Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will use chemical weapons against opposition forces and may have already deployed them, Nawaf Fares, the first Syrian ambassador to defect, told the BBC on Monday.

Fares, the most prominent politician to defect since the uprising against Assad began, insisted that the president's days were numbered but warned he would be prepared "to eradicate the entire Syrian people" to remain in power.

When asked by the BBC's Frank Gardner whether that would mean the use of chemical weapons, Fares said: "I am convinced that if Bashar al-Assad's regime is further cornered by the people -- he would use such weapons."

“Are we being thrown another “Curveball” here?”

I was going to say the same thing. A curve ball by whom? Do we even know who the bad guys are in this one? The uprising and most of the people are Muslim Brotherhood backround or influenced and Syrian govt. are muslims. They are taking care of their probklems by ridding themselves of each other, no?

Could these be the chemical weapons (WMD’s) that couldn’t be found in Iraq when BUSH was looking. All those trucks running from Iraq toward Syria weren’t empty. I wonder.

“Curveball” was the Iraqi informant who admittedly lied about his involvement in that nation’s WMD program.

Yes, by the pro U.S. intervention/involvement in Syria advocates. We need to stay out of it, short of supplying weapons to both sides.

ahh. Well, the Wall St Journal did report last week that intelligence sources picked up Assad moving his chemical weapons around. This defector just seems to be saying that he thinks assad would use them. I think he would, too.

Israel could solve a lot of problems for us, if we’d only let them.

They'd be crazy to do so. Controlling the Palis has been enough of a headache. Why would they want to govern the Syrian population?

Didn’t his Father use chemical weapons on his own people back in the 70’s or early eighties.

“A curveball thrown by whom?”

IMHO. Assad benefits by rattling the WMD cage. It freezes the Turks, who otherwise dominate Syria militarily. Erdogen will now think twice about intervening. It buys time for Russian/Iranian intervention to work, whatever form we’re talkiing about. It demoralizes the rebels who have no defense. There isn’t really any downside for Assad. With Russian support, the UN won’t even write a stern letter. All by moving some chemical weapons around.

If push comes to shove, I think Assad will use them. Still no reason for the US to support one side of the other.
