Singer Kitty Wells, whose hits such as "Making Believe" and "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" made her the first female superstar of country music, died Monday. She was 92.

The singer's family said she died peacefully at home after complications from a stroke.

Her solo recording career lasted from 1952 to the late 1970s and she made concert tours from the late 1930s until 2000. That year, she announced she was quitting the road, although she performed occasionally in Nashville and elsewhere afterward.

She was a mature recording star when I was still in high school, about the same time as Kay Starr, and I think here was a Goldie Hill, the “Golden Hillbilly”, who probably preceded even Kittie by a few years.

Singers take note. If you want long careet go country and get some good writers.

70 years of concerts. Wow.

I remember a song she sang called,”I DON’T SEE WHAT I SAW WHEN I SEEN WHAT I SAW IN YOU”. Anyone ever heard of it?

I Don’t See What I Saw
by Kitty Wells

Not so long ago, you were true as the setting sun
And for you, I had love and admiration
But lately you’ve been doing things I never thought you’d do

I don’t see what I saw
When I seen what I saw in you
I don’t see what I saw
When I seen what I saw in you

‘Cause you don’t do what you did
When you done what you used to do
I had a lot of faith in you then you did
Things I never thought you’d do

I don’t see what I saw when I seen what I saw in you

Now I know that you are no longer in love with me
And it’s time that I face reality
About the fact through the years is passing in review

I don’t see what I saw
When I seen what I saw in you
I don’t see what I saw
When I seen what I saw in you

‘Cause you don’t do what you did
When you done what you used to do
I had a lot of faith in you then you did
Things I never thought you’d do

I don’t see what I saw when I seen what I saw in you

IMO it was Patsy Montana. Kitty was the second woman that made it to the very pinnacle.

Sad, RIP. Seems to be a lot of folks from my younger days and childhood passing on lately.

thank you I thought I was the only one who knew it. When my youngest daughter was a toddler she would put that record on and sing the whole song. We would just laugh our buts off.

She was a well established country legend when I was a kid! (And I’m no spring chicken!) May she rest in peace.

Thanks so much for posting the link to Kitty singing "Honky Tonk Angels". I enjoyed the video SO MUCH.

This superstar didn't have to bare 97% of her skin, mouth suggestive lyrics, gyrate in simulated sex.....she just stood up there and SANG with that pure country voice pourin' right out. An almost-bygone pleasure to hear her......and to be entertained by her.

In comparison, these old pros like Kitty (who are disappearing one-by-one) make present day skanks like Madonna and Britney look like beanbag.

Yep, she sang genuine country music. Not this crossover junk that you hear today.

Even sang bout Napoleons Retreat from Moscow.

She recorded “One by One” with Red Foley when I was in my teens & I’m 74 now. She really sang from the heart too.
