Daffy's closing - 1,300 jobs lost - 51 years in business

Daffy's Inc., a staple of the New York shopping scene for 51 years, is closing its doors. The Secaucus, N.J.-based discount retailer, which had been rumored to be in financial turmoil, said Monday that all its stores will be shuttering over the next few months, as part of a company liquidation.

In a statement, Daffy's said it "deeply regrets that this action was necessary due to the impact on its business of the uncertain economy and weak consumer spending and a lack of viable financial and business alternatives."

The discounter employs 1,300 people and operates a total of 19 locations, all of them in the New York metro area, with the exception of one in Philadelphia. Eight of them, including a 17,000-square-foot Times Square flagship that opened only last year, are in Manhattan.

It's a good thing Daffy's didn't build their business.

If it hadn't been given to them by other people they might really be hurting.

If Obama had a business, it would be going out business just like Daffy’s.

That was the biggest visual difference I saw between the midwest and Wash Dc / NoVa.

Here in the midwest half the commercial buildings have "available" or "for lease" signs on them.

There, I hardly saw any at all.

It’s capitalism...I like it that means Walmart (I have stock) and other great places are doing well. I never heard of this company. If it is liberal then I am even more thrilled.

Vagrants, bums, druggies, and hookers don't count?

The Obama/Reid/Pelosi America is just like the family in 2007 riding a wave of false prosperity on maxxed out credit cards and helocs. Two luxury SUVs on lease and a McMansion with negative equity.

Spending $1.40 for every $1.00 of “income”
Most of it to create dependency and buy votes.

Things are really going to pieces, more than most suspect. I have seen five businesses go under in the last few months, four of them restaurants, one a retailer. Most of them had been in business a long time. I don't think those businesses would say that the private sector is doing fine.

And this is just one observation on one small area of the country. I can't help but think its only a part of a much bigger picture nationwide that is obvious to many but the mainstream media won't touch it. If it were a 'Pub in office, they'd be all over it. But they don't dare dull the burnished glory of their Messiah.

Damn right. And what right do they have to deprive poor people of the tax money that will no longer be available to pay for their welfare and disability checks? How selfish.

What is really interesting is that mega road blocks are thrown up to block Walmart that is non union Walmart from setting up in NYC.

We now see that the protected union shops can’t make it.

So I guess the best course is for New Yorkers to eat cake since they have no bread

Daffy’s sells Name Brand/Designer clothes, mostly a season behind, that you saw on Times Square last winter, at deep discount prices.

The kind of place you go to buy the exact same thing you couldn’t afford in the designer stores last summer.

Only 100 calorie slices, and no big sodas with it either,
