MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man has been indicted on federal charges that he was paid thousands of dollars by aspiring teachers in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi to have other people take their teacher licensing exams.

The federal indictment released Tuesday said 58-year-old Clarence Mumford hired a group of test takers, including Memphis City Schools employees or former employees, and used false documents during licensing exams in the three states.

The Commercial Appeal reported that the test takers were only identified by their initials in the 45-count indictment against Mumford alleging conspiracy to defraud the United States, document fraud and wire fraud.

The indictment said the scheme ran from 1995 to 2010, but it was not clear how many people paid to have someone else take the exams.

Based on what I see coming from teachers, especially notes home, inability to be tested to see if they know anything and their blind support of the unions that hold them down, I would think failing a teaching exam is like failing a gravity exam.

I've recently taken the basic math, reading and writing exams as well as the biology content exam. I graduated from college in the 1970's and with a brief review I passed the first set with flying colors. The bio review took me longer, but I also sailed through it.

I think that failing the reading and writing portion would be like failing a gravity exam, as you said. Failing math is a bit more understandable if one didn't bother to review a little bit of geometry beforehand. Content exams are more difficult. I can easily see failing one of those by not reviewing the content. Anyone who can't spend the time reviewing and passing the test has no business teaching the content.

Interesting — it might be fun to try (graduated early 1980s).

Good info, thanks!

"The Commercial Appeal reported that the test takers were only identified by their initials in the 45-count indictment"

Why?

Because they're union members?

There wouldn't be any shame anyway if their whole names were known.

WE ARE DOOMED! (WAD)

BTW, what happened to all the (I think hundreds) of teachers in Atlanta who were caught cheating?
(I wonder why that slipped out of sight, ahem. Black, union and/or Democrat=It's okay)
