McClatchy poll shows majority favor extending all Bush tax rates

A new poll from Marist and McClatchy make the position of Reid and Obama even tougher. Contrary to Obama’s claim, a majority of registered voters want all of the current tax rates extended, even those of the highest earners:

A majority of Americans want the Bush tax cuts extended for everyone, despite a strong push by President Barack Obama to eliminate them on higher incomes, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll.

The poll found 52 percent of registered voters saying they want all the tax cuts extended, including the tax cuts for incomes above $250,000, while 43 percent want the cuts extended just for incomes below that threshhold [sic].

The news gets worse for Obama in the demographics, even if McClatchy has a problem with reporting on the issue:

Young voters ages 18-29 favored tax cuts for everyone by a margin of 69-29, the largest margin of any age group.

Latinos favored tax cuts for all incomes by 62 percent to 36 percent. Whites supported tax cuts for every income by 50 percent to 44 percent. African-Americans split, 48 percent for limiting the tax cuts to incomes below $250,000 and 47 percent for extending them to all incomes.

And those making less than $50,000 supported tax cuts for all incomes by 53 percent to 41 percent.

and the best thing is, the sample is D36/R29/I34....so its even worse for Obama.

All taxes need to be shrunken to the lowest rates possible, and then, they must be kept at the lowest rates possible, for always, if not completely eliminated. Dittos, to the size of government, at each and every level, for always, and, fully, encourage the rest of the world governments to do the same things with their governments. Leftist domination of all of the world’s governments must, seriously and successfully, come to an actual end, as soon as possible. This must, always, be the ultimate goal, as long as it, seriously and successfully, does happen and as soon as possible.

I’m for the House GOP proposal that we extend all the Bush tax cuts for one year and allow the new congress and president (hopefully Romney) to explore a wide range of tax reform ideas in order to pass better tax laws.

My vote is to LET THEM EXPIRE!!!

As I’ve been saying for months if people DEMAND a $4T government, then people should pay their damn taxes for a $4T government. For Heaven’s sake, stop making my children and then their children pay for it.

If old people, including old FReepers, are willing to give up their Social Security and Medicare, then I’ll start thinking that this country just might get serious about cutting spending. But I haven’t seen jack of that, not even on this site.

So let’s START PAYING OUR BILLS, for once.

Registered voters = junk poll. Only likely voters have any pull with politicians.

Obama loses the demographics in the poll by wide margins with a +7 Dem spread. Way to go Obama.

You don’t raise taxes in the middle of a generational Depression. Period.

Thanks for the details.

Good to see the young voters interested in their Liberties, and the Liberties of others.

I didn’t vote for that crap, so there’s no need to force me into the realization of govt and entitlement greed.

Too many of us are against burning down the house. It’s not necessary. It’s a matter of evicting the entitlement attitudes.

Unfortunately we’re outvoted. So it comes down to whether we pay our bills today or we leave them for our children. Unfortunately too, the second option seems to be prevalent.

Classy of you to agree with me...that’s awfully rare on this site. Thanks.

Latinos favor it in a GREATER percentage than whites? Wow.

My theory, though it probably cannot POLITICALLY be done now, is this: rates for the BOTTOM rung of the income earners should be raised. I don’t want to “punish” the poor—but so many have no “skin in the game” when it comes to how the federal government spends money.

If even the lowest wage earner paid just 8-10% of income to D.C., they would be more likely to pay attention to their voting habits.

Another thing I’d like to see, and this is something Rush used to mention years ago: the elimination of employer withholding. Make people “write a check” every pay period from their gross pay. Such a move will cause more people consider the cost and size of the federal bureaucracy.

I’m in favor of extending them and deepening them.

I am so happy the subject line reads tax RATE and not tax CUT. We definitely need to get back control of the language in order to provide accurate information to fellow voters and future generations.

By allowing the 2003 tax cuts to retire, President Obama will be increasing the bottom rate from 10% to 15% ... more math here:

Raising the 10% bracket to 15% represents what percentage of increase? Hint: The correct answer is NOT 5%.

Raising the 35% bracket to 39% represents what percentage of increase? Hint: The correct answer is NOT 4%. Extra credit question: People in which tax bracket will see the largest percentage of increase in their taxes?

Extra extra credit question: People in which tax bracket will see the smallest percentage of increase in their taxes?

To those moving from the 35% to the 39% tax bracket...that’s roughly an 11% increase in taxes.

To those moving from the 10% bracket to 15%, their taxes will be increased by a whopping 50%.

So the low-income people get their taxes raised even more when seen as a percentage. And the rich folks lose a higher magnitude of money, but the percentage compared to what they already make is lower.

I’ve aid my own bills and many other people’s bills as wee for the last 30 years. I’ve already resigned myself to the fact I will never see a dime of social security. All I want is to pay my own bills and have everyone else pay their own. I get very tired of being sugar mama for the entire country...
