Who cares what this constant student/community organizer/professional politician thinks. Or says. Everything he says has a political purpose. This was meant for public consumption. The problem for Obama is that he's never really done an honest days work in his life. The only times he's ever broken sweat were on election eves. The only reason he's saying these things is because his opponent is a serious man who made a fortune in business while he himself has always been a hired hand, always at the public teat. His opponent managed an Olympics while he couldn't get it for his own city (the violent crime and urban blight apparently weren't selling points); his opponent governed a state (Massachusetts, ugh, but your go where the jobs are ...) while he stayed in successive offices achieved by questionable means, and for about 15 minutes each time; and so forth and so on; so he's suggesting by enthymeme that all of these things, ordinarily considered to be hallmarks of success in America--particularly in this venue--were actually not earned but given to his opponent by others. And yes, all of this will be on the final exam in November.
I used the first version of the internet. We used to send crude “emails” but they went to a printer. Later on they went to a screen. You had to have the printer ID or screen ID to send and everyone could read the messages.

We had an intranet kind of thing at my university in 1977, and by 1980 emails were going out of the science research facility where I worked. By 1985 my husband was trying to make me connect my circa 1982 home computer to his work computer so he could nag me during the day (NO).
I lost everything in the Obama Meltdown and have worked 10-16 hours a day since then and thanks be to God have rebuilt it better than it was.

There were all kinds of other computer-to-terminal and then peer-to-peer protocols used in industry through the ‘60s and ‘70s, when BBN did its first work on Arpanet. Those, particularly packet-switching, protocols in various forms evolved for more disparate, multi-computer networks. There was a lot of interchange back and forth between those worlds as competing and subsequent protocols—most especially TCP/IP were developed and adopted as open standards.
It’s not like academia and business were sitting there like baby birds, mouths agape, waiting for the federal government to put Internet goodies into their mouths. All kinds of alternatives were about and could have been adopted in various ways. “The Internet” as we know it really came about IMO not even with the ‘worldwide web’, but with the Mosaic browser, which was dreamed up by academic technology students who, yes, worked in a lab with federal funding. They later commercialized it via Netscape.
