tobacco litigation. They will say he is just another wealth attorney who fought for the big company. I can see the advertisement now. Do either of them have a chance against Nixon? I think if Romney takes Missouri then the GOP has a chance of winning the Govenorship back.

Obviously as a Randles supporter, I'm biased, but I sincerely believe Bill has a better chance of defeating Nixon than does Spence.

Bill has worked in the policy arena and litigated many cases, so he knows how to rebut the "evil tobacco" legalese. He has thought through many of the issues and written/posted white papers on his website. He has stood before union people and told them he supports right-to-work. His primary focus is the size and scope of government, including reducing government regulation. He's consistent AND he has the backbone to stand firm, even when the people he's facing oppose his positions.

When asked at an early campaign debate, Dave Spence did not even know how the electoral college works, asked Bill to respond and said he'd have to look it up. Since then, he has refused to participate in forums with Bill. I doubt Dave's ability to deal with people and groups (Dems and Dem special interests) who want and will work for his positions to fail. He may be a good businessman - he helped turn around a failing business and save jobs, and from all indications, is a good businessman - but I don't believe he is prepared for the political arena.

I did not decide on a candidate for a long time, but the more I learned about, and heard from, Bill Randles, the better I liked him - until I finally became an active supporter. Check out his website, www.billrandles.com - and I think you'll agree.

Bill has been doing that, and very nicely.

First he says that this election is "not about jobs" - it's about freedom, and the many ways federal and state government are taking our freedoms away by the day.

Then he asks Missourians to think of ONE - "only one thing Obama has done that Jay Nixon has even said anything against, much less done anything about" and answers his own question by saying, truthfully, that we "can't, because Jay Nixon IS Missouri's rubber stamp of of Barack Obama."

He closes his speeches by saying that Obama, Nixon, and McCaskill all need to lose their jobs so the lives of Missourians and Missouri's economy, future and freedom can move forward.
