A US federal judge sentenced an Uzbek man to more than 15 years in prison Friday on terror and weapons charges for threatening to kill US President Barack Obama, US prosecutors said.
Ulugbek Kodirov, 22, was sentenced to 15 years and eight months in prison for providing material support to terrorism, threatening to kill the president and possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, they said in a statement.
Kodirov, who entered the United States on a valid visa but later was in the country illegally, will be deported to Uzbekistan after he completes the sentence, the statement said.

Free Speech has never been absolute. Remember, yelling, “fire,” in a crowded theater. Threatening to kill the president (any president) has always be illegal.
An utterly horrible example, and used in current timed only to say that speech is limited. (It is, of course, completely legal to yell 'fire' in a theater that is afire.)

Not so; at least, in the way you are thinking. Pr. Andrew Jackson had at least one letter threatening his life which was not considered a threat. (Even though it specifically mentioned cutting his throat while he was asleep.)
In short, I think it reprehensible that threatening the president should be considered at all more serious [or criminal] than threatening some private citizen.

Has it always been illegal? I seriously don’t know—they burned them in effigy in front of the White House many times tho. I’m not sure if those doing it got arrested or not. I guess that would be an “implied” threat in a way.
I wouldn't mind so much the current interpretation of the law if it only were applied evenly accross the board, but it seems to be suspended when it comes to Republicans.
