That wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

I see it more like the way in which Stalin purged the CPSU. First, he turned against the Left (Trotsky) then the Right (Bukharin, et al) and ultimately consolidated his power completely.

You know, I was pondering that if Romney REALLY DID nominate Rice as his VP, it could be that his strategy would be to try to win without the GOP base.

Difficult? Extremely.

Impossible? Nothing is impossible.

If he pulled that off, he would demonstrate that the GOP no longer needs to its traditional base to achieve victory. A new electoral paradigm.

That's been his strategy from the start, and why his GOP-E hatchet men had to knock off any potential Conservative threat (like Palin) to clear the field and get him through the primaries so that he could then lurch a hard left, dump the base, and rely on a coalition of squishy moderates, independents, and disaffected Rats to get him over the November finish line, barely ahead of Obama.
