When I was a young dork growing up in West Texas in the 70s and 80s, my folks raised me to believe that making good money via righteous and industrious means was actually a good thingyknow, something to aspire to. Remember that notion?
My folks would point out people in the neighborhood and community who busted their butts and got rewarded for the goods and/or services they provided and would say, See Johnny, Dougie? Johnny studied. Johnny worked hard and smart, and now Johnnys rich, and youre still a weed-smoking dipthong working at a frickin gas station high as a kite on Colombian gold.
Yep, Johnny had a good life. And me, eh not so much. The reason why? Well, it wasnt because wealthy fat cats suppressed me. It wasnt because I wasnt afforded knowledge (because I was); I just chose to esteem it lightly. In addition, it wasnt because I didnt have enough after school government pimped-out programs at my disposal to help my wayward self.
No, my lack was based not on a deficiency of opportunity but primarily because I watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High, thought Spicoli was cool, and ran with that. Yes, I blame Sean Penn. Damn you, Sean Penn.
As Providence would have it, at the ripe old age of 21, I extracted my head from my backside via Christs effectual grace, and all the advice my folks gave me regarding knowledge and hard work came rushing back to my bong resin clogged cranium. Call me a late bloomer.
Since I had an affectation for organic stuff, I got into landscapingplanting grass, trees, shrubs, and installing sprinkler systems and custom curbing. I bought a used CJ-7, a crappy trailer, a sod roller, some machetes, rakes, hoes and shovels, and within one year I was doing a solid six figures in sales. No government handouts. No pity money from Christians. No, woe is me, I used to be a drug addict. No, Im lost and need to get on the government tit. Nope, I accomplished the aforementioned at a young age via hard work. Just hard work. Nothing but good ol hard work.
Yes, children, when I was a wee lad, my parents taught me that taking money from the government when one didnt truly need it was scummy. Matter of fact, we viewed those who did milk the system as shameful thievesa veritable affront to what it means to be a man.
I agree. . . . .
Thereare poor people and distressed people who are on the Government tit. There are people who have ridden the Government train for generations.
The worst low-life people on the Government tit are politicians who have been there for 25 or 30 years.
They suck up every perk available to them. Trips Lobbyist parties ,free vacations, good salaries with other monetary benefits we cannot even dream about. They live so far above the really needy that it is almost unimaginable, all paid for by Government largesse.
They sell out Americans every day and laugh while they do it.
Politicians. the scum of the earth.
Commie rats and thier leader have plunged the economy into the toilet along with the middleclass as he so lovingly mentions his support in each and every spewing and the drones lap it up and ask may I please have another? The middleclass is being forced onto the dole for survival. These treasonist, incidious, vile, despicable, arrogant subhumans need to be hunted down after November and put on trial for crimes against the American people.
Actually, my candidate for the worst type of low-life is the senior government bureaucrat who knows damn well he's useless, that his job is a sham, that he's sucking down tax dollars by pushing meaningless pieces of paper that do nobody the slightest bit of good, that will never be read by anyone, but if fully content to hold down a major salary, take all the perks and retire at a relatively young age.
He may piously think he is "serving the country", but he's just sucking a government tit.
weed-smoking dipthong
don’t read that every day
“...you’re still...working at a frickin’ gas station”
Eau de classisme! Pyooo! Work is honorable even at gas stations.
Even doing janitorial work is more honorable then sucking on the governments tits
Look around FR and you’ll see conservatives justifying taking federal handouts all the time. Everytime there’s a drought, a fire, or a flood, you’ll see FReepers screeching “Where’s my money”.
I realize we all pay taxes but we’ll never cut taxes or spending if we don’t have what it takes to seize the high ground and say “Stop giving us money”. Only then will we have the moral high ground to demand real spending cuts and tax cuts.
The socialist mentality has brought down every nation that has ever embraced it.
America is no different, and, yes, we’re going down.
bump for later
“And it is still scummy.”
Nah. It’s brilliant; it means that a budding genius can be free to think, to better humanity by becoming so brilliant that he can think of ways to run the country that will make him the saviour of mankind and bring utopia to the face of the earth.
/S/
Newt got excoriated for saying that.
I remember the first time I saw someone using "funny colored dollars" at the grocery store. I thought it was foreign money....mom whispered "they're food stamps". There was a stigma to using them...not now. Politicians don't want you to "be embarrassed" using "assistance". There in lies one of the problems.
.....sir, I agree with you that “politicians” are, by and large, scum of the earth................but, lets give credit where credit is ALSO due! The so called “American People”, too busy watching MTV and The View and Oprah to have a clue............put these bastards in office and keep votiing for them!
So, one might say that “millions” of Americans are similarly “scum of the earth”............hunh?
Notwithstanding any of the foregoing, I would rather have the 545 scoundrels we call a Federal Govt than a country like SAY Syria who has no politicians and civil war in the streets. One is reminded of that famous saying “Democracy is the worst form of government there is, except for all the rest”.
My mother, who is 76, remembers when gov’t assistance began & she said that it was so shameful ( she lived in a small midwestern town) that everyone knew that if you were on assistance then you had NO ONE to turn to.
Now where I teach I get to hear how crummy the services are. Yes, people complain about what they get for free!!!!!! Actually, becoming a public school teacher after teaching in private schools for 17 years was what opened my eyes & made me a conservative. I get so angry at the abuse I see on a daily basis & especially so after visiting my mother who has had breast cancer & still works.
My husband’s family are all very hard working ( his mother is an Italian immigrant who came as a teenager & worked in sweatshops before she married another Italian & they have a nice life.) except for my sister-in-law who has the disability label. She is living proof that you CAN get disability for just being a total lazy ass. She is the shame of the family & several years ago my brother-in -law blew up at dinner over her entitled attitude. She actually was offended when he stated that people on gov’t handouts should NOT be able to buy lobster or steak. She was offended that he didn’t think think that welfare recipients deserved to eat well. He said, “Not on my dime.” It went from bad to worse.
There will never be reform, never. I truly, sadly believe that. Unless people see what I see on a daily basis they think the whole thing about people scamming the system is made up by conservatives. How I could have been so blind for so long.................
Good for you for working hard & posting this!
