All Grades (2, 3 & 4) - 1st Prize £700, 2nd Prize £200, 3rd Prize £180 and 4th Prize £170

Annan Riding of the Marches Pipeband Contest already attracts in excess of 25 bands annually from across the Country and the contest is expected to get bigger and better in the coming years.

Following the afternoon contest the day culminates in the impressive sight and sound of mass pipes and drums marching on Annan High Street.

Annan Riding of the Marches is recognised as being one of the best displays of pipes and drums in Scotland with the closing ceremony attracting in excess of 5,000 people. Displays of pipes and drums in Scotland

Annan Riding of the Marches Pipeband Championship is a unique experience, something that many pipers and drummers have enjoyed playing for many years (see comments and report below).

The competition will take place on the 1st Saturday in July at Annan Academy Playing Fields, from 2pm.

All of my parents, grandparents and great grandparents were of Scottish origin except one GGrandmother who was a Collins which I guess was Irish.

I have always really like the bagpipes, particularly “Scotland The Brave” and ‘Amazing Grace”. Never really studied up on Scotland but will always be proud of my ancestry.

As well you should be, yarddog! Collins is indeed Irish. Proud of my ancestry as well - mostly Irish, some Scots. My 4-greats maternal Grandfather was born in Scotland c. 1760 - emigrated to America before the Revolution. He was a Revolutionary soldier and settled in Stephens City, VA.

I knew sionnsar only slightly - spoke to him several times on Religion threads. A true gentleman and it was always a delight to converse with him.

The earliest of my family in America is Daniel McDuffie, born 1609 in North Carolina.

I wonder if that date is correct as that is only two years after Jamestown was settled. I guess it technically could be tho. I don’t know of any who served in the revolution but have not ruled any out either.

Every single one who could have, did serve in the War Between the States. Several in the 18th Alabama and a couple in the Fifth and Third Florida. I think one of those was later absorbed into the First Florida due to so many losses.

Most of my ancestors were Famine Refugees from Ireland. A 3-greats grandfather, born in Ireland c. 1832, served with Battery "C" 5th US Artillery in the Civil War. He was wounded with shrapnel at the Clump of Trees, Gettysburg, 3JUL1863. A 2-greats grandfather served with the 1st Va. Light Artillery, was captured, imprisoned at Fort Delaware, paroled, and settled in Philadelphia after the war.

My paternal line originates from Middlebie Parish in Dumfriesshire, in the Scottish Borders. I got interested in my Scot heritage when I worked in England for about a year back in the late eighties, and grew to love all things Scottish, especially pipe bands.

Eventually, my eldest son and I got our clan badge tattooed on our right shoulders. I’m hoping to attend some of the Highland Games here in Texas this coming spring.
